  • 11.63 litres per cylinder wa wa woo wa. 139 litre V12 !

  • @NielsShoe Check out the V20 version rigged up to a generating set in my faves.

  • rad fan thrash 4 mins in :P

  • like sound!!!!!

  • Brilliant. I just love the sound of a GM or EMD loco. Class.

  • Class 66 fav loco of all time. They should get some more 37s though.

  • I could listen to that all day long..........

  • To me it seems strange that there is North American power in UK. When I left England in 1970 that would have been unheard of. You can say what you like about the Yank stuff but it is bullet-proof.

In Australia where I live now they are running 16/710 EMDs in the brand new SD70Ace's that BHP bought for the iron ore roads in the Pilbara hauling 35,000 ton ore trains. The locos fully imported from N.America, they really look the part.

All that tech stuff you've got on here is very interesting.

  • @gm16v149 I agree, back in my BR blue bashing days it seemed like science fiction but by the time the class 59 arrived, nothing had before offered such great reliability and it worked straight out the box but this was already tried and proven US technology that had been around years before in the SD40-2. The SD70ace is certainly a very impressive beast, an absolute powerhouse of an engine, one of my fave locomotives of all time.

  • @gm16v149

1951/52 was when EMD started running in Australia IIRC with the GM Class and Victorian Railways B class, EMD 16-567B Roots-blower, only EE engine we had back then was the ones you use in the BR 08 Class which we renamed to F Class in 1951, in 92/93 we started running 16-710G3A in the South Aust AN Class.

I think it was the 80's BHP had G.E Dash 8 before the SD70's.

  • At around 2:04 and 4:48 you can hear kind of a metallic spinning sound starting (hard to describe) that I have always heard on EMD engines. Any idea what that is? Thanks!

  • Thats the turbocharger gearing. EMD's have a clever system of gearing the turbo mechanicly to the engine as well it being exhaust gas driven. At low revs, its gear driven, hense the noise, this eliminates 'turbo lag' you get with conventional large exhaust gas driven turbo's. When the engine reaches a certain speed, exhaust gas takes over to drive the turbine wheel of the turbo as normal. This system is where that 'ying' noise comes from. Its kinda like a cross between a supercharger and turbo.

  • 3300hp is the official figure although these are nearer 3100hp cause the 8 knotch is blanked to save fuel. The V16 version your country uses alot of is 4300hp. Both are 11 litre ( 710 cubic inch) per cylinder.

  • Very cool video! How much power does that prime mover produce?

  • Are the cabs as noisy as I have heard some drivers say they are. Must be quite loud at full power. Great video thanks.

  • Hi, short answer is yes, they are! Its a low resonance drone, the sort of low freuqency that makes some feel sick and everything vibrates like hell because of it. A long heavy drag where its in full power for hours is a nitemare. A lighter train where full power isnt needed so much, not to bad.

  • Good video, there's no doubt when you hear the sounds of a working locomotive 5*

  • This is a 710G right? it sounds like it

  • It is, yes, same as the man sized V16 version you got over there in the US.

  • i noticed several variations in the sound compared to the 710Gs in the US..

  • sounds good lite that mofo upp!

  • my question is, what is the amperage and voltage to start these monsters from a dead sleep?

  • On the old stuff they had a DC traction generator that was simply 'reversed' for starting (UK anyway)on newer like these its an AC traction alternator so they need starter motors. Some have 2. Im not sure on amps but its 110 volt. As a point the AC traction alternator that this engine is driving is capable of generating over 6000amps for traction (at the red band). You can see the amps output dial in the vid marked KA.

  • Love that turbo!!

  • I believe the sound around 4:30 is the alternator, right?

  • Hi, thats the noise from the cooling fans above the cooler group. Their controlled by water temp, When the engine is worked hard, they roar!! I was standing by the radiators at that moment hence the noise.

  • Thanks for your reply! I rarely have a chance to take a ride on such a beast (as there are no "big" dieselelectric locos in the Czech Republic, if not counting old-timer class 781), but it is always cool to feel and hear the raw power of such an engine...

  • BEAST

  • I knew it had to be in the UK..the control stand is backwards from the US's.

  • Good vid... I thought the 66's were V16 though not V12??

  • Na, 710 V12. The 59's have the 675 V16. Incidently, the 710 and 675 digits represent the cubic inch's per cylinder.

  • I thought the 66's were a straight 6 two stroke.

  • Um... No. They are V12. As said in an earlier post, the Class 59 are V16.

  • @macthewesty Soz if i already answered you! The 59's use the V16 EMD 645 (645 cubic inch per pot) The 66 uses the V12 710. (710 cubic inch per pot).

  • Seeing as you now work for NR. Does that mean you might get your hands on the 37s ;)

  • What 37's are those? I didnt know we had any!!

  • Network Rail now have now one shiny 97, which is a 37 but re numbered. More to come, all being done over at Barrow Hill. I like this video though. Shows 66s arnt all about yings!

  • Ah rite, thanks for the info. I cant see myself back on the footplate though tbh, getting abit old for all that now. If u wana see some clasic EMD in a whole new light, type in 'southern pacific at burbank jct' and turn it up loud!

  • Prefer some good EE music myself ;)

  • Well yeah, was the same myself once but theres not alot of it left here anymore.

I now have to get my fixes elsewhere!

  • Thats very true. But for GM sake, I do prefer the 67s. Specially when supplying ETH. Makes them ying a lot faster on idle.

  • i have this on my MP3

  • Interesting video, I work on these as a driver day in day out, they are noisy & a garbage ride, and the build quality is woeful, a class 60 is a much better loco, and in my experience just as reliable!!!!

  • I couldnt agree more but the 710 engine is one of the best in the world, theres no getting away from that. A development from the 567 dating from the end of WW2, thousands apon thousands have been built and are still going strong today.

  • All over the world!!

  • jeez thats so loud in the engine room!!

im going to work for up!

  • nice

  • great vid mate what company?

  • Im not a driver anymore mate, jacked it in on privatisation, dont think i could stick driving these full time! Now work for NR.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • sounds nice

  • biggest piece of shit we ever got in the UK you should try driving these fuckers day in day out we should have not bothered buying this sub standard GM shite and bought some more Brush loco's or some decent european stuff from Alstom or Siemens!

  • Yeah i know they're crap and I couldnt agree more. EMD 2 stroke is one of the finest prime movers ever built though. Its everything else thats built around it that lets it down. EWS done the spec for these on the dirt cheap and now they are paying the price!

  • yes I will agree about the mechanics they have been well proven, but like you say its the rest of it.

  • GBRf 66 I guess? Nice video mate!

  • i would hate to change a power pack in that engine room thats for sure..no overhead room at all sweet vid though emd's are the best dinosaur engines around and they last forever lol

  • Yeah, we got puney little bodys to put them in compared to you guys in the US!

  • I think you could fit a whole British locomotive carbody in the engine room of a US locomotive.

  • scooter tooke emd 645 710 567 engin

  • True EMD power

  • You are seek in the train?

  • Thats Twostrokediesel sound with Turbo Charger! I'am a very great fan of this Engines! In Microsoft trainsimulator i drive only US- Diesel Lokomotoin's The best Dieselsoud in Europe, is the "Ludmilla"

  • WOW!! That was orgasmic. That sound is stunning.

  • 66147 i do belive, quality vid, thanks for posting

  • Your welcome.

  • is 900rpm the max for this engine?

  • yes most EMD is 900 max rpm engine speed very few can hit 1,000 rpm but for specal useage other wise 900 becuse of hevey cast iron piston[s]

  • Yes, for the 645 and 710 series engines the max rpm is 900. For the 567 series it is 850-890 rpm

  • jesus that is nothing compared to the Irish 071 class locos.now thats music.sounds good tho.fair play.i have heard one on top notch before.our 201s sound very much the same as thta

  • what the have a 567 in them?

  • This is the 710 engine but de-rated to just over 3000hp.

  • I would have thought the damn thing was gonna blow up

  • That was only just above half throttle!

  • Amazing good video, wow ,cool class 66 sounds.

  • Great audio!

  • Loud ying!

  • Yeah, sure did. These are realy loud at anything above idle!

  • Wow. I hope you had earplugs in while you were back there.
