quick question, what does changing the bit rate do??

It modifies the Size/Quality ratio. Generally, the higher the better (To a certain point) You cant improve the source video by using a higher bitrate.

UPDATE: If you want the video to take up less space, Use VBR and a lower bit rate, you can acheive the same quality. It does take longer to render though.

You mean HD res? Or from an HD camera? If you mean res, Higher res than 640x480 isnt very efficient on youtube. But record in HD mode on your camcorder.

you just need luck, there's no setting you can use to ge hi quality videos, unless to use &fmt=18 hack.
