I've always wondered, why do motorcyclists give an underhanded hand gesture to each other when passing (head-on)? Is it just a to say "peace" or is there some law about it? Around here I've noticed that *every* biker does it.

@TheEgonTowst - it's a salute, in the order of not only a salutation, but a indicator of a taken level of unspoken backup and camaraderie. Underhanded cause if you put your arm up your changing the weight dist., catching wind, and have your arm out of riding position.

Plus, given the rather tenuous situation cage riders put us in with their level of isolated and sheltered inattentiveness, and our very vulnerable therefore hyper-aware state is cause for such notice/camaraderie.

Although I must say I have met many riders that have never crashed and they are in their 60's and such so in reality some do not crash ever in their life. But I do agree with the gist of your statement. If I had to predict if I would crash...I would say it most likely will be to a tire blowing out or something. I have had the bike die on the freeway lol and that was a shock.

california freeways some are pretty rough, some got that real bad seam in the lane, that thing gets ugly for 2 wheels, be extra aware brother...stay in the car would ya ?

@nudracr That seam came from some younger cubicle jockey and their great idea to remove the emergency shoulder area and move the lanes 2/3rds the way over putting that seam in the lane just to gain one more parking lane in rush hour. Four wheels get stuck in a grove sometimes too on those sections where the two are at different heights. A small amount can make a big difference.

SOG, keep that distance more than 7 seconds (stop passing on the right, blinkers can break).

WOW!!! My friend was hit by a piece of rubber and it snapped his rearset right off. I can't even imagine what that would do. Luckily my friend was wearing proper protective gear, but he still ended up with a big bruise.
