  • What an absolute genius of a trainer Ryan Price was. He trained Classic winners in Bruni and Ginevra and just to prove his versatility as a trainer produced a Grand National winner, a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and a couple of Champion Hurdlers. He was much maligned over the Schweppes Gold Trophy winners Hill House, Rosyth and Le Vermontois. Ryan genuinely loved ALL the horses in his care and woe betide anyone he found ill-treating one of them. Top class trainer and a fine human being.

  • Only just over 30yrs ago and over100,000 people would be at town moor. Went last saturday and now 30,000 is supposed to be a massive crowd, how times have changed.

  • Times have changed mainly because the Leger here was won by an absolute top-notcher in Bruni. To be honest, 30 thou for what isn't much of a spectacle is pretty good. Remember, Epsom used to get half a million on Derby Day. Racing's no longer part of the social fabric. Donnie does pretty well, though, to emphasise the history and the local element. Tradition is one thing you can't invent. If they tried to change it, shorter the distance etc, it simply would fizzle out.

  • ya he definitely didn't handle epsom if you watch him he doesnt run a yard you can see him really struggling to handle the track

  • Bruni was a pretty useful horse to say the least. Clearly didn't handle Epsom & Lester looked after him when he couldn't win. I believe Capt Price blamed Piggott for a defeat in the following year's Hardwicke at Ascot? The Arc runs (75&76) were both decent & he was a fair enough 'cup' horse too, although he didn't see which way Sagaro went in his 3rd Gold Cup in 77. I believe he finished his career in the USA???

  • i worked at capt prices in the 70,s bruni was a beutiful grey horse he was the pride of the stables at that time i have searched all over for any photo or kind, i thank you very much for posting this brings back great memories

  • The manner in which Bruni won this makes his Epsom Derby run all the more puzzling doesn't it? Added to that his runs in the King George and 'Arc seem to indicate that something was amiss at Epsom

  • Hi terbine - he looks a big animal so was obviously more suited to a galloping track like Doncaster. Did he ever meet Grundy apart from the Epsom race? Bruni's performance here [& Star Appeal's Arc win a few weeks later] certainly prove Grundy's class.

  • I don't think they met apart from at Epsom colouredup, interesting in the Derby footage, you can see Lester wrestling with him as they round Tattenham (going away from the camera)......

  • I like any horse races from the 70's.This was a time before video recorders were cheap enough to buy, so most races were shown live on TV and not seen again. I am curious as to where you got the footage from. Did you own a video recorder?. Keep up the good work.

  • Got my first video recorder, second-hand, in 1981. Like you said they were too dear to buy any earlier than that. I loved the 70's too so I used to buy any racing videos I could find that showed the races from that era. Some of them are of poor quality as a result of old age and have posted the best of them rather then lose them forever.

  • not seen this for 33 years Thanks for the memory

  • It's funny. Have had this footage for years but didn't post as I never thought that it would appeal to anybody!

  • Glad you did, mate. Haven't seen this stuff since then. Keep them coming! Best wishes

  • Brilliant.

  • Chhers for posting love that old grey horse i just hope your footage lasts longer than mine did before being removed.

  • Cheers. You're quick off the mark. Only uploaded it 40 mins ago!

  • Thanks for this - I'd been particularly anxious to see it since manced42's upload didn't work ...
