  • what a musician.... But why the singer ghost got into him..? he tries to copy here Ustad Amir Khan saab's Darbari..., it's almost an apology..... What happened to him by his Gayaki ang....only alla knows? He never realized nobody will remember him as a singer.... but who will tell him that?

In this video he made Pt Kishen ji pretty plain; no rhythmic pattern, only sath sangat. ... Pt kishen Maharaj is visible in other video w other players

  • 2 kings playing a king raag like KINGS beautiful

  • Gayaki ang, simply great.

  • I met Ustad Vilayat KhaN sahib in Pinceton about 10 years ago. A real saint. I consider myself very fortunate to have touched his feet and received his blessings. He was not a showman but a true musician who had inherited a long legacy. His Gharana and contributions to music will live for ever.

So was Pt Kishan Maharajji... What a great Loss for the music lovers.

  • the one and only, our great insparetion your music is forever with us ustad ji

  • t's pretty strange to say that Vilayat Khan and such stalwarts were "best of their generation." Let's not forget that he great ones such as Khansaheb express the full rasa matrix of Darbari Kannada, particularly the veera and shanta rasas. The modern renditions by some just making complicated meends full of sentimantalism (too much karuna rasa) and sargams (not real taans)\do not make it Darbari.Because of thisVilayat Khan,Amir Khan,Bade Ghulam Ali Khan are great for any generation,

  • @speriencer just complete agreement ...

  • Comment removed

  • Darbari Kanada.

  • i could listen for hours and hours and hours and hours .... divine .. adab .. we miss you!

  • GREAT!!

  • Vilayat Khan was a celestial musican. Gods must have come down to listen to this. No need for Babu awards like like Ratna, Padma etc - He was THE GEM of our times

  • Why are people talking about Maiden and Slayer here??!! Imbeciles! I am sure that both Dickinson and Corey Taylor would disapprove of people who insult great musicians!

PS: I am a huge metal fan too. Maiden, Opeth, Meshuggah, and the likes make my day; the two greats in this video, however, transcend all of that.

  • no words are enough to speak about late Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb, simply the greatest of our times.

  • Ustad Vilayat Khansaheb and Panditji were brothers in arms - classicists, uncompromising, eschewing the flashy for the substantial - riyaz and sadhana to the very last. How we miss them!

  • godly.... there is nothing to say beyond this!

  • They were the best of the best of their generation.

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Have this recodring....amazing....just amazing......darbari relaxes me so much....

  • 2012 the song (Harry Loco) with words of MICHAEL BOWEN ! The sitar is back ! Was it ever gone ? More to come !

  • Simply unforgettable. An inimitable rendition of this magestic raag Darbari, the king of all ragas, by the legendary sitar virtuoso late Ustad Vilayat Khan Shaheb.

His singing has made it more charming and I love it very much.

Ustad Vilayat Khan Shaheb was a supreme genius and he will remain that way in my heart forever.

Many thanks for posting this unique raag for the connoisseurs.

Maitreyee Sarcar [Mrs] HF FRSA, UK

  • At Calcutta mefil they used to say 'play sitar and leave vocal to the vocalists'!!!

  • Amazing, he still has it it, even when he was old. His singing is some of the most inspired music I've heard by him. Beautiful.

  • thanks to share this beautifull devotionnal spiritual "religious" bandish with outstanding kalaam

  • sounds amaaazing!!!!

  • shubbah allaa .

  • laugh was for earlier comment. this footage is excellent.

  • i'm sorry is this religous or like classical music? it sounds very nice :D

    WJKK WJKF!

  • music "is the highest form of art and those who understand it, is the highest form of worship - Swami Vivekananda.

  • said like a true ustad,it's nice to hear words of wisdom sometimes

    thanks

    WJKK WJKF!

  • The theme of Indian classical music can be determined from the raga. This is Raga Darbari, a night raga, and was developed for court singing. This one is not religious, although Indian classical music has religious beginnings. It is possible for classical music to be religious too (kinda like Beethoven's 9th, 3rd mvmt).

  • R.I.P Pandit Kishan Maharaj

  • Todya heard the new of Panditji Kishan Maharaj is no more, he is one who represented the true Banares Gharana. As a person he was one of the most admired from my childhood and was a down to earth person, meeting everyone with respect in Kabir Chaura. God give the strength to the family to come out of this loss.

  • Undoubtedly his soul has merged with the Maha Atama

  • What the hell? This doesn't sound like Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden at all! The lyrics are totally all wrong and he screwed up the solo, as well.

  • lol

  • Wrong song lol!!! This is "Aces High".

  • @generalghruff take a hike loser! I know what run to the hills is, I am a big maiden fan. But that does not mean you've show disrespect towards these legends. Dickinson would totally disapprove!

  • This guy is a genius!

  • I am glad to have these old great artists, but why not put young artists also in the prime of their playing skills?

  • Thank you for sharing this masterpiece!

  • Both ((Late) Vilyat Khan Sahib and Pt. Kishan Maharaj represent the very top of the indian classical music. I was fortunate to have known them both. Music, for them was oxygen. They could play, teach and just talk about music without ever worrying about money.

Both of them very spritual beings. Khan Sahibs sons, Shujat and Hidayat are good too. But Khansahib had his own style of playing then singing then smiling and then playing... Godbless him.

  • You were blessed with the company of Saints.

  • all you people that put down music you dont like or understand is because your not a musician, or immature or both.

listen to all the instruments individually.

    dont be so tunnell visioned

  • Hi guys!!please listen to the moment between 4:38 and 4:52.

the guy that is right from Ustadji played the wrong note at 4:42 and

then he made Ustadji smile ironically with his attempt

to conceal his mistake during 4:45 and 4:50!

    :))

  • no he didn't it was the complexity of the development of that certain phrase. he hits the sympathetic string which creates that sound

  • Thank you for explaining me that.I didn't want to hurt somebody's feelings. I only admire with their mastery over the instrument and their musical minds!only professional and devoted player could make an advantage even from his mistake, like the man did.

  • Allah reward you bountifully in the Hereafter Ustadji. I miss you alot.

  • god i wish he was on myspace so i could add his songs to my profile

  • why are the two women sitting behind ??

  • Those are his groupies!

  • but what is their role in the group ?

  • those ladies are the tanpura players. The tanpura is the drone instrument in Hindustani (north Indian) music. They are playing a specified droning pattern on four strings, usually tuned PA, sa, sa, SA (or sol, do, do, DO) Pretty sweet, eh!

  • This music should be hear from soul & heart......and not from ears........Its really awesome !!! His voice touching the heart and reaching me to life......just experiance the vibrations in you......

  • I don't understand what is meant by his singing "sucks" in comparison. Do you mean his ideas? How he is presenting the raga? The sound of his voice?

I really appreciate videos like this. Being a student of sitar, to have the opportunity to see and hear a sitarist of Vilayat Khan's skill vocalize during a concert is invaluable and fascinating. Things like this go beyond normal music criticism.

  • Guyz.. grow up an get a life.. you all seem to be some nagging child fighting ovr somthng not in picture.. This immortal maestro introduced gayaki ang.. and its his style to sing.. listen to his recital..no fuckin dam even comes close to him..

  • Shut up,enjoy it.Present YOURSELF by music.(if you can play)

  • video is awesome. all instrumentalists are awesome singers. this is the proof. if u have heard any of ali akbar khan's vocals, that is just more proof. this vid is just jaw-dropping awesome.

  • shut the hell up everybody, you all sucks hi hi

  • is it just me or is the sound is a bit distorted on this video. still a phoenomenal piece by pandit ji and khan sahab. was this in the late 90s

  • Vilayat Khan is one of the greatest musician ever.

For us listeners to comment such strong words is just wrong. There are recordings of him giving full vocal concerts from the 50s. He was a fine singer. He is the creator of the gayki ang. (vocal style)Now almost all sitar players fellow the gayki ang.

Please enjoy the music of such great artists and reserve ur comments.

  • but ustadji created a new world of allap. his allap is based on dhrupadang. in the antara part of his allap we can hearmurkis and khatkas distinctively. in the vcd of hameer we heared this type of aggression.

  • I agree that Ustad's older recordings from 60's are matchless! This video is a good momento, though, of an artist who is peerless in fast gat taans on sitar.

  • eeeeeee

  • I've heard Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan sing this raga (same composition) and well, Vilayat Khan just makes a fool of himself. His singing is, to put it mildly, really bad. Should have stuck to sitar.

  • If you would have known that Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib is only a sitraist not a singer so you taking the piss like that is not right. You should respect such a great musician who has given us so much.

  • I know he's a great sitarist - that's why he should stick to sitar playing. But you can't deny that his vocals suck. Gayaki Ang or not, it doesn't sound good.

  • Also if you would have known Ustad Vilayat Khan was the main figure in the Gayaki Ang style of sitar which an imitation of the voice so he is just trying to engage the audience and trying to make them relate the voice he plays on his sitar

  • You sound to be a third rate listenerwho dose not have sense to realise how such great artist create a life out of a plain devotion to music! A person who compares skills of artist is poor ignorant to music!

  • C'mon dude I know he's a brilliant sitar player. But you cannot deny that his singing sucks.

  • One who calls Vilayat Khan's singing "It sucks", has no idea of Indian singing culture whatsoever. Educate yourself, I should say,and start to enjoy this singing too!

  • Lol you loser don't you know other famous Indian singers? Like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Rashid Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, etc.? Vilayat Khan's singing pales in comparison to these singers. Obviously, he is a great sitar player, but he should stick to sitar only.

  • Korektphool, thanx for your "loving" comment. By saying things like this you are like someone who spoils a person's joy and happiness while he is eating a great meal. And that becoz it makes YOU feel 'better'. Just can of course deny it, I know it is true. Shame!

  • Firstly go learn English before you type comments: I can barely understand what you're saying. Secondly, even if you think that this abysmal singing is good, surely you must admit that there exist far greater singers? And thirdly my saying that Vilayat Khan's singing is disagreeable to my ears does in no way spoil your enjoyment of the music.

  • please listen to the alap on that DVD and you will hear Vilayat Khan in its best form. Pure, soft, soulfull, amazing!

  • I share Sitariya's comments. In India they used to say of Vilayat

'leave the vocals to the vocalists'. Yes I remember Vilayat in his top form. Ahh shame age may mellow but that full bodied performance withers hence old sitar players would go on to play surbahar.

  • dear drofla135drofla,

please listen to the alap on that DVD and you will hear Vilayat Khan in its best form. Pure, soft, soulfull, amazing!

  • Check out Vilayat's Yaman recorded in 1960's, a concert in front of a live audience at the BBC with Pt Manik Rao Popatkar accompanying on Tabla. Also check Vilayat's LP of Raga Shankara. That's how I remember him. I liked Vilayat's Gat portion of Darbari on his old LP from the 60's but his alap never got me off as the Raga was never designed to be played on his small thumri type instrument. I got a nice recording of his Puria live in front of King of Afghanistan!

  • Hi

Is it possible for me to have the Puria please

  • I find your comments fascinating! I agree with your assessement of Vilayat Khan Saheb's Alap part. No one does the drut fast taans like him. Alap and Jor is another matter. Ravi Shankar is matchless here. Then there is the great Mushtaq Ali Khan. His 60 min long AIR Mian Ki Malhar is other-wordly!

I am impressed with your collection of Vilayat Khan, live and rare. Are you open to sharing these treasure with other music lovers. I can offer something of equal value in return. Please advise.

  • drofla135drofla,

    Impressive comments and collection.

Are you open to sharing the music tresures of Vilayat khan?

  • beatiful

  • one of the greatest exponents of this Sitar - thank you for the clip

  • Thanks for sharing the clip. It has more emotional value than than musical one. Old Ustad, singing more than playing sitar with his rather mediocre son. I would prefer to see this video on mute and play his absolute majestic Darbari LP in the background.

  • I agree Rag Darbari with Shankar Ghosh on tabla is one of the best Gems of Indian Classical music ever ! But then again we all grow old and instead of amazing technique we feel the soul.
