Everything Henson ever did breaks my heart a little bit because he had such a clear view of what he thought the world should be- in some ways he was the perfect hippy- he believed in equality and friendship and fun.
This is what was wrong with that whole general time period. This is what Fraggle Rock was all about: Deeply anxious characters and the tensions of the unspoken complexities of their relationships. TIGHT FACES. Everything about the Fraggles is deeply stressful with a mellow kind of mask on. It's like looking into the frightened eyes of a generation experiencing life within a plasticine precipice of the unknown blackness that awaits but must never be spoken of. Compare to the Muppets and see!
I think this is one of the most powerful episodes. The things they say to each other when they're trapped in there, it's the kind of beauty that makes tears warm up behind your eyes.
Aaaw, nice to hear this song again. :) This is actually the first time I hear it as the original version. I've earlier heard this in Finnish. It is a long time I have watched this episode...
I saw this episode for the first time the other day.
It (and especially this song) nearly made this 24 year old guy lose it. I knew they weren't going to die, but they do it so well that suspension of disbelief WILL happen each time.
Red is my favourite Fraggle.. because on the surface she SEEMS zany and loud but really she is sensitive and beautiful.. I think she hides behind outward confidence a very very gentle heart :)
@poppymoone: This is true and Gobo knows this better than anyone, since she acts sweet and loveable generally, but when he acts superior and leaderly, she goes off at him, causing what many fans consider "lover's spats" between the two (and this can be inferred due to show hints and of Red's own official confession to an admiration of Gobo when interviewed by SFX recently during a promotional tour).
@pingo44224: Though true, they would still be promotional, as are all of Red's appearances, since all of them are promoting the DVD releases, the Fraggle Rock comic book--along with other merchandise--the feature film in development, and the series' return to TV via The Hub.
this were the real visionaries who made authentic kiddies shows that even appeals to adult still
classics were the original and the quality, efforts put into this kiddies show cannot be denied when you compare it with the crap being showed today on the television
fragle rock was a most awesome show..loved it then and even now!
Great harmonizing, love the use of Karen's voice as the bottom part, inverting the sound for a change. And one thing I still won't understand is why on the album they put in guitar to the a capella. I understand it was probably recorded that way to keep time, but that a capella is the way it opens.
@rattlesnake81 That's why my mother had the sense to use the V. C. R. when I was a little kid. She told my brother and I she wanted her grandkids to be able to watch it (and at the time, there was no such thing as DVDs). As I'm getting older now, I'm learning to understand what she meant.
YOU CANT GO BACK. NO ONE WAS EVER NORMAL AFTER A 'FROGGLE ROCK EPISODE' MY FRIEND. I MISS THOSE DAYS. IM CRYING AS I WATCH THIS.. YOU ARE SO DAMN RIGHT. YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE MAGIC. IT STAYS IN YOUR HEAD FOREVER.
@bigjustinturbo That's exactly right! You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing. I am so happy to still have my imagination and creativity from childhood. Never let go of the magic, people. The best people always have a little inside. :)
@jilliankristine Haha, I'm 29 and just watched this for the first time since I was four a couple nights ago. Tell me you didn't get choked up when Red asks Boober what it might be like to die.... What a great show. Complete series on DVD, here I come! :D
@lorrierack Well, no... but really, did anyone EVER make a kids' show like this, before or since? Fraggle Rock is just an amazing anomaly no matter how you look at it. I don't really even like thinking of it as a "kids' show" at all. It seems more like just a show created by a group of adults who were somewhat childlike deep down, and yet knew the troubles of life from an adult perspective... who were just trying to make a great show.
It was aimed at kids, adults, or anyone who was willing to listen. Saying it was for kids was just the excuse they used to get it on the air. Or something like that, lol.
Boober: I don't think anyone really knows, Red. Once, when I was doing the laundry, this big soap bubble floated up to the top. It was all round and shiney...then it was gone. Don't cry, Red. We had some good times.
Red: But I thought you didn't like the good times.
Boober: Well, sometimes I did. But that's a secret.
Then the roof suddenly drops a few inches and we go into the clip. To think, they thought these lyrics would be their last words.
creepycritters: Personally, I prefer Red/Gobo (that has more evidence for it, especially via their "competitions"), Mokey/Boober (the flower child with the broody pessimist), and Wembley/Lou (see 'We Love You Wembley').
creepycritters: She's a "throwaway character" (i.e. used in one episode), who is the only Fraggle willing to help Wembley when everyone else wanted Wembley to help them. The two sang a love song, "Learn to Love a Wimp" near the end of the episode after Wembley confessed his confused feelings (after the love potion idea from Majorie failed).
Same here! Red and Boober are cute (I guess), but Red and Gobo are the kind of couple that would insult each other for their idea of love, then suddenly start kissing, lol!
I remember seeing this as a little kid. I didn't fully understand this episode, but I remember it as genuinely making think past what I normally thought about.
They were terrified that they were going to die. Mortality is part of life... they don't make kids TV like this anymore (of course, they largely didn't make it like this back then, either)
This makes me remember watching this with my daughter when she was little =] it was her favorite show, thanks for sharing! made me smile and her to lol
Rubicon: No. Some--like Jim Henson (the Muppet creator), Richard Hunt (an ace Muppeteer), and Jerry Juhl (the head creative producer behind this show)--are no longer with us. *sniff* How we need them nowadays, especially in the world of business...if only to show corporate heads that stupidity, sex, violence, and swearing don't need to be included in programs to gain attention & make an impact.

@collgoff because this is the episode when they confront their own mortality after a cave-in. They have a conversation that says something like "What do you think it feels like to die" they are running out of oxygen in this scene hence the restrained singing.
Oh I've been after this song ever since it was first shown but thought it as called 'try a little longer'......also recorded if from the tv with my tape recorder - thanks so much for putting it up (so pleased they made it out of that cavern)

Wow, found the song I was looking for on the first try. Yeah know, I was young enough when I first saw this ep that I actually worried that Boober and Red might die. It's kind of weird that I remember that.

OK, this is from memory, so it is just the "gist" of what they said. And I will have to reply to myself to get it all in.
Red: Are you getting tired?
