I know that the official interpretation is of child abuse, but I prefer a Christian/Biblical allegory.

For me, the lyrics seem to show that Christ "failed" his very Old Testament "father", and was actually loved more by his mortal mother, while the "father" (God) sees him as nothing but shame.

It fits in so well with the music, and the lyrics kind of do compliment this. For me, I like to picture this song as describing the crucifixion.

I have another interpretation. A mother that belonged to a sect followed some weird practices that caused the death of her child. The "father" would be "God" and the mother would be real. Eventually she stood and realized what she had done. There are Christian or other sects that forbid medical treatment.

The thing is - you can have many sensible interpretations and all may be true. :)

Thank you very much for posting this. I loved MDB back when I was lucky enough to get their demo before they were signed, but lost hope when they changed their musical style. (The brutality and the Death Metal vocals in favor of the clean singing and more romantic musical direction) Their first two albums were brutal as hell. Hav`nt heard them since Turn Loose the Swans but heard that they brought back the Death vocals on The Dreadful Hours. My first time hearing it. Faith is renewed.
