In this great soprano we can easily enjoy the "russian school" In those days, performing Pucinni was very rare(the performance of west pieces where not like today, they have also they own composers etc, etc). Not to good the diction(nothing terrible when we hear singers singing in their mother tongue with errors(forgivenesses, nervs, stress)but the essential and the important is there.A great performance! A great soprano, voice dark and bright where drama requieres.Good to learn.
I love her in this, she is PERFECT! the voice, the face, the acting! How horrible so many recordings of her were distroyed- it was an act against humanity- not just art. Because music IS our humanity! :)
Nushika9, you are not right. This video was made later than 40s. Vishnevskaya made her debut in Bolshoy in 1952. Her performance of Aida was in 1958, but this video was made later - in 1960s. I saw her as Aida in Bolshoy that time and I can say that she looked just like in this video. You are right, she didn't starred in the movie "Eugeniy Onegin" (though she sung Tatiana). The reason was simple - she was pregnant at that time. Some years later I saw her as Tatiana on stage. She looked great

It is wonderful to hear this record of her in her prime. Now I know why she is so revered. I only heard her live in the early 60s (with Rostropovich as her piano accompaniest!!), by which time her voice had taken on some of the shrill edge which became her reputation in the West when she finally began to travel outside USSR. She remained beautiful and dramatic, so I thought those traits may have been the prime assets that made her a favorite. Now I know the excellence of her voice in its prime.
I love Galina's Tosca, which for me, is the best Tosca I've ever heard. Lucky for us, there's a recording available. Her Aida is absolutely gorgeous. Her technique is solid gold. It was sung in Russian but I don't believe I've ever heard it sung more beautifully, even in Italian!
When was it made? At the end of 40-s, or when? In 50-s Vishnevskaya was already too heavy to look such way. Is it really her? She had beautiful voice, no doubt about it. But already in 50-s, in the famous movie-opera Eugene Onegin, where she sang, but not play, Tatyana , her voice is of a different sound, heavier also. Is it really the clip of Vishnevskaya?
I don't understand. All photos and videos I have seen of Vishnevskaya in the 50's and 60's show her exactly with those looks, perhaps slightly fatter in the 60's. As for her voice, I've noticed she had a tremendous control over her voice, so that it sounded youthful and slender or heavier and plummier according to the role and moment in the opera.
I was born in Moscow, Homoclassicus. When she sang the part of Tatyana in the famous and very beautiful Soviet times movie "Eugene Onegin", she was already looking sufficiently heavy not to play this part. The movie was produced in 1958.This video of Aida could be made only before that time, and essentially before, like at the end of 40-s. Being able to watch her on TV in 50-s, I do not remember slender Vishnevskaya. That's why I doubt video authenticity. It is all I can say on the subject.
This video doe look very 1940's. I look at various films from various decades of the 20th century & this one does look to be 40's. I love Vishnevskaya & own her Tosca recording but it's a pity her earlier recordings were destroyed. What a loss to the world. Also, I thought she was singing Aida in Russian but she's singing it in Italian - and in the most beautiful manner I've ever heard in my life.
I thought, that Leontyne Price was the best Aida of all times. I hate to admit it, but she is not. I cannot believe my ears and eyes. Galina Vishnevskaya is is absolutely outstanding.
High Camp but Wonderful singing. Shame about the italian thought, which is very poor. Can't understand a word of it. Or wouldn't if I didn't know it.
Her complete Aida from Covent Garden is wonderful along with a Tosca with Bergonzi and the late Peter Glossop. The best acted Tosca I ever saw and I've seen lots.
What an extraordinary artist! Too bad her career was over after she defected. To destroy her work was a crime against civilization. This was low even for the Soviets.
Amazing artist. If you have a chance to see her films like Katerina Izmailova you will be blown away by how she so translates from stage to film acting so effortlessly.
Yes, thank you so much for this posting - it provides a real insight into Galina's art at its best and shows what a wonderful voice she had when younger. It's a pity that later in her career she tended to shriek and wobble - a bit like Callas come to think of it - though neither lost their artistry.
I'm just speechless!!! Wonderful performance!!! Amazing voice!!! Divine... I've recently bought the DVD of the filmed Shostakovich opera Katerina Izmailova in which she sings & acts Katerina... Simply out of this world!!!
Oh & have you noticed how modern her dress & hair-style are in this video? Wow!!!
I read her bio a long time ago, always remembered her story of her flight from Russia- but this is my first time hearing her sing- FANTASTIC! Such a lovely voice- floating pianissimi and wonderful legato... obviously an under-recorded and appreciated singer!
A magnificent artist! In the same class with Callas and Varnay, I say. Total stage animals who act as well as they sing. Thanks so much for posting this! :o)
what is the name of the autobiography? I really would like to read it! I just watched a film about her and her husband, she is fascinating and one of my heroes.
Amazing indeed! She had one of the most interesting voices I've ever heard, it's so youthful and suave but also so dramatic and metallic! And I'm surprised she's also a great Aida, though I could already imagine that ...
She is so beautiful women...
