I liked Have Gun Will Travel, but unfortunately rarely got to watch it ... as it was on opposite Lawrence Welk ... yuck ... I'd completely forgotten Sugarfoot... But who could forget Cheyenne? Clint Walker at 6'6" with a chisled physique is unforgettable. Man, there were so many western TV series back then.
Phyllis coates played Lois Lane only for the first season on the Superman TV Series with George Reeves....Noel Neill played Lois Lane thereafter until the series ended in 1958...She got the part due mostly to her having played Lois Lane in the movie serials during the 1940's....Hamilton Burger actually beat Perry Mason twice in court during the run of the Perry Mason show on CBS....The occassion of his beating Mason the first time was big time news back in the day.....
@elc1960 Talk about "senior moments": In addition to the "M Squad"--"Police Squad" connection, I just realized for the first time (after how many years???) that Paladin had a KNIGHT (instead of just a chess piece) on his holster!
Noel Neill, BTW, was 1000 times hotter than Phyllis Coates. I watched "The Adventures of Superman" when I was in first grade, and Noel used to turn me on like you wouldn't believe! (The only time I was turned on even more was when Joy Lansing guest starred.)
The Zucker brothers admitted a few years ago that their "Police Squad"/"Naked Gun" theme was inspired by the "Naked City" theme. The theme you have to "The Real McCoys" is not the original - the original was sung by pop singer Jimmie Rodgers ("Honeycomb", "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine"). Hard to believe Will Hutchins would play Dagwood Bumstead 10 years later on "Blondie".
Television is now 60-years old, as the 1950s saw the beginning of the Golden Age of Television, growth until this year 2010, with the new HDTV standards this 21st century. What remains to be seen is how television survives the Internet, that has become very popular.
@alleycat62021 You're right. I don't know where I got my Phyllis' mixed up. Phyllis Coates played in the B&W first season then that other lady came in. I don't remember her name. They used to show Superman on ALN a few years ago.
I did not realize (or remember) that the Leslie Neilsen "Naked Gun" movies also spoofed the "M Squad" theme song. Also, it has now faded from memory but Walter Brennan as his role of "Amos McCoy" became most Baby Boomer's grandfather sterotype, and served him well playing that role in all those Disney pictutes and "The Guns of Will Sonnett"
@alleycat62021 "The Restless Redhead" was the very first episode of PM (whether they were aired in the order they were filmed, I don't know). According to Barbara Hale, Perry lost (or at least failed to clearly win) at least three cases. I've only seen one of these, "The Case of the Terrified Typist," and it was confusing as hell; everything hinged on a fraudulent identity. In Canada, BTW, PM is aired with discriptive narration for the visually impaired. Interesting, to say the least....

The Real McCoys...nost people don't remember that this was the series that the idea for "The Beverly Hillbillies" was stolen from.

Television was worth watching back then. What without the political correctness and other nonsense they have these days.

Sorry - I meant the "M-Squad" theme. You know how these senior moments are.

@terentii I live about six blocks from her childhood home. She came out with a book on her life story, with lots on the making of the superman show.

The theme music for THE THIN MAN reminds me of the I SPY theme music.

Kate, I'll bet that theme song scared Hamilton Burger too! Do you realize that since he was always up against Perry, he NEVER won a case???

@alleycat62021 : That's because he was such a HAM. BURGER. ;]

When I was a kid the theme song from the Perry Mason show scared me.
katesgram 2 years ago
It scared me too! I was always just put to bed when it came on. Funny the things you remember that scared you when you were a young kid.
dub6951 1 year ago
@katesgram The theme is called "Park Avenue Beat," and was written by Fred Steiner, who composed a lot of the music for "Star Trek."

I read once that granpappy davis from the Mcoy's was gay.

@cravenmoorrrrrrrrr Nope. Grandpa Walton (Will Geer) was, though. And, it's Grandpappy AMOS, by the way.

@elc1960 I remember when he played a Commie sleeper agent in the second or third year of "Mission: Impossible!" (Geer, not Brennan).

I think the jack kelly episodes of maverick have more action and humor [ less gambling ].
spacepatrolman 2 years ago
Those Jack Kelly stories certainly had more light romance.
