Ah is it just me or does Edward Villella totally remind anyone else of Al Pacino's character in Donnie BRasco?? The voice, the mannerisms. Random.. I know..
you guys have to remember, as a artistic director, if you have a wonderful young potential filled student, you would rather help them grow into becoming a principal dancer for your company instead of selling their souls to the media and hollywood. To tell you the truth i find it more admirable to say that your a dancer at a world known ballet company than i was a top 10 in SYTYCD. yes sytycd has done tons for dance, but the dancing its all for media, no real investment into each piece.
@flexybabe69 I completely disagree with you. Dance is dance, it doesn't matter where it's performed... and "no real investment into each piece"?! Have you even watched the show?!
@orangefanta22 Yeah I have watched the show since season 1. But are you seriously telling me that a 2 minute piece is invested as a 2 hour production with costumes that costs thousands of dollars? Choreographers in SYTYCD only have 4 hours to teach a 2 minute piece. Ballet companies take weeks. Comparing SYTYCD to Ballet, is like comparing Britney Spears to an Opera Singer. Sure they both sound good, but that doesnt mean it's good quality or very good training behind that sound.
personally; i think it would be a good idea to have alex on sytycd...but im guessing the people from his camp and of his profession frown upon shows like sytycd and that kind of thing...its a good thing, it brings positive attention to his studio and of course himself...
If I had a choice between being a principle dancer in a professional ballet company, or a flash in the pan on a TV show, I would pick the pro company. He is a money maker for the company, so they had to keep him. That's what business is about. He can come back to the TV show later and even better! We will wait for him. :)
Alex is a jerk for dishonoring the company. Contracts aren't that long. He's only 22 and the choreography at Miami are light years ahead of the tv show. He's a principal dancer for a famous dancer at a renound company.
I disagree, if they were smart they would of let him do the show...it would of given the Miami City Ballet so much free press and I bet their ticket sales would go up
I know. Its through sytcd that i get interested in Miami city ballet. Would be fantastic to see him on the show, representing Miami ballet don't u all think?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dude right on like seriously i didnt think hes that good plus why would do that to yourself hell no dont go against Miami city ballet their the shit why would you let it go for a stupid competition
He is definitely NOT A JERK! All he wanted to do was be well versed in other dance styles beyond ballet since there are so many others He felt trapped in doing just ballet and he had an emotional breakdown when he found out he wasn't able to get out of his contract. It doesn't matter if it's a renound company if you're not happy there and it's not in your heart.
Miami City Ballet, as with almost any contemporary ballet company out there today, does not only employ 'classical' ballet in its repertoire; there are plenty of modern and jazz pieces in their repertory. The only thing you won't usually find in a ballet company today probably is tap.
Yeah. I believe thats what happened to Danny in S3. He just got up and left ABT. I know this person that just signed on with a ballet company ans she does say that ballet is very repetitive and basically every day is the same. I'm just wondering is this true?
um number one, he was a corps with Miami, not a principal. even now, his only a soloist and that was after he tried out at sytycd. I think it would be intersting for him to represent miami ballet. when he performs solos he could do like a Don Quixote Variation, it owuld certainly give a twist to the show of course. there was this girl in sytycd canada, lily bertcham? Her solos were en pointe which made it interesting.
My dance teacher met him once. They had a "meet cute," as coined by Roger Ebert. Which means a rather funny and cute introduction.
They were dancing at the same show and she accidently stepped on his toe.
This guy, Villella was renown as the bad boy of ballet. A dancer who was born and raised in Queens, into baseball and boxing. But was pushed into the life by his mother (who needed day care). But he fell in love and became a dancer full-time.

the reason alex wanted to go into SYTYCD is because he wanted to do other styles other than ballet he should be in the competition

totally agree with you. Why the hell would he want to enter a comp?! He already IS a dancer!!

It's not that Vilella didn't LET him be on the show...its because when you become top 20 you get paid and that was against his contract with MCB.
