Grrr I hate people who can't just share re divas glory, some one saying why call her a champion when she's lost more than she's won, because she got fucking better as she went on, just because ur sad pathetic lives have amounted to anything doesn't mean u have to put down one of australias top race horses, get a fucking life!
@MakybeDiva101 I don't see why people just can't respect honour & love all of the great champion race horses Australia has had were pretty lucky to have such great race horses flying the flag for us i'm proud & love everysingle one of them for their deeds on the track so i agree with you i hate people who just can't be proud of her she was legend the queen to Pharlap the queen of the track .
Best horse since Phar Lap is a big call. There have been some pretty good horses to have raced in Australia in the intervening 70-odd years. Not doubting she was a marvel, but she recieved a rating of 129. Kingston Town for example recieved a rating of 137. Not to mention the likes of Tulloch, Manikato, Vain, Black Caviar, So You Think etc. who all have higher ratings. 3 M' Cups is incredible, but she had gift weights. She got 55kg's in 04. Galilee was allotted 67.5kg's for his 2nd attempt in'66
The Diva's colt's racing name is Rockstardom. He made his racing debut on the 24th of August, 2010, to finish in 4th place in Geelong. In 2002, Makybe Diva made her racing debut at Benalla... she won 4th place.
@XxBrokenBackRiderxX apparently her next foal (due in 2011) is going to be sired by Lonhro! My two favourite racehorses that are still alive, going to have a foal... BEST MIX EVER! :D can't wait!
@Nutala94 her first foal was called Rockstar, though it was just a nickname that he was given, he will most likely race under a different name (if they race him) as he was sold. Don't think he's been on the track yet...
I hasten to add, to my remarks below, that John Henry was a 2 time Horse of the Year in N. America and a multiple champion. However, compared to Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, and the like, our love for him surpassed his Timeform rating!!!
Does anyone know the wonderful song? It complimented her so well.
Timeform ratings are not the true measure of a champion. Ultimately that's decided by the depth of people that give their heart. Here in the USA John Henry wasn't much of a champion -- but he was a champions champion. in the hearts and minds of people.
The record speaks for itself. Diva showed up on the biggest days for her biggest races. You have to love the girl!! Long live Diva and Sunline in memory.
@snogand The song is My Name Is Lincoln by Steve Jablonsky. It's from the movie The Island :) I thought it suited her very well too. I always think of horses when I hear it :D sorry it took so long to reply!
i didnt comment to trigger fiery people with small person syndrome into starting an argument. there is 2 sides to every spectrum.
and ultimately. its the horse running the race. not the humans. she was untouchable from 2400 +. but some of the claims on here are ludicrous and misinformed so thats why i say what i say without waiting around for your opinion. no where did i state.. "howzathumdinger" please comment
In regards to my previous comment, I thought I'd make the calculation a bit more accurate.
Phar Lap ran the 1930 Melbourne Cup as a 2 mile race (3218m) whereas now it has been converted to the metric system (3200m).
Therefore, I divided Phar Lap's time in SECONDS by 3218 and multiplied it by 3200 which would have equaled his time if he had run a metric Melbourne Cup.
@91cowgirl that's some calculating right there! I never woulda been able to work that out, but that's pretty smart really! Would have been a good match race to have seen if it had ever been possible
Have you noticed that both of Australia's best racehorses of all time (Phar Lap and Makybe Diva) were bred in other countries? Phar Lap in New Zealand and the Diva in England. Doesn't make them any less champions though.
actually it makes a world of difference (not with pharlap but with diva)
dnt get me wrong, she was an amazing mare but she was bred to run long distances which europe still focuses on to a FAR higher degree than australia
so a mare born and bred to contest europes greatest races which are all staying contests gets sent to australia to race against sprinter/milers over 3200m
pharlap was different. australia was still a very open ended racing scene 80 years ago with emphasis on distance.
Why dont all of yous give it a rest !!!! Makybe Diva is better than all of the other race horses, thats why she is a chmapion who becomes a legend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! duh
Why dont you think about all the horse that beat Lonhro!!! adn the horses that beat the greats, like Phar Lap etc... All horses lose a couple of races!
Guess it's a bit like trying to explain the benefits of a Palestinian State to a bunch of Right Wing Jews.
Maybe you should google "A Ferrari of a Thoroughbred" by the legendary Bill Whittaker.
While I may be just another bum on the net, Bill Whittaker was one of the most respected racing journos ever to grace the world. He didn't believe Lonhro was over rated.
im glad you like it :D Yeh i miss watching her race too, but atleast she had a happy ending unlike so many of the other great racehorses out there. I hope they decide to race Rockstar! I'd LOVE to see how he'd go :)
I agree the filly by Funanchi Pegisus will be better then Rockstar who is by Gallieo...She has been serviced by Encosta De Lago now so see how much that goes for...I reakon Lonhro should service her next or Elvstroem should...they had some good battles they would surely produce another stayer
yeh definately! I think he'll do well if they decide to race him. Actually, speaking of the lil rock star (or not so little anymore haha) there was an article in the latest Sunday Mail (22nd March) about him. Just a little snippet down the side of page 9. Theres a lil black and white piccy of him (he looks GORGEOUS!!!) and it says he'll be going to the Sydney Easter Yearling SAles (held April 5??) and they expect him to go for around $4.5 million!!
thankyou :) I'm not sure why it would have been coming up with video no longer available ?? I haven't removed the video. perhaps youtube was just having problems??
Not taking anything away from the Diva (greatest stayer mare in my opinion), but there is no telling how just how fast Phar Lap could have been if hed been allocated a decent weight. Even in his 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap win he was assigned top weight over his American rivals at 58.5kg (next was Doctor Freeland at 54.4kg). Jim Pike also never once had to whip Phar Lap to victory; I think he did it for the love of galloping & the adoring crowds!
Some horses are just made to run :) But yeh, i agree, there's no saying how he would have gone compared to makybe. The only way would be for them to BOTH be alive (well.. obviously lol) and give them the same weight ratio to their own weight to even see who was better... it would have been the match race of the century!!
:) It's true that she was never pushed. I mean, you just have to watch the videos of her racing and you can see that the whip was never actually touched against her flanks or shoulders, therefore she was never hit with the whip, and Glen always stopped with the whip before they reached the finish... leaving it up to Makybe to finish the race however hard she wanted to :) She was a great horse!
Yeh... just think tho... in years to come people will be saying 'Wish I'd been alive to see the Diva' and we'll be the lucky ones who get to say we did :) maybe not in REAL real life, but we went along the journey with her :)
There is no comparison for legends so pls stop comparing.Everyone has their own liking but that don't make the legends become nothing.
Pharlap is the most remembered horse in australia and is great if not inmortal.
Makybe diva for me is the greatest mare ever in this world. If anyone think she is not than make a horse win three melbourne cup again then i will believe it
I agree that the horses shouldn't be compared. They are all legends in their own way. Lonhro mastered the sprint. Pharlap gave people hope during the Depression. Makybe did wat people said no horse could. and so many other horses have done similar. But just because some won more than others doesn't mean they should be considered any less. They are all champions and all deserve to be honored in such a way. Each horse means something important to SOMEONE.
my mother was a big fan of horse racing and worked for the TAB. she saw the third and final wion of makybe diva and died the next day. wednesday nov 2nd 2005.
i am soooo glad she got to see such a great race. that - she really enjoyed
i really dont care if a horse is trained by anyone. but if they were born in a country thats where their from, they are not the nationality of the person that trained them?
Her foal...Known by some as (RockStar) is being sold at the Inglis Easter Sales in 2009...They are saying he will break the Australasian record maybe the world record...There saying 5 - 6 million he will go for...its on the Makybe Diva website Tony Stantic has said he is selling him in Melbourne next easter...All he has to do is win a couple of big races and he will become Australia's leading Sire...if he is kept here...
As for that bloke who reckons she wasn't as good as Kingston Town - Kingston Town was a Sydney cat, who couldn't win a single race at Flemington - not one - and happened to come along went there was a lack of any decent horses racing in Australia (apart from Manikato). If Dulcify had not been killed in the Cup of '79 he would have donkeylicked Kingston Town over any distance, any racecourse.
No offence, but Makybe Diva was a good horse, a legend, but not a real champion... She only scored about 15 wins or something, and when you look at it, the real champions like Kingston Town earned 30 wins, double her amount of wins. But she is still a beautiful horse and did end her career well
I can see your point, but Makybe wasn't entered in many small races. The races she won were the big ones, against the big guns. I thought people entered horses in small races and slowly worked their way up, but after working in the industry for a while I found out that it depends on the horse's talent. Makybe moved up to the big races quickly because she was so good. She won 3 melbourne cups, which no horse has never done and probably won't do for some time.
it was feat that only a mare could achieve to be honest due to handicapping.. she was an awesome horse but i still feel that a few horses (lonhro, northerly and sunline) would have put paid to her upto 2000m.. beyond 2000m she was unquestioned
That would be because she is a Stayer - and excluding Northerly - they are middle distance horses. This is an actual distinction in racing that is made. Thats why Lonhro and Sunline never challenged the Melbourne Cup - because they were not in the same league when it comes to distance.
Redundant argument that can easily be countered with "Well over 2000 she would have creamed them! SO NER"
Then again, she has a win in the cox plate from one try. Lonhro failed... twice. Lonhro was overrated.
pfft.. ur one of those typical awald people who sees a good horse and the rest suck in comparison.. open ur eyes.. watch makybe diva in the australia cup lonhro was in... she went backwards at flemington.. her favourite track
Once again - Makybe was a stayer. Profound difference you need to look up.
Comparing the two is redundant.
Winning strike rate is equally so when they don't win the big race for their distance. Race him in Bathurst instead and its 100%. Don't mean a thing. Makybe got 3 wins from 3 starts at HER Premier G1 distance race.
Lonhro got 2 failures for 2 starts at his.
And if you call striking interference (protested) 'going backwards', then yes, I guess she did.
Yes but that was early on in Makybe's career as a race horse whereas Lonhro was more mature by then. Also, Lonhro was a sprint horse and Makybe a stayer, therefore wen they raced together at least one of them (in this case Makybe as she was just starting out) was not in their suited field.
Have you ever heard of Wakeful ? She ran 2nd in her only Melbourne Cup but I'd rate her effort above anything that Makybe Diva ever done.
Carrying 63.5 Wakeful was beaten a length to Lord Cardigan who carried 41.5kgs. THAT'S 22 KGS to a horse that won the Sydney Cup six months later with 56.5kgs.
You talk about stayers and sprinters yet Wakeful won the Oakleigh Plate Newmarket sprint double whilst also winning majors over 4800m !
Makybe Diva made her name against poor opposition.
I didn't want to go negative but your ignorance got the better of me.
To declare Lonhro over rated whilst rating Makybe Diva up with the best is insane. I wont have enough space to belt out the multitude of FACTS so I'll keep it simple.
Lonhro had 11 G1's and 10 G2's among his 26 wins with a strike rate of 74%. Only three horses in OZ history done better (Gloaming, Ajax, Carbine) which is amazing considering every start bar two was at stakes level.
Now Makybe Diva was a good stayer but the simple fact is that she finished her career with 15 wins to 21 losses.
The suggestion that she is great because she won three Melbourne Cups is flawed. Australia breeds sprinter/milers so for a horse like Lonhro to win 75% of his races against horses like Tie The Knot, Shogun Lodge, Elvstroem, Sunline, Grand Armee, Mummify, Defier, Private Steer, Clangalang etc speaks volumes.
Makybe Diva didn't have to carry huge weight against true stayers.
i agree with you.. lonhro was much better upto the crossover into staying and as a racehorse as a whole
he lost to northerly once for the record to whoever that was and beat 3 group 1 internationals.. 2 doncaster handicap winners, ajc derby winners .. tie the knot speaks for himself and shogun lodge would have beaten diva upto 2000m in my opinion.
i just think diva was overly embraced in a time when australia had lost its racehorses and needed one to state itself.
I don't agree with that statement. "The Diva was overly embraced in a time when Australia had lost it's racehorses".
Next time when you make a statement, or in your case, an opinion, do so with one that doesn't SUCK in all ways possible.
Just because she didn't have greatness bestowed upon her, she earn't he greatness. And for that, she will be remembered for her greatness. You and others, stop putting a champion down.
thats also your opinion and for the record. opinions can't suck.. just misguided and i don't believe it was wrong at all.
australia has had some champions such as kt and tulloch.. but makybe diva isnt near them. she won one race 3x.. stripping a race down... a race is a race.
horse wouldnt care about winning a melbourne cup or a trial at cranbourne. its the same to them
I'm sorry. Did I ask for you opinion again? Don't think so.
A race isnt just a race. Not one like the Melbourne Cup anyway.
Yeah, I'm sure they wouldn't care about winning a Melbourne Cup or a trial because they don't have the knowlege that us humans do, but this isn't about the horses caring about which races they win. There are plenty of people that would vouch for Makybe Diva anyday of the week, so you know what? Go be a pessimist on another page, not one trying to remember a LEGEND!
First, the reason Lonhro didn't run in the Melbourne Cup was because he wasn't trained to stay. This is because there's a lack of staying races at WFA in OZ. Being a stallion, Lonhro's connections wanted to focus on the shorter events for commercial reasons. Winning the Melbourne Cup does nothing for an entires value.
Finally, the majority of the world's premier races are at 2000m to 2400m. Lonhro met Makybe Diva once at 2000m and kicked her head in. She was 2nd up while he was 3rd up.
Seriously, im going to kick YOUR head in if you say one more god damn thing about who has beaten Makybe Diva! It's a page to remember a legend. And yes, that's what she was so fuck up and go be a pessimist somewhere else!!!
Name one sport where you can lose more than win and be declared a "CHAMPION"
The problem is that by suggesting Makybe Diva the greatest is disrespectful to those champions that have come before her.
Consider Sunline, a winner of 13G1's in an era of champions. She claimed the scalps of Sky Heights, Intergaze, Shogun Lodge, Testa Rossa, Ethereal, Defier, Tie The Knot, Universal Prince, Adam, Redoute's Choice not to mention Jim And Tonic + Fairy King Prawn in Hong Kong !
I never said she was the greatest, read back into my comments. Get your pessimist facts right before you put down me and a champion. So it's not disrespectful to other champions of the turf.
And I have considered them legendary racehorses but the fact of the matter is, this is a page for Makybe Diva fans, not ones that don't believe in her great success. Now I'm sorry that you cannot comprehend this, but don't come on this page and ruin an excellent tribute.
Oh and one more thing, I don't give a shit about what comes out of you pessimist brain. Try getting some optomism and embracing a racehorse that a nation stopped for 3 fucking times. Shove it up you arse, I have nothing more to say to you because if you can't be optomistic about the Diva, then chanel your dismal thoughts into some other video because I don't want to hear another damn word about who beat Makybe Diva or who was better than her. Get a real hobby rather than arguing 24/7 on youtube!
@blackmourning11 Depending on your definition of 'lose' there could be any number of sports where you could lose more than you win and be considered a champion. Golf would be one, just for starters. And how many tennis players win more than 50% of the Grand Slams they contest? It is sad that there are so many Diva-haters out there, who cannot deal with the fact that she did something that had never been done before, and won a race three times that most struggle to win ever once.
true do you have the DVD Makybe Diva: A champion becomes a legend...She was a freak...Her Cox Plate win sends shivers down my spin...Her third Melbourne Cup brings a tears to eyes
WHEN LONHRO BEAT MAKYBE DIVA the race was the Australian Cup over 2000m at Flemington.
Lonhro was 3rd up from a spell while Makybe Diva was 2nd up.
Makybe Diva was 1 week off her 5th birthday so forget about this crap about being immature...it was a well run race where Lonhro got checked yet still finished 5L in front of her.
Some of the horses that won races that M.Diva lost were Blues Explosion, Old Man, Karamzou, C'est Le Reve, La Sirenuse, Studebaker.
Dude... Get a grip. Lonhro won mediocre races. He never took a big prize and was always bested on the day by the better horses, such as Northerly. Now thats a horse I wish I got to see more of.
Just because it says "Group 1" doesn't mean squat. Its a bit like Sydney races are better quality than Brisbane races and Melbourne races are better quality than Sydney races.
Lonhro never marked his territory as a champion - IN MY OPINION. You just going to have to suck it up and deal with that.
Kingston Town was a gelding. There was nothing else to do BUT race him. He served no other purpose.
That said, if Kingston Town was so much better than her - why didnt he even win one Melbourne Cup? He was proven over the distance, so what went wrong?
the song is from the movie the Island with Ewen McGregor...The race track is Flemington in Melbourne, Australia where this mighty and legendary mare produce the 3 most magical melbourne cup wins in history and all in a row no other horse has ever done it and no other horse will.
I believe you have really captured the greatness of Makybe Diva, and all of her achievments. Hats off to you!! You really love horses!!! The music and pictures are fantastic. Hope to see more
its an exellent film. well every film with makybe diva in it i'm touched, but this one i was almost in tears. you did a great job creating this film. :)
yes , good horse , funny how the vrc wattered the track to help her out .... but she did beat the hacks she ran against .... would have been lucky to have gotten to within 8 lengths of phar lap , tulloch or bernborough at their best , and might aand power would have donkey licked her up to 2800m .
thankyou everyone for your comments! :) I'm glad you like it! I filmed the videos off the television (hence the bad quality lol) and the music is 'My Name Is Lincoln' by Steve Jablonsky. sorry it took a while for me to get back to you all :)
they have done computer analysis on all of the greats and ran in through the computer over 30,000 times with different weights and different track conditions and guess what makybe smashed them all...phar came 4th last...
Phar Lap came 4th to last?! aww :( lol. I think he was so legendary back then because he gave people a hope during the depression. He's still a horse hero in my eyes :) Same with Makybe. Her foal (nicknamed Rock Star) should be starting his racing career soon. He'd be 2 yrs old by now. :)
Aragorn, the VRC did not water the track for Makybe Diva - it was for the OTHER Diva Dermot Weld after his "Water the track or I'm not coming back" temper tantrum in 2003.
It would not have mattered any to the Diva. She won the 03 cup on a Good track. The other two were only Dead, which is not actually considered "Wet track".
But don't let facts stand in the way of your delusion.
Lee Freedman stated that if the track was to firm she would not run and that's a fact. Add this to the fact that she was not handicapped correctly and what transpired was criminal.
How does a horse only go up 3kgs (from 55kgs to 58kgs) for winning Mel.Cup, Australian Cup, BMW Stakes and Cox Plate?
As for the track being "DEAD" Bullshit.
The official line was that the track was dead but it was closer to slow. Everything was done to help M.Diva as she was the VRC's promotional tool.
I love this movie sticky awesome footage and awesome music. That 3rd Melbourne Cup will always stick with me. Critics said she couldn't win and wouldn't win. Carrying 58.5kg from barrier 14 I think it was a big task but she did it and did it in style.
Supposely there is this horse out there now that is the greatest. He is a 3 or 4 year old called Curlin. He won lasts years Breaders Cup and the Dubai Cup...He is a stayer like the greatest mare ever...What Im saying is Tony Stantic should let her run 2 more times. It one on one with Curlin. One on dirt and one on Turf. So one in America as long as the track in dead. Not to hard for both and one and felmington in Melbourne both over 3200m...I reakon she would smash Curlin.
yeah i know they stopped it after ruffian broke her leg...she was a true champion...maybe even a legend like the great mare Makybe was...she was never beaten...even foolish pleasure didn't beat her...She was in front when she broke down...She was never behind...Ruffian was a super horse and Makybe was a true legend.
Sunline was Kiwi, and in terms of Australian Champions, Lonhro would not be very high on the list. For that period Northerly was the champ until he became shinny. Lonrho was good, but he was always bested when it counted. Even Defier got the better of him twice.
Of this era, Makybe Diva stands alone. She rose to every challenge. They laid her in the cox plate and she won. They were laying her for the 05 cup and she won. She answered her critics twice already. Credit where its due, huh?
PS: The reason Sunline is a Kiwi is coz thats where she was trained by a Kiwi trainer. Makybe was trained in Australia which like Phar Lap makes her the product of Australian excellence. In case you didn't realise the difference. I guess you consider Nom du Jeu Australian too then? Princess Coup maybe?
Do you actually have anything more to do with horses than punt? Just curious ...
well doesnt that make the feats of lonhro and sunline more impressive.. considering the majority of australia's races are over shorter distances... so its redundant calling makybe diva the greatest when theres no real class involved in the races she ran in over 2000m... australian racing has changed a lot since pharlap was running so to suggest to them theyre similar is redundant.
and lonhro's premier distance was not 2000m.. ur an idiot if u think that
Nope, because everyone knows the WFA Cox Plate is known for separating the Champions from the Pretenders.
Makybe won hers, Lonhro didn't.
Saying it makes their feats more impressive because they had more races to win is like saying "Clearly your a harder worker than him because his computer is broken and yours isnt". That is why we have the big ones, and the spring carnival will find out Sydney pretenders. He was a good horse - he is just not a champion. Hence why he is not a Hall of Famer.
its not even similar to that terrible analogy about a computer...
the majority of races in australia are short to middle distance.. and so there is a greater level of competition in these distances comparatively to longer distance races.
i dont think you follow where im going with this.. by no means am i saying lonhro is the be all end all of horses.. im just saying.. with the way australian racing is atm.. makybe diva is considerably outshone by pharlap and other icons.
In your little world of tall poppy syndrome. Many thousands would disagree. Thats why she is in the HoF and "other icons" are not.
In case you didn't notice, your personal opinion doesn't seem to count for much in the racing industry.
And as for the "Greater" competition. Don't suppose you noticed how whobegotyou and Samantha Miss just seem to be running into the exact same horses over and over? Greater competition until they reach elite level, where its just recycling the last race.
yes but many thousands would agree with my opinion that she is still not close to pharlap.
and i wouldnt be too sure about yourself with my opinion.. perhaps it is you who has little credit.
it doesnt matter.. the sport is completely subjective.. the fact that she won 3 mc's isolates her from any other horse in history.. but comparisons cant be drawn considerng the nature of horse racing and that it is constantly evolving.
They are 70 years apart. I am not that presumptuous. I could not tell you who would have won had they competed - but that does not instantly make her less of a champion.
But sadly people have to start realising that there is going to be things that happen now that will challenge the long held historical view. I think the true irony is in the 1930s she would have been regarded as a champion. Not everything today is "Rubbish" by comparison.
I'v got nothing against Lonhro, to this day he is still one of my all time favourite race horses, but he may have won more races than Makybe but Makybe won bigger races, the higher stakes ones. She won Cox Plates, Caulfiend Cups and 3 Melbourne Cups along with many other Group One Races. Already, just considering those few, there are atleast 5 of her wins... thats a third of her won races and they are australias biggest races. Also, Lonhro was a sprint horse and competition is dif then.
nah she never won the caulfield.. came close but elvstroem nudged her out of it..
and im not saying shes not a good horse and that lonhro is an undisputed legend.. what im saying is.. australia's next champion racehorse wont be a stayer like makybe simply because australia's racing industry is focused on the sprinting-middle distance races as opposed to classic to long distance races.
I love both Makybe and Lonhro... but Lonhro was a sprinter and makybe a stayer. Makybe was beaten by Lonhro twice because she was not suited to short distance races and Lonhro was. There is different competition in both and therefor they can not really be compared to eachother evenly.
She is the greatest of all time...History shows it and to all the critics it was simulated against the best and she still won...Smashed Phar Lap and Kingston Town.
Funny how both Australia's most famous racehorses were born and bred in other countries! haha.
Go the Diva!

However, compared to Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, and the like, our love for him surpassed his Timeform rating!!!
snogand 2 years ago
Does anyone know the wonderful song? It complimented her so well.
Timeform ratings are not the true measure of a champion. Ultimately that's decided by the depth of people that give their heart. Here in the USA John Henry wasn't much of a champion -- but he was a champions champion. in the hearts and minds of people.
The record speaks for itself. Diva showed up on the biggest days for her biggest races. You have to love the girl!! Long live Diva and Sunline in memory.

TheHorseGames 2 years ago
wow! we dont have horses like bobby any more... :'(
XxBrokenBackRiderxX 2 years ago
His time would have been: 3:26.59 compared to the 2 mile race where he ran 3:27.75.
So I did the calculations again: 206.59 ÷ 62.6 X 55 = 3:01.51. My previous comment calculation was 3:02.53.
So Bobby would of beaten Diva but around eight seconds.
91cowgirl 2 years ago
In regards to my previous comment, I thought I'd make the calculation a bit more accurate.
Phar Lap ran the 1930 Melbourne Cup as a 2 mile race (3218m) whereas now it has been converted to the metric system (3200m).
Therefore, I divided Phar Lap's time in SECONDS by 3218 and multiplied it by 3200 which would have equaled his time if he had run a metric Melbourne Cup.
91cowgirl 2 years ago
Second
Through my calculations, I have taken into consideration the weight each horse was carrying in their fastest Melbourne Cup.
1930: Phar Lap, 62.6kg, 3:27.75
2005: Makybe Diva, 58kg, 3:19.79
PHAR LAP: 207.75 seconds ÷ 62.6 X 55 = 3:02.53
MAKYBE DIVA: 199.79 seconds ÷ 58 X 55 = 3:09.46
Therefore Pharlap would of been a faster horse. If Pharlap was born in this day and age he would of been evan faster with all our techincal equipment
91cowgirl 2 years ago
@91cowgirl that's some calculating right there! I never woulda been able to work that out, but that's pretty smart really! Would have been a good match race to have seen if it had ever been possible
stickybeak4eva 1 year ago
i am going to start adnd ned the who is faster Pharlap or Makybe Diva first of all...
Makybe Diva had 15 wins for 36 starts in her career - 42%
Phar Lap had 37 wins for 51 starts in his career - 73%
91cowgirl 2 years ago
Have you noticed that both of Australia's best racehorses of all time (Phar Lap and Makybe Diva) were bred in other countries? Phar Lap in New Zealand and the Diva in England. Doesn't make them any less champions though.
purplepinto 2 years ago
actually it makes a world of difference (not with pharlap but with diva)
dnt get me wrong, she was an amazing mare but she was bred to run long distances which europe still focuses on to a FAR higher degree than australia
so a mare born and bred to contest europes greatest races which are all staying contests gets sent to australia to race against sprinter/milers over 3200m
pharlap was different. australia was still a very open ended racing scene 80 years ago with emphasis on distance.

Maybe you should google "A Ferrari of a Thoroughbred" by the legendary Bill Whittaker.
While I may be just another bum on the net, Bill Whittaker was one of the most respected racing journos ever to grace the world. He didn't believe Lonhro was over rated.

Great tribute & music fits perfectly!
Jim Pike also never once had to whip Phar Lap to victory; I think he did it for the love of galloping & the adoring crowds!
bellaserene 3 years ago
Some horses are just made to run :) But yeh, i agree, there's no saying how he would have gone compared to makybe. The only way would be for them to BOTH be alive (well.. obviously lol) and give them the same weight ratio to their own weight to even see who was better... it would have been the match race of the century!!
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
Makybe Diva has proven to be faster than Phar Lap, which would make her one of the fastest horses in the world!
Diva wasnt forced or pushed to win, she wanted to win. She loved to run, you can see it in her eyes, she has a heart for this.
CrazyPonyGoMoo 3 years ago
:) It's true that she was never pushed. I mean, you just have to watch the videos of her racing and you can see that the whip was never actually touched against her flanks or shoulders, therefore she was never hit with the whip, and Glen always stopped with the whip before they reached the finish... leaving it up to Makybe to finish the race however hard she wanted to :) She was a great horse!
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
Yeh... just think tho... in years to come people will be saying 'Wish I'd been alive to see the Diva' and we'll be the lucky ones who get to say we did :) maybe not in REAL real life, but we went along the journey with her :)

There is no comparison for legends so pls stop comparing.Everyone has their own liking but that don't make the legends become nothing.
Pharlap is the most remembered horse in australia and is great if not inmortal.
Makybe diva for me is the greatest mare ever in this world. If anyone think she is not than make a horse win three melbourne cup again then i will believe it
FORESTDONS 3 years ago
I agree that the horses shouldn't be compared. They are all legends in their own way. Lonhro mastered the sprint. Pharlap gave people hope during the Depression. Makybe did wat people said no horse could. and so many other horses have done similar. But just because some won more than others doesn't mean they should be considered any less. They are all champions and all deserve to be honored in such a way. Each horse means something important to SOMEONE.

makybediva1985 3 years ago
Great work! Really well put together.
And so would have The Diva.
reichman73 3 years ago
thanks :)
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
No offence, but Makybe Diva was a good horse, a legend, but not a real champion... She only scored about 15 wins or something, and when you look at it, the real champions like Kingston Town earned 30 wins, double her amount of wins. But she is still a beautiful horse and did end her career well
mollatoff 3 years ago
Yer thats true, but its not quantity but quality! she ight not have won as many, but she won the ones that count!
kingsfred123 3 years ago
very true
makybediva1985 3 years ago
I can see your point, but Makybe wasn't entered in many small races. The races she won were the big ones, against the big guns. I thought people entered horses in small races and slowly worked their way up, but after working in the industry for a while I found out that it depends on the horse's talent. Makybe moved up to the big races quickly because she was so good. She won 3 melbourne cups, which no horse has never done and probably won't do for some time.
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
it was feat that only a mare could achieve to be honest due to handicapping.. she was an awesome horse but i still feel that a few horses (lonhro, northerly and sunline) would have put paid to her upto 2000m.. beyond 2000m she was unquestioned
nice video btw.. awesome music
Tbezz24 3 years ago
That would be because she is a Stayer - and excluding Northerly - they are middle distance horses. This is an actual distinction in racing that is made. Thats why Lonhro and Sunline never challenged the Melbourne Cup - because they were not in the same league when it comes to distance.
Redundant argument that can easily be countered with "Well over 2000 she would have creamed them! SO NER"
Then again, she has a win in the cox plate from one try. Lonhro failed... twice. Lonhro was overrated.
aylyese 3 years ago
pfft.. ur one of those typical awald people who sees a good horse and the rest suck in comparison.. open ur eyes.. watch makybe diva in the australia cup lonhro was in... she went backwards at flemington.. her favourite track
Tbezz24 3 years ago
Once again - Makybe was a stayer. Profound difference you need to look up.
Comparing the two is redundant.
Winning strike rate is equally so when they don't win the big race for their distance. Race him in Bathurst instead and its 100%. Don't mean a thing. Makybe got 3 wins from 3 starts at HER Premier G1 distance race.
Lonhro got 2 failures for 2 starts at his.
And if you call striking interference (protested) 'going backwards', then yes, I guess she did.
aylyese 3 years ago
Yes but that was early on in Makybe's career as a race horse whereas Lonhro was more mature by then. Also, Lonhro was a sprint horse and Makybe a stayer, therefore wen they raced together at least one of them (in this case Makybe as she was just starting out) was not in their suited field.
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
Have you ever heard of Wakeful ? She ran 2nd in her only Melbourne Cup but I'd rate her effort above anything that Makybe Diva ever done.
Carrying 63.5 Wakeful was beaten a length to Lord Cardigan who carried 41.5kgs. THAT'S 22 KGS to a horse that won the Sydney Cup six months later with 56.5kgs.
You talk about stayers and sprinters yet Wakeful won the Oakleigh Plate Newmarket sprint double whilst also winning majors over 4800m !
Makybe Diva made her name against poor opposition.
blackmourning11 2 years ago
I didn't want to go negative but your ignorance got the better of me.
To declare Lonhro over rated whilst rating Makybe Diva up with the best is insane. I wont have enough space to belt out the multitude of FACTS so I'll keep it simple.
Lonhro had 11 G1's and 10 G2's among his 26 wins with a strike rate of 74%. Only three horses in OZ history done better (Gloaming, Ajax, Carbine) which is amazing considering every start bar two was at stakes level.
He raced against top class opposition
blackmourning11 2 years ago
Now Makybe Diva was a good stayer but the simple fact is that she finished her career with 15 wins to 21 losses.
The suggestion that she is great because she won three Melbourne Cups is flawed. Australia breeds sprinter/milers so for a horse like Lonhro to win 75% of his races against horses like Tie The Knot, Shogun Lodge, Elvstroem, Sunline, Grand Armee, Mummify, Defier, Private Steer, Clangalang etc speaks volumes.
Makybe Diva didn't have to carry huge weight against true stayers.
blackmourning11 2 years ago
i agree with you.. lonhro was much better upto the crossover into staying and as a racehorse as a whole
he lost to northerly once for the record to whoever that was and beat 3 group 1 internationals.. 2 doncaster handicap winners, ajc derby winners .. tie the knot speaks for himself and shogun lodge would have beaten diva upto 2000m in my opinion.
i just think diva was overly embraced in a time when australia had lost its racehorses and needed one to state itself.
Tbezz24 2 years ago
in a nutshell - TF ratings
KT = 137
Manikato = 135
Sunline & Northerly = 129
Lonhro = 128
Diva = 125
you may be blind. but the world aint
Tbezz24 2 years ago
I don't agree with that statement. "The Diva was overly embraced in a time when Australia had lost it's racehorses".
Next time when you make a statement, or in your case, an opinion, do so with one that doesn't SUCK in all ways possible.
Just because she didn't have greatness bestowed upon her, she earn't he greatness. And for that, she will be remembered for her greatness. You and others, stop putting a champion down.
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
thats also your opinion and for the record. opinions can't suck.. just misguided and i don't believe it was wrong at all.
australia has had some champions such as kt and tulloch.. but makybe diva isnt near them. she won one race 3x.. stripping a race down... a race is a race.
horse wouldnt care about winning a melbourne cup or a trial at cranbourne. its the same to them
Tbezz24 2 years ago
Go be a pessimist on another page, not one trying to remember a LEGEND!
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
First, the reason Lonhro didn't run in the Melbourne Cup was because he wasn't trained to stay. This is because there's a lack of staying races at WFA in OZ. Being a stallion, Lonhro's connections wanted to focus on the shorter events for commercial reasons. Winning the Melbourne Cup does nothing for an entires value.
Finally, the majority of the world's premier races are at 2000m to 2400m. Lonhro met Makybe Diva once at 2000m and kicked her head in. She was 2nd up while he was 3rd up.
blackmourning11 2 years ago
Seriously, im going to kick YOUR head in if you say one more god damn thing about who has beaten Makybe Diva! It's a page to remember a legend. And yes, that's what she was so fuck up and go be a pessimist somewhere else!!!
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
Name one sport where you can lose more than win and be declared a "CHAMPION"
The problem is that by suggesting Makybe Diva the greatest is disrespectful to those champions that have come before her.
Consider Sunline, a winner of 13G1's in an era of champions. She claimed the scalps of Sky Heights, Intergaze, Shogun Lodge, Testa Rossa, Ethereal, Defier, Tie The Knot, Universal Prince, Adam, Redoute's Choice not to mention Jim And Tonic + Fairy King Prawn in Hong Kong !
blackmourning11 2 years ago
I'll give you one, HORSE RACING.
Now I'm sorry that you cannot comprehend this, but don't come on this page and ruin an excellent tribute.
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
Oh and one more thing, I don't give a shit about what comes out of you pessimist brain. Try getting some optomism and embracing a racehorse that a nation stopped for 3 fucking times. Shove it up you arse, I have nothing more to say to you because if you can't be optomistic about the Diva, then chanel your dismal thoughts into some other video because I don't want to hear another damn word about who beat Makybe Diva or who was better than her. Get a real hobby rather than arguing 24/7 on youtube!
howzathumdinger 2 years ago
yes but Sunline did not win the Melbounre Cup did she? I far as I know she never ran
TheHorseGames 2 years ago
@blackmourning11 Depending on your definition of 'lose' there could be any number of sports where you could lose more than you win and be considered a champion. Golf would be one, just for starters. And how many tennis players win more than 50% of the Grand Slams they contest? It is sad that there are so many Diva-haters out there, who cannot deal with the fact that she did something that had never been done before, and won a race three times that most struggle to win ever once.

Champs win more than lose.
blackmourning11 2 years ago
Dude...

But don't let facts stand in the way of your delusion.
aylyese 3 years ago
Lee Freedman stated that if the track was to firm she would not run and that's a fact. Add this to the fact that she was not handicapped correctly and what transpired was criminal.
How does a horse only go up 3kgs (from 55kgs to 58kgs) for winning Mel.Cup, Australian Cup, BMW Stakes and Cox Plate?
As for the track being "DEAD" Bullshit.
The official line was that the track was dead but it was closer to slow. Everything was done to help M.Diva as she was the VRC's promotional tool.

When a champion becomes a Legend

I love this movie sticky awesome footage and awesome music. That 3rd Melbourne Cup will always stick with me. Critics said she couldn't win and wouldn't win. Carrying 58.5kg from barrier 14 I think it was a big task but she did it and did it in style.
makybediva1985 3 years ago
she sure did :) I admire her efforts. I bet she has a big heart too, like pharlap did :P wouldnt suprise me! im glad u enjoyed the movie :)

She has proven it before and would prove it again.

Not to hard for both and one and felmington in Melbourne both over 3200m...I reakon she would smash Curlin.
makybediva1985 3 years ago
just going to put it out there... a 3200m match race could not happen
america stopped match races after ruffian vs foolish pleasure as they are to dangerous.. let alone a 2mile one.
Tbezz24 3 years ago
yeah i know they stopped it after ruffian broke her leg...she was a true champion...maybe even a legend like the great mare Makybe was...she was never beaten...even foolish pleasure didn't beat her...She was in front when she broke down...She was never behind...Ruffian was a super horse and Makybe was a true legend.
makybediva1985 3 years ago
im sorry but i dont hold makybe diva in the same class as ruffian.. only 2 other horses i compare ruffian with.. dubai millenium and dancing brave
but none of them are australian.. in terms of australia.. lonhro sunline are my horses
Tbezz24 3 years ago
Sunline was Kiwi, and in terms of Australian Champions, Lonhro would not be very high on the list. For that period Northerly was the champ until he became shinny. Lonrho was good, but he was always bested when it counted. Even Defier got the better of him twice.
Of this era, Makybe Diva stands alone. She rose to every challenge. They laid her in the cox plate and she won. They were laying her for the 05 cup and she won. She answered her critics twice already. Credit where its due, huh?
aylyese 3 years ago
and makybe diva was from europe bud..
hence why she could stay.
and northerly was a gelding.. how much easier would it be to run a race without considering jumping the mare in front of you... hmm
lonhro.. won 31/35...
makybe diva.. won 15/36
same amount of starts... lonhro won twice as many races.
im not questioning diva 2000m+.. i followed her after her queen elizabeth stakes win when she was 3 so i picked her for her first melbourne cup.
lonhro got the better of diva... more than once.
Tbezz24 3 years ago
PS: The reason Sunline is a Kiwi is coz thats where she was trained by a Kiwi trainer. Makybe was trained in Australia which like Phar Lap makes her the product of Australian excellence. In case you didn't realise the difference. I guess you consider Nom du Jeu Australian too then? Princess Coup maybe?
Do you actually have anything more to do with horses than punt? Just curious ...
aylyese 3 years ago
its irrelevant where she was trained.. her breeding set her up for longer distances
and no.. im not a punter. i rarely rarely bet.
but im very involved in the industry kind of
Tbezz24 3 years ago
well doesnt that make the feats of lonhro and sunline more impressive.. considering the majority of australia's races are over shorter distances... so its redundant calling makybe diva the greatest when theres no real class involved in the races she ran in over 2000m... australian racing has changed a lot since pharlap was running so to suggest to them theyre similar is redundant.
and lonhro's premier distance was not 2000m.. ur an idiot if u think that
Tbezz24 3 years ago
Nope, because everyone knows the WFA Cox Plate is known for separating the Champions from the Pretenders.
Makybe won hers, Lonhro didn't.
Saying it makes their feats more impressive because they had more races to win is like saying "Clearly your a harder worker than him because his computer is broken and yours isnt". That is why we have the big ones, and the spring carnival will find out Sydney pretenders. He was a good horse - he is just not a champion. Hence why he is not a Hall of Famer.
aylyese 3 years ago
its not even similar to that terrible analogy about a computer...
the majority of races in australia are short to middle distance.. and so there is a greater level of competition in these distances comparatively to longer distance races.
i dont think you follow where im going with this.. by no means am i saying lonhro is the be all end all of horses.. im just saying.. with the way australian racing is atm.. makybe diva is considerably outshone by pharlap and other icons.
Tbezz24 3 years ago
In your little world of tall poppy syndrome. Many thousands would disagree. Thats why she is in the HoF and "other icons" are not.
In case you didn't notice, your personal opinion doesn't seem to count for much in the racing industry.
And as for the "Greater" competition. Don't suppose you noticed how whobegotyou and Samantha Miss just seem to be running into the exact same horses over and over? Greater competition until they reach elite level, where its just recycling the last race.
aylyese 3 years ago
yes but many thousands would agree with my opinion that she is still not close to pharlap.
and i wouldnt be too sure about yourself with my opinion.. perhaps it is you who has little credit.
it doesnt matter.. the sport is completely subjective.. the fact that she won 3 mc's isolates her from any other horse in history.. but comparisons cant be drawn considerng the nature of horse racing and that it is constantly evolving.
Tbezz24 3 years ago
When did I compare her to Phar Lap?

Also, Lonhro was a sprint horse and competition is dif then.
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
nah she never won the caulfield.. came close but elvstroem nudged her out of it..
and im not saying shes not a good horse and that lonhro is an undisputed legend.. what im saying is.. australia's next champion racehorse wont be a stayer like makybe simply because australia's racing industry is focused on the sprinting-middle distance races as opposed to classic to long distance races.
Tbezz24 3 years ago
Yes but...
I love both Makybe and Lonhro... but Lonhro was a sprinter and makybe a stayer. Makybe was beaten by Lonhro twice because she was not suited to short distance races and Lonhro was. There is different competition in both and therefor they can not really be compared to eachother evenly.
stickybeak4eva 3 years ago
She is the greatest of all time...History shows it and to all the critics it was simulated against the best and she still won...Smashed Phar Lap and Kingston Town.
