I think you trigger it by activating the spike wall in the first screen before going up to the apple tree screen. Something in the coding sends that wall flying towards you in addition to the one from above.

I didn't know it was possible to do that either until I tried it. Once I found out you can do that, I just kept going and discovered other tricks like getting stuck in Link and riding that bird. Good times.
