To blame the mass murder committed by the despots of the 20th century (Mao, Stalin, Pot) on atheism is about as absurd as blaming the mass murder committed by the Abrahamic religions on theism.
You'd think an erudite man such as Mr. Aikman would know better. This man is purposely being intellectually dishonest and is clearly nothing but a shill for the Christian faith.
Did he say that he hopes his book will "Give Christians a reason to be proud of the veracity of what they believe."
LMAO.....In 2,000 yrs not a single Christian or denomination has been able to produce truly veracious evidence to justify the legitimacy of their belief system!
I swear there is nothing more annoying and sad than an intellectual, like Mr. Aikman, who is so desperate to defend Christianity that they say asinine things!
Shall I start with the simple and argue to the convoluted first, or vice versa..
Science is the child of Philosophy, and will ever be so.
As such, there is an underlying philosophy of science behind every approach to scientific inquiry. A paradigm, in other words; a set of glasses coloring one's perceptions of raw data.
Materialism is a Philosophy of science which works for some.
It has always, currently does, and ever will hobble all who adhere to it.
Fallacy #5) The works of Harris et. al. represent an intemperate attack on religion. Is there any criticism of religion, no matter how carefully worded, that the religious would not consider an intemperate attack? One thing all religions have in common is that they hold their doctrines and dogmas to be sacred, meaning that they are never to be questioned (studied and interpreted perhaps, but never questioned). How can something held to be sacred be questioned without being seen as an attack?
Fallacy #4) A disbeliever in religion must necessarily be hostile toward religion and must oppose religious freedom. Again, nonsense. In many European countries citizens are perfectly free to believe and practice as they see fit. In some of these countries the religious institutions are even openly supported by the government. Yet these countries have some of the highest rates of unbelief in the world. Skepticism toward religion is not synonymous with hostility toward religion.
Fallacy #3) The debate is one between belief and non-belief. Incorrect. Sam Harris states not just once but several times that he is not advocating mere unbelief, but a general attitude of skepticism and empiricism, of demanding that all claims be justified with supporting evidence. There were several tyrannical atheist regimes, yes, but as Harris said no society ever suffered because its people became too reasonable or too desirous of evidence in support of their beliefs.
Fallacy #2) The atheistic tyrants were worse than the religious tyrants. Perhaps this is an arguable point, but bear in mind that Stalin and Mao had access to 20th century weaponry. If every crusader and inquisitor and tyrant who killed in the name of god had access to modern technology would you still be willing to bet that the atheists would have a higher body count?
Fallacy #1) Argumentum ad Consequentiam - When people don't believe in god they do bad things, therefore their is a god. Nonsense. Even if every hideous tyrant in history was an atheist and killed in the name of atheism it wouldn't constitute one shred of evidence that god is real. Even if it could be established that religious belief is universally and highly desirable, it doesn't prove that god is real.
Right, so this guy has such a dim view of humanity that he thinks they should all believe in a god to keep them from misbehaving... pretty poor reasoning to argue for the existence of something.
Atheists don't endorse serial killers. The serial killers this idiot David aikman are talking about could easily have been religious believers.
He is saying religion makes people more virtuous and angelic, but atheism makes people killers and immoral. Definition of morality provided by religion is arbitrary, and one does not need morality or lessons from religion.
Like some have pointed out before me, nations with a high number of atheist inhabitants seem to do better on every level. I happen to live in such a nation. Even though my country has a state religion, and most children are baptised as part of our tradition, people here seem to not care about religion or God.
Those who are religious are respected, treated as equals, and also subject to much curiosity. But attempts to bring religion into the school system and politics are never accepted.
Hey mumbo-jumbo, smarty-pants man! read this and hopefully, you're learn something...
All men are capable of evil. However, the major difference between theists and nonbelievers is that theists DON'T take responsibility for their actions claiming that "they're DOING GAWDS WORK!". Where as, atheists take responsibility for their OWN ACTIONS... GOT IT??
Also the greatest crime of them all, the Dark Ages, was committed by religion. The Black Death was only able to spread because of the lost of technology and things like sanitation lost because of the Dark Ages.
I love how pretty much every "argument" this piece of shit retard makes is destroyed by just looking at countries like Norway, Japan, and other countries with large agnostic and atheist populations.
Tell me how come the USA has such an high murder rate and countries I've said before do not?
Stalin and all the other atheist mass murders are the same type of religious people that did the same mass murders before them.
They did because of dogma, which is all that religion is.
Once again they did NOT do it in the name of atheism. And they certainly did not believe they were going to an heaven for all eternity after they died.
Bigotted nonsense. I may as well blaim my religious friends for the inquisition. Stalin's regime may have been atheistic but it was primarily based on a marxist ideology.
Not a single atheist I know wants to take away religious freedom. The majority of western europe is atheistic or non-religious. It is also the most civislised region on the planet. Keep your bigotry to yourself you nutter!
what BS. @ 1 min, Aikman does NOT get it when he trots out the tired old debunked assertion that "20th century atheist regimes have done more evil...." Big problem with that argument: evil perpetrated by such regimes was NOT done in the name of atheism, BUT the evil done during the Inquisition and Crusades, et.al., WAS DONE in the name of Christianity! He is sickening.
Ppl just need to leave the shit alone. Religious people claim god has to be experienced personally...buddhists say the same about enlightenment...hippies say the same about lsd...live and let live and stop trying to reduce everything to a labaratory. Let people have their own goddamn opinions. Stop labeling stuff "delusional". it's just a more intelligent sounding way to call someone else an idiot...stop calling each other names like children.
Well with the exception of the soviet union, as this crazy man happily illustrates, atheists never try and force their beliefs on others. Religious people however do this constantly. Voting against gay marriage, stem cell research and abortion in the USA (for example). Not to mention if you're born in the islamic world, you'll often be murdered for trying to leave the religion. It's sad but 'just leaving people to their beliefs' just doesn't work anymore!
Does this guy really think that all Athiests want to create a tyrannical regime? What a fucking tool. The evil is not in Atheism, it's in fucking powerful regimes, whether secular or not. Destroy power put in the hands of the few, educate the masses, and you've solved the problem.
stalin became a god in the place he reigned. did he really say that atheism or anti-theism causes more wrong doings then all of the religious wars? this man is a shameless BIGOT, pretty much like ALL apologists, disgusting
Don't you just love it - Bringing up issues of Mao and Stalin as examples of atheist regime? When did either of them say they were being their strange ways "in the name of Atheism"???
Atheism is not anti-theism. There is a huge difference.
Ethically, Atheists are JUST as moral/ethical as Christians or people of other theologies, whether they be theistic or non-theistic - yes, there are non-theistic religions!
I've read his book, absolute nonsense. First of all, theists make a (stupid) claim and cannot back it up. Atheists challenge the foundation of that claim and theists say atheists are evil. Com'on! When the atombomb and are mass destruction weapons were invented in the twelfth century religion would be responsible for ten times the amound of deaths that occured in the 20th century (providing there were as many people then). You cannot harm in the name of atheism, because it's neutral, nothing!
Read Society Without God, the book focuses on countries such and Denmark and Sweden twhere nearly all citizens 90% or more are atheists. These countries are very civil and rate very low on scales of violence. This argument about Russia and China is misguided, it is not atheism that is the problem it is the adopted political system. Communism has to take way more responsibility for problems as atheism is just not that big of an idea to run countries. Anti theist, that's it, the rest is open.
yes well, religious people dont look at all sides of coins...they nit pick out what they want to talk about and dismiss stats of the big picture, its called elitism
Anti-Theists really have a bone to pick with Christianity and sadly their hatred for God and His people solely rely in how they've let others shape their view of God and not their own minds and the Lord, Himself.
To me, this is the same as when Christians are told we blindly follow God. Not to mention Anti-Theism has become a religion in many ways.
McMonster 65:"An anti theist is someone who thinks that religion has been a negative force in our species history"
Well if that were true I think they would be more disturbed with anti theist , Since anti theist regimes have Killed over 100 million this past century.
For an anti theist to bring up negative forces in our species history is more than ironic it is an absolute absurdity.
I expect your hate will become evident in your upcoming comments.
That so weird, I just visited Rutgers Journal of Law and religion online, and in their entire database they only have one article that mentions Hitler.
you've been told I'll tell you again. I have many many friends all over the world. many are christians- all of those are better christians than you and better people than you.
one of my dearest christian friends who had been very sick for 2 years died yesterday. his devout christian wife phoned me within hours. we remembered the many times I sat at his bed, the music I played for him, the humour we shared- our friendship. the believe differently to me and I to them. this is how adults behave.
read my last message and weep. weep at the small minded degenerate you've become. weep at your hopeless failure to deal in an honourable way with adults who think differently to you. weep that it might have been different
please don't respond. I, and many others, find you utterly disgusting. you have nothing but hate and lies between your ears and I'm not interested in engaging with it.
in short- fuck off. fuck off now and fuck off for good.
you have to be the most loathsome individual I've ever had the misfortune to encounter
read it again. I harbour no hatred for christians and have many such friends- better people on any level than you. As of yesterday I have one less christian friend- the friendship was based on mutual respect which extends to his deeply religious family last visit, aware of my nonbelief, I was invited to sit at the bedside while the family prayed with my dying pal and his pastor. this I did.
I agree, it is Anti-Theist. Atheists simply don't believe in God and go on their way just as someone who doesn't believe in Santa Claus (I use that because God is often referred to as Christians' Santa Claus) doesn't make books and sites about NOT believing in him.
There are bad people in every group in the world, even people we deem most God-like such as preists. Anti-Theist are very angry people and it's clearly a problem they have with other human beings, not with God.
You are right McMonster. It is time we christians differentiate between atheism and anti-theism. Most atheist believe people like Dawkins,Harris, and you, Private First Class McMonster are dweebs.
Anti theist are the ones that have killedd hundreds of millions this past century. It was their anti theism that has caused and is causing them to do so.
yup. your biggest concern is a seething hatred of billions of decent men a women who don't share your beliefs. in this you are far more similar to pol pot and stalin than I- since I am quite capable of having grown up discourse with those who belive differently to me.
stalin and pol pot had much in common- a liking for whisky being one- another being their ultra religious upbringing. both studied in their respective priesthoods.
This is the best example of projection I have ever seen. Known by its school yard equivalent as "I know you are but what am I" Disbelief a delusion? That the best argument you can come up with for being unable to provide a shred of evidence for any gods? Atheism is not a positive belief. It's a rejection of the claim that gods exist. Thats all. Anything else you project onto it is of your own making. Stalin also disbelieved in Santa Claus. Does that mean his crimes are rooted in Asanta Clausism?
So what? Muslims tear down churches too. And Hindus; even some Buddhists. What was wrong with communist Russia was COMMUNISM and a state that acted in exactly the same ways the religion has acted. Not atheism or secularity. You can't act from a disbelief. You don't act on your disbelief in Santa Claus or the Easter bunny. Aikman's pet theory here is based on a complete misunderstanding of what atheism is. He clearly did not understand what the so called four horsemen were writing about.
"Dawkins and Harris are no different than all the other anti theist that have slaughtered
mothers, daughters, fathers and sons."
That is the most egregious nonsense I have ever read. Calling religion nonsense is neither bigoted nor hateful. Its asking the claims of god to be substantiated. Something no theist has ever or can ever do. Likening Dawkins and Harris to murderers just making you look like a radical fool who is willing to lie in order to support a bronze-age superstitious belief.
totally and utterly. for someone who bleats about "hatred" at the merest critisism of your absurd beliefs you seem to be hard wired with more that you share of pure hate for those who don't share those weird beliefs.
If it is not McMonster,a mere private in the anti theist movement.
I will share in the merest criticisms of christianity and I do believe it is profitable to do so. I dont hate athiest but I do pity anti theist. They espouse education but it is amply evident theirs are tainted.
Little victims who had not the brain power to detect the dillusion, the smoke that has turned them into imbecilles.
I couldn't really give a flying fuck. I suppose you need something to do with your miserable life so have at it- bring on the pity.
what is it exactly that you pity? my beautiful family? the loving, fear-free relationship I have with my child? the delight in watching him grow and learn without a headfull of shite about burning in hell? do you pity my worldwide network of friends- many of them christains, and all of those better chritians than you? you sure it's pity?
Fear-free? Christians and atheists spank their children. If you discipline your kids at all, there is a certain fear associated with it.
People who use hell as a way to scare their children into believing in God are bad people, but most Christians do not do that. We all know kids eventually grow up anyway and have to reclaim their belief in God on their own because, just as we tell them not to steal or kill, they have to come into their own understanding of what they've been taught.
As for historical atrocities done by both those with unreasonable / immoral philosophies whether religious or otherwise, Harris rejects both in his books and presentations, as he rejects all forms of dogma (or thinking that is not checked by reason), not just religion.
To attack people's reasons for seeing life as meaningful, the very terms by which they understand everything that makes life worthwhile and their understanding of why morality is what it is, before offering them the comprehensive alternative is to do a disservice to both their audience and their message.
As a former Christian, I would compel the 4 horseman to focus first on helping people discovering an alternative understanding and approach to living a happy, meaningful, and ethical life that does not require faith to explain or motivate it. They in fact do this, but they should focus on this as a first and initial message.
Harris believes in Objective Morality and argues for it in his book as well as in his recent talk at Beyond Belief called This is Your Brain on Morality (it's on youtube - real good - definitely worth a look.)
I agree with most of what Aikman says here, but not he's arguments against Atheists. Then again, I don't believe in Atheism, sense it's defined by what it is NOT and not by what it IS. I'm a Humanist who believes in Objective Morality as Sam Harris does, but like Sam Harris, I reject the term "Atheist."
u cant blame us (the atheists) for stalin. he didnt do those things in a front to god or specificly to religious people. meanwhile all the crusades and religious wars were allmdone in gods name and honor. so u see ur views are flawed mr. aikman

There is only one weak minded group who infiltrate all aspects of life and spew their hatred and misery.
That be you McMonster. I hope you dont mind if we dont share in your misery.
If you quit being so hatefull maybe 1 day even you will find a friend.
JAMRAND 3 years ago
you've been told I'll tell you again.
McMonster65 3 years ago
we? there is no "we" for you. you're on your own
read my last message and weep. weep at the small minded degenerate you've become. weep at your hopeless failure to deal in an honourable way with adults who think differently to you. weep that it might have been different
please don't respond. I, and many others, find you utterly disgusting. you have nothing but hate and lies between your ears and I'm not interested in engaging with it.
in short- fuck off. fuck off now and fuck off for good.
McMonster65 3 years ago
I am sure you are freightened that is why you rant and spew profanity all over you tube.
I hope you grow up.
anyone can see by your previous post that it was you who wanted to begin a fight.
I feel sorry for you McMonster.
Hope you quit hating yourself and think of yourself as a man.
JAMRAND 3 years ago
you have to be the most loathsome individual I've ever had the misfortune to encounter
read it again. I harbour no hatred for christians and have many such friends- better people on any level than you. As of yesterday I have one less christian friend- the friendship was based on mutual respect which extends to his deeply religious family last visit, aware of my nonbelief, I was invited to sit at the bedside while the family prayed with my dying pal and his pastor. this I did.
now go away.

VeggieTrunks 3 years ago
this is such feeble rubbish.
atheists, hundreds of millions of them, simply lack a belief in the supernatural. did stalin kill in the pursuit of more evidence for god?
McMonster65 3 years ago
You are right McMonster. It is time we christians differentiate between atheism and anti-theism. Most atheist believe people like Dawkins,Harris, and you, Private First Class McMonster are dweebs.
Anti theist are the ones that have killedd hundreds of millions this past century. It was their anti theism that has caused and is causing them to do so.
Was stalin anti theist?
Was pol pot anti theist?
Is McMonster anti theist?
I presume you can see our concern.
Quit being a bigot!!!
JAMRAND 3 years ago
"I presume you can see our concern"
yup. your biggest concern is a seething hatred of billions of decent men a women who don't share your beliefs. in this you are far more similar to pol pot and stalin than I- since I am quite capable of having grown up discourse with those who belive differently to me.
stalin and pol pot had much in common- a liking for whisky being one- another being their ultra religious upbringing. both studied in their respective priesthoods.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
To attack atheist is a slippery slope.
But the attack is much more fruitfull when it is pointed in its proper direction.
Anti theisism is the problem and is just another vehicle for people filled with hate.
The bigotry of the 20th and 21st century.
Dawkins and Harris are no different than all the other anti theist that have slaughtered
mothers, daughters, fathers and sons.

You despicable man.
SethReturns 3 years ago 15
The lack of belief in a God has nothing to do with anti theism.
The majority of atheist think Harris, Dawkins and the like, are complete morons.
Since you feel it is your duty to call my beliefs a bronze age myth, then I will consider it my duty to call you a bigoted moronic turd.
Anti theisism ( in which you are one ) is no different than racist and biggots.
Dont hide in the shadows of atheism. You are weak of mind, thats why you choose to shout when you should discuss.
JAMRAND 3 years ago
"You despicable man"
totally and utterly. for someone who bleats about "hatred" at the merest critisism of your absurd beliefs you seem to be hard wired with more that you share of pure hate for those who don't share those weird beliefs.
McMonster65 3 years ago
If it is not McMonster,a mere private in the anti theist movement.
I will share in the merest criticisms of christianity and I do believe it is profitable to do so. I dont hate athiest but I do pity anti theist. They espouse education but it is amply evident theirs are tainted.
Little victims who had not the brain power to detect the dillusion, the smoke that has turned them into imbecilles.
A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE.
I DONT HATE YOU, I PITY YOU.
JAMRAND 3 years ago
"I PITY YOU"
I couldn't really give a flying fuck. I suppose you need something to do with your miserable life so have at it- bring on the pity.
what is it exactly that you pity? my beautiful family? the loving, fear-free relationship I have with my child? the delight in watching him grow and learn without a headfull of shite about burning in hell? do you pity my worldwide network of friends- many of them christains, and all of those better chritians than you? you sure it's pity?
poor sod..
McMonster65 3 years ago

@SethReturns YES!!!!! I agree with you whole heartedly on your statement on this video. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a Humanist who believes in Objective Morality as Sam Harris does, but like Sam Harris, I reject the term "Atheist."

u cant blame us (the atheists) for stalin. he didnt do those things in a front to god or specificly to religious people. meanwhile all the crusades and religious wars were allmdone in gods name and honor. so u see ur views are flawed mr. aikman
