Sounds like you're balancing off social interaction with social avoidance. I would not advocate integration into the tribe, your individuality may be compromised. That said, I have found that the effort required to interact is usually justified. Whether positive or negative, at least your experiences will have been interesting and personally enriching. You can learn a lot about yourself by examining others.
Personally I would rather play Populous than be part of the populace.
