@NCTarheel62 its a disgrace to the outlaws that defined country. if your song plays on pop and country stations or dont sing about the workin man and the simple life it aint worth putting their cd in front of the legends. they sang about life, hardship, good and bad women, corruption, and standing up for america. now they just slap a cowboy hat on them and call it country. its a shame
If anyone has the album of Vern Gosdin, You've Got Somebody, recorded in 1979, can you please post some songs from it. Some were "You've Got Somebody, I've Got Somebody", "Til I'm Over Getting Over You", "I Took It Like A Man, Cried Like A Baby"," All I Want And Need Forever", "Sarah's Eyes." Thanks for posting.
Thanks to ole Vern I was burning the candle at both ends at the Dallas pseudo "honky tonks", Bell Star, Diamond Jims and Cowboys. Boy, those were the days and Vern was definitely a big catalyst in the 80's and if I wasn't listening at the joints I had him on casette for the truck trips.
I went to a department at work where we could play CD's. I put Vern in and the guys went crazy. The youngins begged me to burn some good stuff. I put Buck, Vern, Merle, Marty etc. All the old masters and they love it. They are totally hooked and in awe of the old masters.
ATTENTION VG FANS: there are so many excellent live recordings of the late Vern Gosdin that were filmed for various television programs. We need to find and encourage a record label to release these historic recordings. These would make perfect live albums. It's unfair that Michael Jackson has dozens of official and unofficial live recordings, yet Vern is overlooked because his music is country.
love this ...My Mom was with us then ..we had sooooooo much fun...This one makes me think of my little sister a lot ..listening to her jukebox !!!! Miss mky Family !!!!!!
I just sang Vern's "Set 'Em Up Joe" over on jtyler5, so if you love country...as much as I do, you will like it. If you hate it, say so on the comments section...I've got the guts to take it! Of course, NOBODY sings LIKE Vern, which was also my brother's name! I plan to now do about four more of Vern's tunes, so come over and pay a visit now and then.
Anybody who wants to here country music like this today needs to go and get them a Jamey Johnson cd. He's is close as your gonna get to good music like this these days.
Anyone know where I can get a copy of "No One Calls From Vegas". I had it on an album, but can't find it anywhere now. If anyone can post it to YouTube, Id appreciate it a lot.
The younger generations are sick of the modern country garbage, which only represents a small market. The young people of today are referring back to the country legends and want to hear Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Charley Pride and Vern Gosdin. We're sick of the garbage Nashville is releasing, because it's not cool anymore, nor is it pleasing to the human ear. Garth Brooks and the hat acts killed the popularity of traditional country music like Vern Gosdin. Real country forever!
@hectorsalinasisback Makes sense to me, but then again I'm one of you. We have to remember it's a new generation, just like we were. They said Buck Owens & Charlie Pride ruined country music, because they're different than Hank, Sr., Ernest Tubb & Bob Wills. So I can't fault the kids today, they know what they like & the record companies know what sells & THAT's the bottom line. At least they're rooted in country & not listenin' to that rap crap or dopey rock stuff. Long live Vern & C & W !
Set 'em Joe, drink 'em down and holler for some more! Reminds me of the juke box in Hawgs and Heifers in NYC...had this song on it and there was some drunk Marines screaming at the top of thier voices to play it again!
But hey, when you grew up on gospel, country, and rock, all of those from 60's-90's.
And i say 90's because i was born in 96' So yeah, aint every little kid brain washedd ! This stuff ALWAYS gets play. That and garth brooks, Peter gabriel, and billy squier. Thank god my dad's born in 69' or i wouldn't ever know real music.
@canersikes You have to remember, Garth Brooks and the hat acts killed the popularity of traditional country music like Vern Gosdin. The hat acts played modern country, which is basically bad rock n roll. Sadly, country never healed from the damages caused by Garth. New country songs are either copies of 80s hair band power ballads or recycled bonehead southern rock songs. Modern country is white trash garbage. Vern Gosdin is REAL country.
well then im sure some of you guys are Jamey Johnson fans? Covering songs like this and writing other country songs that sound like good country not new stuff!
@kencenpn if you can't spell, you shouldn't start a sentence with the word 'Actualy' (sic). Even if it were an old song, copyright laws would still have applied, but it's not, it was recorded in 1988.
I used to have this tape in my car when I first started driving. While I listened to the whole album, it was this song I played over and over. While Vern was running aneedle through Walking The Floor, I was wearing out the tape on Set Em Up Joe! Went throught 3 tapes! It was always in the car.
I live in North Alabama and when I hear people talk about "country" music nowadays, I get so pissed that they have no idea about real music.....Muscle Shoals finest right here, "THE VOICE".......if you know about real music, you know about Muscle Shoals, Alabama!
Ol' Vern here is my best performer. I guess so much of his music was what I was raised up on and going into many texas bars could hear on that ol' juke box in the corner!
@crocks2871 hahhahahaahha thats awesome! you know your country music fella! jamey would of been 13 when this came song came so glad to here JJ has been in country music so long! smh!!
Buck Owens refers to track A-11 on a jukebox. K-13 is mentioned in Straight Tequila Night by John Anderson. And B-17 is mentioned in an Olivia Newton John song
Wouldn't the lyric then there's 124 sound better than B-24? Anyway, Vern hit #1 in Billboard, 7-23-88. God bless you, Vern. RIP, the Voice. Whoever heard of a jukebox selection of B-24?

The real ET didn't come out of outer space and land in Hollywood, the great one came out of Texas and landed in Nashville.A great tribute by a great entertainer.
@jabusenb Hey faggot, it was a joke I know rap sucks i hate it if u read the rest of my comment i clearly state "i know it burns but try" implying that rap sucks and if this was a rap song i would hate it but its not so i love it so please fuck off
Every record producer in Nashville today should have to listen to this song, then maybe they would start signing acts that actually play real country music.
@mrcrusherblackwell You have it right. There is a short list of true Country Music singers/writers now. Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Martina Mcbride just to name a few.
A true country classic-his music takes me to where everybody is smiling and happy regardless of whats really happening RIP Mr. Gosden thanks for your sharing!!!
It doesn't get much better.

This is a neat song. I noticed the phrasing pattern is not usual.
For example the first verse is like this (count 1 note to the bass guitar part):
1234567,1234567, 1234,1234,1234. Then 123 before the bridge starts.
Then the bridge is 1234, 1234, 1234567, 1234,1234.
And there is one extra count in the second verse (after the word 'floor'. compared to the first.
Don't usually analyze like this but I'm thinking of doing a cover version and it is certainly unusual phrase timing.
But good song.

The real ET didn't come out of outer space and land in Hollywood, the great one came out of Texas and landed in Nashville.A great tribute by a great entertainer.
