...All you younglings, with your World of Warcraft, may not realise this, but tabletop roleplaying games (played with rule books, pencils and character sheets, dice, miniatures, etc) were the precusor to computer roleplaying games. And Dungeons and Dragons, first released in 1974 as a supplement to Chainmail, is the game you have to thank for many of the fantasy games that followed.
Dave Arneson and Ernest Gary Gygax, may they both rest in peace at the great big GenCon in the sky!!!
...It is currently in its 4th edition, with a 5th edition in production and about to be playtested by the tabletop RPG community. 4th edition D&D divided a lot of people, due to its streamlined rules, its lack of backwards compatibility with 3.5 edition, being heavy on combat and light on roleplaying, etc. A lot of tabletop roleplaying gamers are now playing "Pathfinder", which is basically 3.75 edition of D&D under a different name and by a different publisher (Paizo).
Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game, played with rule books, polyhedral dice, character sheets, miniatures. It was first published in 1974 as a supplement to Chainmail (a medieval miniatures wargame). By the late 1970s, it became a game in its own right with the release of (Advanced) Dungeons and Dragons 1st edition. Dungeons and Dragons inspired other tabletop RPGs, Ian and Steve of "Games Workshop", and countless video games (without D&D, there may have been no WOW)...
Very awesome of you! Thanks for putting yourself out there and encouraging people to set the stereotypes aside and revealing D&D for what it is: a creative way to have a good time with your friends.
@chocolaterockz Subscribe to any (or all) of the following channels and look at their subscription lists. I've never played a roleplaying game before, ever. Neither has any of my friends. I think I know a bit about it but it sounds very confusing. Can someone help inform me of it? <3 THANKS
I think it is best to think of DnD being whatever you and your friends want it to be.
When I play it with my friends most of us use the app RPG Scribe. It's easier than paper (much less maths). Our DMs create adventures that work for our group. It's characters, inside jokes, personalities etc. (We were fighting a giant penguin god the other day). We pick and choose and develop our own rules and restrictions, as well as using some more "official" ones. And it is all awesome fun.
These Videos are bullshit.Put a pretty face on Screen talking about stuff she doesn't have a clue about and you've got a thousand horny nerds watching. It's genius, but don't fall for it.
Instead of a video about D&D, the gorilla in the corner of the gamestore, you should have made a video about Call of Cthulhu and basic roleplay system? Traveller? Pathfinder? Vampire The Requiem? Something which actually IS a pen & paper RPG? but you don't sound too bright
Maybe you should explain the difference between Dungeons & Dragons TODAY, compared to what a pen & paper RPG is? D&D -today- no longer requires pen & paper, they turned it into a miniatures game it is a cash cow, it is the gorilla in the corner of the room you have to explain to people what it is, why there are so many books about it etc... anyone getting into D&D today who want to get into the pen & paper hobby ought to find modern D&D to be extremely alienating and confusing.
The problem is finding other people who would be cool with Playing D&D with you. 'Cause I think it would be awesome but every time I bring it up with my girl friends they call it nerdy. *sigh* Ultimate sadness.
"Arneson" that is. Wikipedia: "In the 1960s, Gygax created an organization of wargaming clubs and founded the Gen Con gaming convention. In 1971, he helped develop Chainmail, a miniatures wargame based on medieval warfare. He co-founded the company Tactical Studies Rules (TSR, Inc.) with childhood friend Don Kaye in 1973. The following year, he and Dave Arneson created Dungeons & Dragons, which expanded on his work on Chainmail and included elements of the fantasy stories he loved as a child."
Why is it the nerdiest of the nerdy? Because it's the oldest of the old. I'm unsure of any precursor to D&D that would be considered a "Roll-playing" game. Gygax and Anreson sort of invented it. Which paved the way for the modern "first-person" shooter.
I have dice and everything and I'm all ready to go, I just need someone to help me get started, but I am such a sad nerd that I don't even have D&D playing friends.
Hm, I'm not sure whether I'd be interested in D&D. I don't actually play any pole-playing games or anything. Never really did WoW or Pokemon or anything. but I guess I don't have a console to play Pokemon on. I mostly just nerd out with like Mario and books and stuff.

@gwriterk Nerd; from Knurd spelled backwards - drunk... a Nerd is an anti-drunk or "square"...
Geek; a technical minded individual with no concern for social presentability or conformity...
Dork; a whale penis, something that Geeks and Nerds refer to each other as affectionately (see also; Dude, which is a camels dong, or dudes which is a camels vag - but also an urbanite individual or a friendly chap).

You frigin ruin everything with ur stupid hair ND ur hello YouTube which makes me want to punch you in the face ugh if you don't stop popping up everywhere bitch imma cut yo ass
I probably would like it, but I don't play it for the same reason I don't run raids in WoW ... I have no time. Getting together with other people on a scheduled, regular basis to play a game is difficult because of my work schedule. I play here and there when I get a spare moment, but that usually means I only have time to run a few quests or play some arena battles with my fiancee.
My D&D group has been together and have been playing for about 11 years now. We do other games too, like the Star Wars Saga Edition RPG and Pathfinder and we also play computer games together. Oh, and personally, I prefer the daylight.
My dad was going through some boxes in the garage & found his collection of hand painted (by him) figurines. Now, if only we could find the time to play!
Its probably because you yourself are doing the role playing instead of playing a video game. But I'm fine with it :P never played but my bf and another close friend play it.
I have had so much fun playing D&D. I love it. My friends and I don't have enough spare time to have a game that meets regularly but we have a ton of fun getting together every month or two months and just spend a afternoon/evening/night/early morning just battling some monsters, eating junk food, and having a great time just hanging out.
I love DnD night with my friends though due to Christmas being on Sunday (our game night) we won't be meeting up to slay the undead horde for at least a week.
D&D is amazing! I have a half elf Ranger that wields two hammers, and also has throwing knives!
I met some of my closest friends while playing this, and we ALWAYS have a fun time, especially during lunch break, when we pull out our nerf guns and have a nerf war.
if you don't know who to play with, then go to your local comic book store and ask if there is a group that meets up there. That's how I got into my group.
It's fun you mentioning this... as I am working on my first time DMing with an uber-steampunk influenced campaign. It's interesting because I was having a hard time getting people to play but when they heard it was steam-punk they were all like "Oh! That actually sounds really cool"
OMG!!! After years of wanting to play DnD I *finally* found a campaign and played my first game today!! It was fantastic :) What a coincidence that this video was made today....
I have ALWAYS wanted to play DnD, but have never been able to get together a group that would be okay enough with playing it. xD
My friends are wonderfully nerdy and even most of us are actors and play pretend for a living, but they won't play Dungeons and Dragons. Something is wrong with this picture.
I played D&D in High School. It is some of my favorite memories from that time of my life. It's basically group storytelling and is really amazing. It actually helped boost my self confidence when my character was able to save my friends from an angry troll. I found myself channeling the aspects of my character that I admired into my real life personality and became a better person from it.
Maybe it's considered the nerdiest, because so many nerds have to come together to play it. So the overall degree of nerdiness involved in this game is much higher than in other games, even so it is only added up.
I really want to try D and D. I like World of Warcraft and the card game Munchkin- I've heard D and D is a bit like both of those. I just need to convince my friends to play with me...
@eda1102 There are role playing games of numerous themes. Cyberpunk, steampunk,Espionge,Super Hero's, Sci-fi, Gothic Horror, StarWars, Starship troopers, Prime Directive, Buffy the vampire,Modern world, pretty much you name the theme and chances are there's a D&D like role playing game for it.
I love DnD! Well, me and my friends play a much looser version of it, without character sheets or a game board, but we still have a good time and go on marvelous adventures. :)
haha, I just played it a couple days ago for the first time and it was really fun. yay for being in marching band and having nerdy friends! (my other friends would NEVER play with me.) but my guy friend (who DM'ed for us)'s dad took pictures of all the girls playing because he was so amazed that there were girls in his house playing DnD.
D&D's not that big in the UK so it's really hard to get into. It's always seemed interesting though, so hopefully one day I'll have the chance to properly get into it!
5 of my friends and I started playing this summer, and we are all hooked. We played once a week for the entirety of the summer, and we are planning on playing a couple of games over winter break. We are ridiculous and all of our characters have weird traits, and our DM is amazing and creates these awesome quests that involve the other fantoms that we are into. Ah! I'm getting excited just thinking about it.
The biggest problem with d&d is the "with your friends" part. You need nerdy friends, I've played call of cthulhu once and that was cause our english teacher made us :)
It's considered nerdy because back in the 90's when people didn't have computers or Wii or Xbox and other things, this was kind of the only fun role playing game and as you can imagine pretty much only nerdy type people only played it, so now because of it's amazing track record it is considered very very nerdy.
@desertislanddream i played for a while with a few friends but it can be sooo difficult to find a time longer then like an hour where everyones schedules match up.
D&d is actually alot of fun, I had the same stigma as most people do but then I got a basic set of the game for free and now I wish I had more people to play it with :(
I want to do that, for my birthday... I;ve never played it... but I want to do that... I just... want to have people in my dorm room, and have us play it... all day. yep...
I HATE D&D! I had a boyfriend in college who played it and no matter what happened (or who got sick or hurt or anything) on Thursday night, you were not allowed to interupt D&D night.
Might I suggest everyone play 3.5e. 4e is a lot like World of Warcraft and a lot easier perse. There are also different versions of 3.5e. They change the rules a little so it's easier but still fairly difficult.
@sasukeichigo12 i was actually going to point out that as one of the first rpgs, it's not DnD that resembles other games, but them that resemble it. but then again, the newest editions have become more like the videogames that spun off the older pen and paper game.
and if this observation isn't indicative of the variety of nerds who play the game, i don't know what is.
yes some of us get just as obsessed and don't socialize out of game and some barely seem like nerds to the casual observer.
I kinda really want to learn how to play this with my friends now. :) You make it sound so fun, Kristina! I actually wanted to learn a while ago cause one of my other friends loves this game and she was making a character one day and it seemed really cool! Any websites you can go to to learn how to play?
:O I'm not aloooooneeee! :'D so good to see other women playing <3

My friend is really into it and she taught a group of my friends how to play. It's fun with friends! :)

Id like to think this video was in response to my comment, even though it probably wasn't haha :) my friend and I want to try Playing :)
FantasticBrina 2 months ago
Maybe it's considered the nerdiest, because so many nerds have to come together to play it. So the overall degree of nerdiness involved in this game is much higher than in other games, even so it is only added up.

Until this video, the only things I knew about D&D were based on Community.
vmaddict 2 months ago
I'm in like... 4 campaigns right now of D&D and similar games.
I didn't know it was considered the "nerdiest"... I feel slightly more nerdy now after watching this.

I've played D&D before. It's actually really fun! ^_^

I really want to try D and D. I like World of Warcraft and the card game Munchkin- I've heard D and D is a bit like both of those. I just need to convince my friends to play with me...

Community taught me what DnD is. c:
Actually if I were into fantasy, in general I'd be all over DnD I think
eda1102 2 months ago
@eda1102 There are role playing games of numerous themes. Cyberpunk, steampunk,Espionge,Super Hero's, Sci-fi, Gothic Horror, StarWars, Starship troopers, Prime Directive, Buffy the vampire,Modern world, pretty much you name the theme and chances are there's a D&D like role playing game for it.

I love DnD! Well, me and my friends play a much looser version of it, without character sheets or a game board, but we still have a good time and go on marvelous adventures. :)

The thing about board games is that you need enough people to play them, I've never had a group of friends that likes to play board games much.

haha, I just played it a couple days ago for the first time and it was really fun. yay for being in marching band and having nerdy friends!

Ah! I'm getting excited just thinking about it.
irrishpirrate 2 months ago
The biggest problem with d&d is the "with your friends" part. You need nerdy friends, I've played call of cthulhu once and that was cause our english teacher made us :)
andrineslife 2 months ago
@andrineslife
Same thing at my college. We had a Lovecraft tutorial. So yes. Call of Cthulu for credit is awesome.

It's considered nerdy because back in the 90's when people didn't have computers or Wii or Xbox and other things, this was kind of the only fun role playing game and as you can imagine pretty much only nerdy type people only played it, so now because of it's amazing track record it is considered very very nerdy.

@death2sequins WoW is based off of Dungeons & Dragons. WoW went off line the days that the creators of D&D died.

Might I suggest everyone play 3.5e. 4e is a lot like World of Warcraft and a lot easier perse. There are also different versions of 3.5e. They change the rules a little so it's easier but still fairly difficult.
sasukeichigo12 2 months ago
@sasukeichigo12 i was actually going to point out that as one of the first rpgs, it's not DnD that resembles other games, but them that resemble it. but then again, the newest editions have become more like the videogames that spun off the older pen and paper game.
and if this observation isn't indicative of the variety of nerds who play the game, i don't know what is.
yes some of us get just as obsessed and don't socialize out of game and some barely seem like nerds to the casual observer.
