  • One of the best written songs in about 10 years. Eerie, Angry, Perfect.

  • This is a love song for men. Sorry ladies !! Many of us men have been down this road !! You just can't understand this song if your not a man! Sorry !!

  • @rea5000 yup

  • @rea5000 Amen, dude... A fucking Men

  • As a frequent Letterman viewer he genuinely seemed to enjoy that.

  • If you were ever in love and lost, you know what this song means..

  • this is my all time favourite song by this amazing band x

  • CALDER QUARTET ~ CELEBRATED ARTISTS FROM: THE COLBURN CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC, CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE!!!

  • I have seen them live in Münster, they are fantastic and really nice to the audience, got their autogramm, just missed the drummer, he never gets noticed, like he said on their dvd...sorry...next time, love the voice of the leadsinger , pity they are not very well known in Germany and played on the radio........

  • @gugagtl they've been broadcasted on a bavarian radio show, 'twas B3 I guess...

  • Does anyone else get reminded of the girl from the breakfast club whenever you see the keyboardist/violinist?

  • The best band ever?..oh yeah you cant get better than that!!! Out of this world...

  • what guitar is the guitarist on the right using?

  • 8 people have never been in love.

  • Don't see Letterman that effusive about a song very often. I think he liked it.

  • Dave is so amped on them it's hilarious.

  • I love the airborne toxic event.

  • Everyone seems to think Mikel is the coolest, but I gotta say I think Steven Chen is my favorite.

  • lyrics in this blow my mind

  • You know the song's hardcore when the violinist tears his bow strands playing along. Fuck yeah.

  • One of the best bands of all time, but they aren't recognized as such. I can't wait for their new album that comes out Tuesday.

  • @SAIL4323 GASP! They have a new album!?! know the title?

  • @anishabashir1990

All At Once. You can probably get it anywhere that sells music. It's in the top 10 on iTunes, so they're doing okay.

  • Loved the song when my wife and I saw them perform it at Disney Hall in downtown L.A. and a few months later when we saw them do it from the VIP seats at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on Santa Monica. I'm sure we'll love them again when we see them preform at the Ford Amphitheater near the Rose Bowl in Hollywood on April 29th. They are a great group that is only just getting the recognition they deserve.

  • 2:36 best moment

  • Sums up that feeling when you see her after all those months

  • One of the best songs this decade. Such a fantastic band. Can't wait for their new album to drop in a week.

  • sometimes it all comes together - not predictable but impressive when it happens. they nailed it with this one

  • Ironic since they are on Letterman they played this song sometime around midnight. lol

  • @Jesseangelmorales I don't think thats irony. Really nice though :)

  • Probably one of the best performances I've ever seen on Letterman.

  • Ta spane!!!

  • Fuckin' A. The intensity of the violins right after he says "You know that she'll break you in two" gives me goosebumps.

  • Absolutely and totally amazing.

  • ... and your friends say what is it, you look like you've just seen a goat lol

  • @joecrookes You know it's not goat, right? It's ghost....

  • Wow! Great performance

  • Saw them live at Disney Hall in downtown L.A and then a couple months later at the Troubadour on Santa Monica in West Hollywood. Great both times! With or without the string quartet they're well worth the effort.

  • man i would love to see this song in person! String instruments make every song sound better!!

  • best band of 09? one of the best bands of the decade!

  • @streetlightsx

one of the best bands of the decade? The best band ever!

  • so underrated

  • 2:12 I think she just creamed her cotton panties

  • I like how the song has "feelings". The beats and tempo get faster and angrier as the story progresses. It fits in perfectly with the story. You don't see that often, very well done!!

  • I thought the lead singer was English when I first heard airborne toxic event; one of the few American singers that doesn't have a discernible American accent. This is such an amazing song; love their stuff but this particular song is heartwrenchinglyly good.

  • @republicofheaven i had that same thought too when i first heard them. "this guy is not American, but i cant place the accent!"

  • "...And you're too drunk to notice that everyone is staring at you. You just don't care what you look like, the world is falling around you."

  • sounds like the church..

  • @techgeek97 fyi i had a seizure when i first heard this song

  • lmfao the chick on the keyboard looks like shes havin a seizure rofl

  • Poets and artists struggle to capture the wrenching, can't catch your breath, there's no tomorrow pain of being left behind. Mikel Jollett and this masterpiece captures that feeling as well as anyone or anything I've come across in a very long time. A classic.

  • Is she having a seizure?

  • SERIOUS David Bowie influence on these guys. This song is great.

  • Yeah awesome.

  • great live version, it's a shame when artists have to cut their songs down due to tv time issues. the emotion of the song is lost a little bit when the instrumental parts are shortened. i'm not a musician, so be gentle. just the opinion of a fan.

  • something wrong with the drummers back...

  • ~~Chills ~~

  • Nah the cellist, he didn't break his string he just broke some of the hair's in his bow. It happens pretty easily when your playing like that.

  • Nah the cellist, he didn't break his string he just broke some of the hair's in his bow. It happens pretty easily when your playing like that.

  • absolutely amazing... how is there even a thumbs down

  • just wondering, did one of the guy in the quartet break a string?

  • was wondering the same thing, pretty sure he broke it early

  • whoever put the calder string quartet and TATE together on one stage was pure genius...and noah is the coolest bass player on the planet....

  • Oh the turmoil of pursuing a girl at a bar, our troubles in the richest societies of the world are so dire; immense; melancholy.

  • @marksamuelsoncable how about not pursuing a girl at a bar, more so running from a particular girl who was a huge part of your life...and then running into her at a bar

  • just saw them live on the 25th at the echo club in los angeles.

Definetly one of the best nights of my life. They are such amazing people i got to meet them and i got a picture with my girlfriend anna :)

  • I love how this song starts out soft and grows and grows in power until it stops.

  • Congrats guys!!! I have a feeling this song is gonna be real big!!

  • I have this album, and every song is amazing. But THIS song.......I just can't get enough of it. There comes a time when you hear a song and think to yourself, how the hell did they come up with that?....to me, this is that song.

  • shit

where is tehir very long and good intro?

they musnt leave that out only while playing @ letterman

    but amazing song

  • This is the most amazing song ever!!!

  • an amazing sad song. :(

  • haha dave:

"heh, that was good. i liked that."

  • A few friends of mine urged me to listen to these guys. I listened to this and a few others and though 'yeah, not bad.' I've just listened to this for about the third time and I've just been blown apart. I'm a 27 year old male blubbering my eyes out. This is pure gold and it sends shivers down my spine. Such imagery and emotion - a story that most can relate to. Outstanding.

  • I can't stop playing this song over and over and over and...

  • me too!

  • awsome! at 3:24 the violinist broke a string.

  • thats horse hair from the bow

  • really, really well done song.

  • absolutely stunning!

  • letterman absolutely fuckin loved that show

  • Amazing live version, Lazy eye by silversun pickups is amazing on letterman too. He makes them speed up the performances for a shorter set i like how it makes most of the songs.

  • Reminds me of The Church and Joy Division. Love it!

  • i agree about the church.

  • Love this song!!!!

  • 3:18 He is going crazy or somethin

  • LOL! I think anyone that had to go through the emotions of this song regularly to perform it would eventually go nutz. Probably get suicidal, LOL!

  • THIS SONG ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY

  • tell me he doesnt sound just like Justin Furstenfeld from blue october..love both bands

  • awesome

  • one of the best live bands

  • I like them and like this song but...no there nor.

    Think about it...

  • great!

  • Amazing!

  • I would happily marry anyone on that stage. Quartet included. However, Anna, you and I would have to move. My state wouldn't allow it. =]

  • LOL

  • Almost reminds me of Sigur Ros. Almost.

  • i feel ya

  • for sure, I totally hear it too! Good ear!

  • 1:44, the girl is definately feeling the music :l

  • I: Yup..... really really. -Smirks-

  • 2:36 man

  • Wow!!! That was friggin' awesome! Letterman doesn't usually give compliments, so I guess that's saying something!

  • "I really enjoyed that!"

  • Actually I said nothing of the sorts. Please leave the "witty" comments to those who have a functioning brain.

  • this isn't emo you buttfucking tard.

  • luv it luv it luv it

  • 1:54 I love the violinist on the right... it's like somebody left the fast forward switch on on him lol

  • LMFAO!! You are right.

  • I was thinking the same thing.. He's into it!

  • what do you mean he didnt hit the right note?!?!? did you hear the falsettot?!?!

  • Love the song. But why is there no live versions where he hits the high note "and you walk"? He must have hit it in studio right? hmmm

  • He does hit it but not in the rashed voice like in the studio.

I don't know. Studio version seems much more calm and unrushed. That's just my opinion.

  • i got to see them last night ... they were awesome

  • Awesome! congrats on the spot! XD

  • I think this is the best version of this song on the internet...although the SXSW version this year is also good....either way it totally out-rocks the "real radio" version.

    Gotta love the quartet!!!!!!!!!!

  • It is really good. I'm surprised only 100,000 views!

  • these lyrics blew me away..these guys are def one of the best bands in 09

  • @haggler50 I agree a lot of people like myself can relate to this song.

  • no words to describe... :-)

  • haha that was great! good to see letterman obviously enjoyed it also!

  • these guys are true musicians through and through.

    breathtaking..

  • This song will go down into history of being the best song of 2009....

Just saw them live, they are so fucking good and this song is on top of everything else

  • The album with this song was originally released in 2008, but whatever, it's pretty awesome. I heard that their last tour date is in December, and then they'll finally start recording a new album.

  • Comment removed

  • @Fisch269

Hmm, it was maybe the second best song of 2008.

  • @Fisch269 Unfortunately, you were wrong.

  • David Letterman ftw. Love this song.

  • This version kicks so much ass!

  • Indeed

  • care1281 - The show aired on 01/15/09, however these late night guys all take a month off around xmas. They tape a batch of shows before they shut down, and usually you can tell because the opening monologues are quite so "todays news" specific. Poor Paul left the cat out of the bag with his remark. BTW, incredible performance, incredible song!!

  • skincheftom - Thanks for the 411. Your insight into the Christmas break makes sense and even explains the subtle negative reaction on Letterman's part to Paul's "letting the cat out of the bag" which is why I questioned the authenticity of his earlier remark. Youtube is so cool you can brainstorm with other people.

  • First of all I think this was a fantastic live performance. I'd hate to detract from that point, but Letterman's secondhand guy (Paul?) asks "Where are they going to be at Christmas?" bothers me. If the show was broadcast around Christmas time the implication is that the band should be booked for a great show, but if it was in January, then the implication on his part would be that the band is the flavor of the month. When was the actual broadcast?

  • so, so great. this version just has so much great emotion and feeling in it.

  • Fucking eh! Goodness. They killed it!

  • They're a sweet combo with that quartet, I love it.

  • I listened to this song for the first time ever while driving on a completely bare country road at 3 in the morning. The median and middle stripe illuminated the night. I was completely sober, sane, and had been awake for 40 hours.

The full moon provided the theme, this song was the soundtrack, and I was still a supporting character.

  • that was beautiful

  • can somebody who knows about playing drums tell me what the drummer is doing starting at 1:01? technique and stuff like that. thanx

  • cant you figure that out yourself? thats really basic stuff man..

  • no i cant find out myself cuz ik now nothing about the drums. thats why im asking somebody..

  • basic 4 beat. on 2 hit snare on 4 hit bass. and on 1-4 hit hi-hat closed.

  • um... probably the best live performance of a song I have seen in a while...

  • she aint she just reali gets into it coz dis is a fukin sick song

    gd jobs lads :)

  • bitch on the keyboard is epiliptic

  • HAHAAHA

  • never heard of this band but this singer is fukkin sick

  • Great band and catchy song! See you @ pukkelpop festival in Belgium (21 august 2009).

  • amazing.

    gives you goosebumps.

  • That was a fantastic performance.

Letterman really enjoyed that, like usually after someone performs he never is that responsive.

  • disagree. i don't think there's a certain amt of air time he has to fill at this point.

  • Wow, this is an outstanding live performance. Intense.

  • awesome song dude my teacher just showed me it i love the voialin and the guitar and stuff come together

  • I must have listened to this like 100 times.

I must say though, the pianist is fun to watch.. but it doesn't sound like she's playing anything.

  • haha yeah you're right

  • Looks like she is having a stroke.

  • shes playing the ambient background music, which you really cant hear unless you are listening to the studio version with headphones.

  • this is my fav song ever<33 i love them
