ok....here we go.....you dont have to syphon the water out....thats what pumps are for....as for the lights....they can be housed in the top square of wood....as for the filter....well your not going to have a lake full of fish in there are you....an internal filter would be fine...as for the nervous fish....discus arent nervous.. put a few caves in and your laughing...

Nice plan. There are some practical considerations to bear in mind though.
eg. water doesn't siphon out of low tanks very well. Nervous fish are better in higher tanks eg. discus. Housing lights neatly is a problem. Also you couldn't use a canister type filter. It could still be worthwhile as it's space-saving and certainly different.
who cares if its all ready been made...the product would still sell...jus think of products in supermarkets like cans of pop...so shh before you speak :)
Great idea. I asked my roommate who is a finish carpenter about this before, but he brought up a good point: most of the fun is having the Cichlids at eye level so you can watch them.
Thats why it is an open top. What I wonder is where his filtration will go for this set-up. Even if there is some space for a small wet-dry system underneath, you still have multiple power cords running aross your room to the table.
But the fun is seeing all the colors and fins, not the skinny top of the fish. Plus, when they're at eye level the big cichlids scheme and plot your demise!
