This is atrocious even if it is young enough to not remember this later on in life. All of these procedures (with the exception of the shots) can be done with local anesthetics later on. Hell, even dogs get treated better when they have their ears or tails done and are always under anesthesia when castrated.
I dont see something wrong in this video. the practices here are scientifically supported. if you will not castrate them, it will result to tainted meat, plus it prevents infighting in the pen because of reduced aggression. I am a 4-H leader& I think it is educational to introduce our young society to humane meat raising practices. Everything in this video has been scientifically documented as beneficial to the survival of the animal & future humane care. I wanted to show this video to my group as training, but I am offended by the language in the posts.

Pigs originally got their iron from dirt but because of the sterile environment (for the pigs' health) they don't get it. Without iron shots, which are not any different than human shots, half of a pigs litter or more would die within the first two weeks.
Their teeth are actually not like ours, their softer. If the teeth were left in place then it would lead to them cutting their mom and possibly infecting her. Ear notching, have you ever had something pierced? As for castrating they won't even know what happened as soon as you put them back with their mom.

I know i'm gonna catch flak for this comment, but there was nothing inhumane done to any of those piglets. Castration, ear notching, and teeth cutting are necessary procedures in the swine industry. To be honest ripping out the testes causes the least amount of pain, swelling, and bleeding to the piglet.

@candi17ui - I appreciate this video greatly. But it is not directed at most consumers, who live in cities and suburbs. How are city folks to understand the context, when we see a piglet wriggling in pain? Perhaps an expanded 4H could help raise much-needed awareness among more urban and suburban kids nationwide. Because there is a HUGE gap in awareness about how meat comes to table. (As for comments, no-one should be surprised about that. There's practically no accountability on youtube!)

These steps are NOT "necessary" for pigs who live as nature intended rather than on a factory farm...and no anesthesia? If they ate appropriate food (suckling from mama & then on to appropriate food for young pigs) they would not be iron deficient. Cut your own teeth - does it hurt? Notch your own ears - does it hurt? Slice open your scrotum and rip out your testicles - all without anesthesia - DOES IT HURT? You bet it DOES! This is a video of cruelty and mutilation, NOT "necessary steps".

@4Dogzathome Ok let's get things straight. Pigs are not good at keeping iron. Mom's milk is almost absent of it. Pigs originally got their iron from dirt but because of the sterile environment (for the pigs' health) they don't get it. Without iron shots, which are not any different than human shots, half of a pigs litter or more would die within the first two weeks.

I know i'm gonna catch flak for this comment, but there was nothing inhumane done to any of those piglets. Castration, ear notching, and teeth cutting are necessary procedures in the swine industry. To be honest ripping out the testes causes the least amount of pain, swelling, and bleeding to the piglet.

@Resoses I agree with you that this video is difficult to watch. But these are things that need to be done to protect the farmers and the other animals (including the other pigs). Eyeteeth eventually grow into sharp tusks, and uncastrated males tend to be more aggressive and dangerous.

@FearTheJo Actually not true. My friend had a pig farm. Castrated pigs are quieter and easier to handle. Baby pigs can get rough with eachother, but thats a reason the teeth are cut. Its all pretty cruel as never is any pain medicing given. Pigs I guess could fight and kill eachother, but usually pigs don't kill to eat eachother.
