@MrTommyTinkles the weird quality comes from the fishman pickups he uses... also i think some of the strings were a little out of tune. but i heard while recording basement he would tune some strings a little sharp to get a stomach wrenching sound out of the boy
i'm surprised i just found this for the first time today. great song, even better artist. probably the only musician that i realistically imagine myself still listening to in 25-30 years.
Thanks for posting this. From the first time I heard this tune, which was quite recently,(I'm a little late to the Elliott Smith party I'm afraid) I've loved it. I'd love it if you did a cover. I loved your Sparklehorse cover and I learned how to play it from watching you do it. Could use your help figuring this one out as well.
A life cut too short...but what magnificent art. His music lives on, within us. Lovely, touching...but is the low E string flat? O, who cares...see you later...Peace, Out, S
Elliott has quite a penchant for producing sweet sounds from this "guitar," or so I would assume this is the prefered nomenclature. Alas I must concede my knowledge of sounds pales in comparison to Goylesk, the expert on sounds.
I hear a "guitar" is similar to a "piano," and some even say it is similar to a "trumpet," in that they all make sound. I don't know if that is true though, its just what my friend said.
i listen to pull hair rub eye almost every day. i have it in reverse and fowards. if youve never herd it fowards you should let me email it to you. the lyrics are beautiful and amazing
yeah, definitely looks like a j45. doesnt sound so great though (could be how it was mic'd maybe).. but also the headstock doesnt really strike me as gibson.. but yeah def. a j-45ish body.. also my original point was that i had never seen him play this guitar.. i've seen him play another proper mid 60s j-45, but never this one...
This song was originally released on the Heatmiser album "Mic City Sons." For those of you who have never heard the band or didn't know that Elliot was in the band, do yourself a favor and go buy their albums! They are excellent. "Mic City Sons" is a masterpiece, which also included the work of Neil Gust(vocals/guitars), Sam Coomes(Bass), and Tony Lash(drums). Most people from Portland still mourn the loss of this excellent band!
he could also play the drums, and bass etc, i believe he played all the insturments in his recordings..easily the most underrated musician of the 90's and early 2000...god i wish he was still here
here's an obvious statement, elliott writes the most effective songs

Is the microphone ran through an autotune or is it just bad quality?

Does anyone know definitively if this is in "Open C"? Or his usual, full step down? Or standard tuning??

open C, 100%

I love this song. I really like the Heatmiser version, too, unlike most of the songs that Elliott did with them and then re-did solo.

i think that is a guitar, it appears to be made of wood and have 7-8 strings.

ah yes the guitar, part of the family of objects know as instruments. yus, yus, i do believe you are correct sir...
snoogatron 3 years ago 5
If you listen closely, the "guitar" also produces some sort of sounds. I know because I have heard many sounds before, so I am an expert on sounds.

This song is great. I prefer it in open C tuning though. The G to C chords remind me of Belle & Sebastien's "If She Wants Me". Worth checking out.

yeah the headstock looks off like not too sure, right about the sound too, alot of fret buzz .. but deffo a j45 shape
chris8584 4 years ago
this song is tuned down really low, so hence the fret buzz...and it sounds like it has a pickup, not a mic. but thats just me
