Norwegian and Swedish are very similar, too, yet they're considered different languages. Boundaries between languages and dialects are not as easy to enstablish as you seem to think - as a matter of fact, geographical factors have very little to do with them. (e.g.: as a standard Italian speaker, Spanish is much easier to understand than most Italian dialects.)
I met Byron a few months ago when he visited Hawaii. Uchinaguchi is a language, NOT a dialect. The language of Okinawa main island ( Naha / Shuri dialect ) is distinct from the languages of Miyako Island, which is distinct from the Yaeyama Islands which are further distinct from Amami Oshima. He gave us greetings in all 4 languages as comparative. Think Okinawa as English, Yaeyama as Chinese, Miyako as French, Amami as Spanish.........you get the idea!
My advice to you would be to open a book on history of the region and read up before you post such comments. Many jobs, ha! at what price? Wholesale prostitution of Hawaiian culture and destruction of one of the most productive pieces of land (Waikiki). Perhaps you should come here and see firsthand; not just rely on friends who, thanks to our "wonderful" school system, may very well not even have the slightest idea as to the history of the very land they are residing on.
Calling Okinawan a dialect would be like calling Spanish a dialect of French. Its clearly a different language than Japanese despite some similarities. I would love to learn the Okinawan language.
@Raymasaki how about kume-mura ? as i know okinawa ppl hate japanese for their occupaction of Okinawa kindom during late 19 century. For the war crimes which japanese soldiers commited during world war 2 forcing local okinawa people to jump cliff, commit suicide, raped local young school girls before killed them. Japnese love okinawa island, but does japanese love okinawa people? Does okinawa people love japan?? if so, why okinawa independence movement exists?
@Raymasaki you can't associate linguistics with politics because they don't go hand in hand; for example Tahiti is a territory of France, but Tahitians aren't ethnically French...and Hawai'i is governed by the U.S. but Hawaiians aren't Native Americans. In reality the Tahitian and Hawaiian languages are extremely similar to one another yet have nothing to do with each other politically. Just because Tahiti is France's territory doesn't make French and Tahitian languages similar.
ive seen several JP tv shows (okinawa specials) seems to fit VERY well to me.
Okinawa doesn't have its own Government they need Japan like Hawaii needs US. & YES Hawaii has t own culture & traditions one of they many reasons why Most Americans Love & respect Hawaii.
@Raymasaki Okinawan and Japanese cultures are somewhat similar, but nothing alike. In fact, the Japanese began discriminating against Okinawans due to cultural and linguistic DIFFERENCES. Why do you think the Okinawan language is almost extinct in the Ryukyus?
@Raymasaki 1) Shintoism has nothing to do with Okinawan religion.
2) Okinawans who tried to find work in mainland Japan during WWII were treated as enemy spies if they spoke Okinawan. 3) Japanese soldiers prior to the Battle of Okinawa routinely murdered Okinawans, who spoke Uchinaguchi to each other, on the flimsy excuse of spying.
You are not a native speaker of either Okinawan nor Japanese, you don't appear to have had formal training in either language and you have shown that your knowledge of linguistics is rather limited. Perhaps you should open a book and educate yourself beforehand, that way you wont say such oversimplifications as "shinto=ancestor worship". Can you really speak for the Ryukyuan people? I've experienced discrimination for my ethnic heritage and for speaking Okinawan.
@Raymasaki and BTW based on having to deal with American tourists here for nearly all of my life, I seriously doubt that our "culture & traditions one of they many reasons why Most Americans Love & respect Hawaii." It's rather a distorted view of this place as some sort of "Tropical Paradise" at the expense of the Native Hawaiians and their culture.
I am English, studied Japanese and just can't see this is Japanese at all. Seems like a closely related language: linguists call it Japonic, which is japanese plus (of which Okinawan is counted) the Ryukyuan languages. In the same way as Azeri is like Anatolian Turkish
as a tourist, I found the tomb style and some culture thing similar to hokkien ppl's. I think it was because of the influence of immigrants during Ming dynasty. I thought hokkien language should at least have some similar to okinawan language. I am wrong. except the rhinolalia part, and some pronounciation of words, nothing more. Anyway, LOVE Ryuku琉虬!!
He is an Amerasian orphan born and raised in Okinawa. His mother is Okinawan and father is a U.S. serviceman stationed in Okinawa. He was abondoned by them when he was a baby.

@buckman625 each Region of Japan features it own Dialect.
okinawan is still a japonic language.
they have “their own” Religous beliefs
“ancestor worship” Same as shinto!
Most Japanese Don't discriminate against them.
Most younger people want to learn standard Japanese.
they can still keep their Native language
Uchinaaguchi , Okinawan language if they want to preserve it.
and should
