Roddy Piper doesn't quite see it that way, or at least he didn't when he made "Legends Never Die" with Bruno Sammartino. Owen was uncomfortable being up there, in Hot Rod's words, and Owen was only doing it to avoid getting fired, so he could continue to provide for his family. We'll probably never know what really happened that night, as we only have a lot of theories about what may have happened.

Owen was afraid of heights, and he accidentally triggered the single quick release mechanism. Why did the harness only have one? Because apparently the WWF thought it was funny. Kind of fucked up isn't it?

So much so that a soft (or soft compared the concrete below the ring) doesn't do much to "break the fall". Parachutes are meant to slow descent. They decrease impact. In Owen's case the single release mechanism was comedy at the expense of safety.
@Laffytaffy3562 He was supposed to descend from the rafters like sting did in wcw. Something went wrong with the harness causing owen to fall over 70 ft, landing chest first on the ring ropes. For the record this is extremely easy to look up.

@Laffytaffy3562 From what I understand, they didn't use the standard (and arguably safer) harness. Vince wasn't happy with the amount of time it took for someone to get out of the setup. So instead they used a quick release harness (planning to have a comedic entrance). The harness released far too early, causing him to fall. It takes alot of digging to find that info. I might have something slightly wrong, but more or less that's what happened.

The reason that I've heard which seems the most likely is this: it's well documented he didn't like heights. it had been suggested that moving around a little bit trying to get comfortable might help. he likely did that accidentally activating the release.

Roddy Piper doesn't quite see it that way, or at least he didn't when he made "Legends Never Die" with Bruno Sammartino. Owen was uncomfortable being up there, in Hot Rod's words, and Owen was only doing it to avoid getting fired, so he could continue to provide for his family. We'll probably never know what really happened that night, as we only have a lot of theories about what may have happened.

@ajolliff54 vince sending a guy up there as a way to spoof wcw and basicly punish owen for not wanting to do a story whre hes sleeping with debra was kind of a shitty thing to do though...but really yeah it was an accident and really was just the sign of the times and how much wrestling had devolved to a gimmck trash tv sport which was sad. Im more sickened with the way they handled it after with not stoping the show, the awful tribute show, and showing the funeral really had a bad taste to it

@badgirlflaka He was up in the rafters of the arena where he was going to make his entrance while being brought down from supported cables. But sadly it was a botched entrance and he fell from a great distance. I believe he hit his head on the wrestling ring and died on his way to the hospital. I can be wrong, but I know for a fact that this all could have been avoided if Vince Mcmahon (WWF OWNER) didnt try to copy WcW (Rival pro wrestling company).

@619wwefanation For a harness and grapple line, it's standard to have multiple release mechanisms. The gimmick was Owen would fall flat on his face at a safe distance. He was a terrible superhero. Owen was afraid of heights, and he accidentally triggered the single quick release mechanism. Why did the harness only have one? Because apparently the WWF thought it was funny. Kind of fucked up isn't it?

@619wwefanation From that height, it's highly unlikely he would've survived no matter where he landed. See, when you're falling you pick up huge amounts of acceleration. So much so that a soft (or soft compared the concrete below the ring) doesn't do much to "break the fall". Parachutes are meant to slow descent. They decrease impact. In Owen's case the single release mechanism was comedy at the expense of safety.

@Laffytaffy3562 He was supposed to descend from the rafters like sting did in wcw. Something went wrong with the harness causing owen to fall over 70 ft, landing chest first on the ring ropes. For the record this is extremely easy to look up.

@Laffytaffy3562 From what I understand, they didn't use the standard (and arguably safer) harness. Vince wasn't happy with the amount of time it took for someone to get out of the setup. So instead they used a quick release harness (planning to have a comedic entrance). The harness released far too early, causing him to fall. It takes alot of digging to find that info. I might have something slightly wrong, but more or less that's what happened.

The reason that I've heard which seems the most likely is this: it's well documented he didn't like heights. it had been suggested that moving around a little bit trying to get comfortable might help. he likely did that accidentally activating the release.
