Whow, this reminds me of my cousin James skateboarding down North Laguna, Ledroit Street! and almost crashing! Brings back so many memories... LOVE ELO!!! Since I was a kid, I've always been hooked on 70's music :)
these guys were amazing live, as were many bands......so why the lip synching on tv appearances? nothing sucks like seeing a band perform the studio version "live".
I never took ELO for granted; Jeff and his tearful cry in his gorgeous vocals, a delicious sound of doo wop, classical, and good ole rock n roll, and so epic! I love "So Fine" and "It's A Livin' Thing", and of course "Strange Magic", and so many others. It's just because they were a far cry from Led Zeppelin or The Who. Jeff Lynne and ELO were unabashedly making gorgeous pop tunes!
@Mooncut Kelly NEVER got the credit he deserved. NEVER! And now he is gone. I sort of hate Jeff Lynne a bit for becoming an egomaniac as the years went on. Yet, he is the genius and we would have none of these songs if not for him. Still.....
ELO one of the most influential bands ever! just think that George Harrison, was Lynne's best friend and had a bunch of albums produced by him as well as being part of the Traveling Wilburies and producing also Tom Petty and many other fantastic artists...LONG LIVE ELO!
I miss Hugh Alexander Mcdowell...great name! I wish he would get together with ELO and have a reunion concert....I sure as hell would be there, come hell or high water,....can u imagine,,,,,what a show that would be:) Love u Hugh!
Thank you so much for posting this, this song means so much to me and I never thought I'd get to see it live since it was before my time, but when I hear it I think of my daddy so thank you so much
This was when bands had real talent and musical expertise, not auto-tunes, back then you did not have the same technology you have today you earned your appreciation through your talent. Today's music and artists need to really look at history some are really good but others are sheer crap.
@comfortablepadd Does making an embarrassing spectacle of one's self onstage qualify a singer as being the best ever? Personally, I think Jeff Lynne is the best singer ever, but if it helps any, comfortablepadd, he was accidentally nearly electrocuted onstage during a very early ELO performance. ;-)
This song was so brilliant for it's time...sounds like something recorded in the early 30s with a maudlin atmosphere, very sentimental and quite nostalgic -
@MsDieseld It was the 70's, OK? Does the 'fro offend you or something? Do you expect the videos to be edited and Jeff Lynne's hairstyle changed to make it more fashionably "acceptable"? Stop being a snob!
Oh wow - takes me back, caravan holidays in Weymouth as a spotty 14 year old with all the dress sense of a pubescent Jason King - all flares and waistcoat. Thinking I looked cool trying to stand out of the light to hide my spots while trying to work up the courage to ask some girl also on holiday. This song came on, and I took my chance, gingerly walked upto her, and stuttered a " wanna dance" only be told "f*ck off" by her cockney accent::) Still love this song though:)
@TheBeatlesRoooock Thanks sweetheart...but believe me if you had seen my dress style at that stage of my life you would have run to the hills:). I looked like Austin Powers on acid:)
@TheBeatlesRoooock :)...well they were good days and thankfully the spots cleared off my face and the dress sense slowly improved - still wonder what the girl who told me " f*ck off" is doing now:)
@yeovil50 She's probably a mother and has a not-so-interesting job. Now I wonder if she remembers you. Well, I wouldn't forget anyone who dressed the way you dressed...
Spots are recentley starting to clear off my face, but I've dressed the same since I was 8 (Like a boy.)
@TheBeatlesRoooock Good for you - don't follow what others or the fashion police want or tell you to wear - be yourself, dress yourself and think for yourself and that is being unique and being you!
I can remember the Midnight Special being on TV a lot when I was growing up back in the day, but for the life of me, I cannot remember ELO being on it, much less hosting it.
...'Don't you realise the things we did, were all for real, not a dream. I just can't believe, they've all faded out of view.' Pure, pure class. Thank's Jeff for such beautiful lyrics/songs
Back when musician's had degrees and could do more than write great music. Boston is another one. Great, great music. E.L.O. had so many great hits. Many people didn't know who the band was and were surprised when they found out the a couple of their favorite songs were this same band.
Such a great underrated band!!! I have all of thier shit!! All of these guys had master's degrees in music. Saw them live in 1980, best light show I have ever seen, and I have been to many, many concerts!! They don't make music like this anymore!!
@skemeny they actually credit bowie on that melody hehe, but yeah this does sound similar aswell.. check out all the young dudes by bowie. well mott and the hoople was the band name at the time

@movejefflynnelo I was 12 and it was a Saturday night, this show was on as that was what I did every week, watched while I was ironing my shirts to wear to school the following week. Been in love with this band since. They've been with me through two divorces and the death of my third and final husband. Their songs will be with me when I go on, too.
I was 13. What a sweet song. thank you so much for posting movejesslynnelo.
