I personally prefer it when people say "good morning" because then I can answer "no" and write it off as a joke rather than sounding weird. The problem is that I've gotten the habit of doing it and now I answer "no" whenever someone says "hello" as well. :(

Try just nodding in their general direction, use an Ipod or similar too to have an appearence of not hearing. (Thus the Hi-part don't occur.) ;)
