Off and on for about 35 years or so. I regret the "off" parts. And if the resources that we had today, with tabs and the internet, had been around back in the 70s...oh man, I don't even wanna think about it. All the hours spent with a record player, backing the needle up to try and get that little bit right, trying to guess how the guys on the records did stuff. Nowadays kids just have to do a quick google and the internet's overflowing with instruction.
So true!only just learned to play"Blackbird" by the beatles, could never find the Tab nor work it out,so as you say just Googled it and hey presto!!next project "The Harry Lime Theme" Gustavoblues plays a superb version
That's the beautiful thing about it. These kids will never make it at anything, they have no sense of music, just the ability to read numbers on lines.
You give them a simple melody, they can't work it out.
It's brilliant and I can't understand why people in "business" are so anxious to tell you what or where you picked up the tune ? I feel just joy, you play the tunes I wanna hear. Thanks for your attention and live well !
I love this song. However, you will never be able to find it on any of his albus that remain in print. I think it was released originally on Yazoo Basin Boogie but for some reason it no longer is included. Strange.
You have great flair, but this song confuses me! starts off as "Alices Restaurant" goes to "Mississippi Flow Rag"...some Dallas Rag, Saw Mr Grossman live last month in Southport (UK) and it does sound like a Medley
I don't know what to say...the version I'm playing is my interpretation of someone else's interpretation of Stefan's tune. I've never heard him play it. The first part of the tune...the part everybody says sounds like Alice's Restaraunt...also sounds like many other tunes. It's a very well-worn guitar cliche. Arlo Guthrie didn't invent it, nor did he invent the chord progression. I'd really be interested to hear Stefan play it.
No, its me, went back to his latest CD and he does play a medley on stage of three songs nothing like your rendition, So I havent heard him play Sunday Rag! My Bad....PS Marvelous playing ..by the way!!
Thanks! In my humble opinion, staying on tempo is the hardest thing to do when playing this style. And (again IMHO) listeners will forgive a wrong note sooner than they'll forgive a note that's played off tempo.
Wonderfully clean playing, the notes clear and distinct with the tempo moderate and controlled as good guitar rags "should" be played. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Nice stuff, like the sound you get for the camera. I know it's not a recording studio and seems like one chip camera. And that can be a challenge to say the least.
I've gotten that comment several times (outside youtube). I've heard licks like the first part of the tune (and Alice's Restaurant) used in lots of different songs. It's a neat little walk up from G to C (G-D7-G7-C). If you play the chords you can hear that barbershop tune "Sweet Caroline"!
(not so)StupidFingers, GREAT playing and sound, makes me regretting my OM-21. Would you tell me where I can buy the tab from? Btw, I don't know of a recording of Hotdogs, but Stefan is playing that tune on hi 'Stefan Grossman - a retrospective 1971-1988' video.
RenauB...to get the tab, google "Steve J. McWilliam" and "Sunday Rag". It's in "Tabledit" format, so you'll need to go to the tabledit website (tabledit dot com) to get the software so you can read the tab. Thanks for the info on Stefan's video!
Great gutiar playing! I'm impressed! I write and play my own songs, and copy songs. My favorites are of corse Guster, T. Rex, John Denver, and alot inbetween.
No, I wasn't saying you were playing different notes (all the notes you play are spot on) but that some of the ways you finger the chords differ from mine. Actually it is in one passage where you slide up on the 2nd string from a G chord and then play the first string at the 5th fret. I use my pinky for the slide and roll to the pad to play the 1st string. You slide up with your 3rd finger and use your pinky to fret the 1st string. More logical.
Hey Fingers - nicely done !! Many thanks for my acknowledgement in the description much appreciated. You certainly seem to have nailed the tune and watching closely you use a couple of interesting looking fingerings which differ from my own - I may pinch those. Great playing mate keep it up. Steve J. McWilliam.
Thanks Steve! The only thing I had to go by was the tab and midi you made using tabledit. I searched high and low for a recording of Stefan Grossman doing it, but to no avail. As far as the fingerings go, I don't remember altering anything, but you know how it goes...after awhile the fingers (as stupid as mine may be) sort of adopt the tune and rearrange it to suit them. Thanks again!
Thanks! And...I don't know. I copped the arrangement off the internet (duh). I'm not familiar with Hotdog. I've looked high and low for a recording of Grossman doing his original version of this tune, but no luck.
@sunbeams7 Yeah, dude. Merle & Chet used that intro in nearly the same form all the time.

I love the clarity and precision of your playing, and I think your tone is a delight, especially in the lower register.
I wish you would play just a breath slower, to let those bass tones sweeten (the way Blind Blake always used to).
