This is what I would call "Class"; this music is something to wrap your arms around along with your favorite girl, and enjoy the evening. thank you for posting.
No, I think this version is more likable than Barnet's. Of course, Barnet had a great Ellington-ish sounding band, but I never really cared for his horn playing. He used to thup the notes too much.
@M1GARRAND1 I belive they slowed it down here due to a lack of defibrilators at this venue. I'm sure some of those dancers might have gone down at full speed. I think Elgart Bros. shared Barnet's Midas touch with Big Band scores. The nuances of shading in this are really incredible. Percussive brass taking turns with syruppy saxes, to me, it's just amazing! I just slammed a band for going too slow on this, but they'd missed a lot of other elements as well. This is perfection played slowly.
@chkjns Yes...at second viewing I enjoyed it. As I get older, I seem to be shelving my hard Jazz for Hugo Montenegro and Mancini. Defib comment was too much, Ha Ha.
I have loved the studio version of this for many years. What a wonderful surprise to see a live version. They reimagined Barnet's old tune here. I just love this!!!!!!
Thank you for posting. I have never seen a video of Les and Larry before and this is terrific. Do you have any more? I am currently the bass bone player on the Les Elgart Orchestra. We played NYE in Dallas, and last week had a gig in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. We play Skyliner on amost all gigs. It is a thrill to play this Bass Bone part for obvious reasons, like the comments by callmeBe
Too cavalier with the countdown at the beginning, and it takes a few moments for the group to get together properly. I always love those third bone parts--and how the brass manages its sound from the bass bone up (rather than lead trumpet down).. Very symphonic--and un-jazz like up until groups like this in the 1950's (with the exception of Kenton). Thanks so much for this posting!!

This is a rare video of L & L
The had such a great sound & danceable beat. The current Elgart band continues with the same sound and beat.
Let the children hear and appreciate it.

@russdorsey1 I was playing an Elgart CD and my kid tried to steal it from me! Can you blame them? There's nothing but garbage out there today.

Kind of a "mickey mouse" version of a really good Barnet number.
