I really like Kenenisa Bekele, I think he is currently one of the greatest middle/long distance runners. He is one of the short runners, but he sure does have the speed. In most cases, it is beneficial for a really good middle/long distance runner to be small built.

I'm not sure Bekele has the sheer speed to run a 7:20 tbh. What made Komen so good at the 3,000 in particular was that he struck a perfect balance between middle and long distance speed - an essential qualty for this event. He ran sub 3.30 1500m AND sub 12.40 5000m. Komen was the perfect middle-long distance hybrid even if Bekele is a superior distance runner.

@danhar2688 yes exactly. Very good comment. Komen has serious middle distance speed. He looks so relaxed at such a fast pace. 7th fastest 1500m man ever. As well. Fifth faster miler ever at 3.46.38 . Cram ran 3.46.32 to put it in perspective. Yet he is right there with Gebrselassie and Bekele over 5000m and held the WR at one stage. He really is the ultimate 3000m runner. Still the only man to go under 8mins for 2 miles.

@newromantic888, I do agree with Daniel Komen's middle/long distance ability. He has an overall fast and relaxed pace. He doesn't have a huge set of afterburners for the end of the race though, but his overall fast average pace is what he uses to run fast times. Usually when someone is pacing him till the end, they will blow him away, but if he's already far ahead, then he doesn't have to worry about that. Other runners run slower on average, but they will kick it up at the end.

i remember pacing bekele in his 5000 WR i stuck with him up to 4000. it was a great experience. only once have i beat him. that kick is amazing, especially when u beat his kick

Don't forget that Komen had excellent pacesetters when he ran his 7:20.67. They lead him to until 4:53 for 2000, which is way faster than what is seen here. Komen was very talented, but never had any thunderous acceleration, the likes of Gebreselassie and Bekele.

I agree with you as far as Komen is concerned. He could keep a fast rock solid pace for a long portion of the race, but he did not have that super acceleration like Gebreselassie or Bekele. As a matter of fact Gebreselassie blew Komen away on the last lap when he said a former WR for the 5,000m run.
