It was actually filmed in a shed down the botton of me garden. We've loads of bits of equipment hanging around in there. Bowie was always popping in. Nice man.
@Chunkazoota I just realized.. It CAN'T be Hansa. This was filmed on October 8th, 1977.. in ITALY (quite possibly Rome) because David was doing Italian press then. It is NOT Hansa, but some studio in Italy. THIS is confirmed here (velvetgoldmine.it/odeon1977.html) and on the BowieGoldenYears website. Title should be changed.
This video is not filmed at HANSA STUDIO 2 as there was no view connection between control and recording space... and this hall is also not former STUDIO 3 which was much smaller... come and join my studio tours there!
@berlinmusicguide What about STUDIO 1? I just saw a video of it and control room is level to the live room as it is in the video. And the flooring is identical as well. Unless STUDIO 1 wasn't around in 1977.. Haha. I don't know. Having seen STUDIO 1 just now on video, I'd say that this WAS shot at Hansa Tonstudio, in STUDIO 1.
@whateveritsnoyes No, Hansa Studio 1 at this studio complex was just opened in early 80's - confirmed fact. There was an older (the first) Hansa Studio 1 back in the 70's in another district in Berlin, but it's also not the one in the video. Send a link if you have of ODEON TV show in 1977!
@berlinmusicguide Ah very true. Something told me Studio 1 wasn't around in the late 70's haha. It is a studio in Italy. See my latest comment to Chunkazoota :)
My feeling is, as much of a ham as Bowie can be, I highly doubt he would be mugging for a film crew while literally recording a song. Looking at Hansa (google it), and having read his accounts of recording there and looking out at The Wall, the studio in this video doesn't really fit. Does it make it less cool? Absolutely not! This is awesome footage from the best Bowie era! Now, some Iggy @ Château d'Hérouville during The Idiot sessions would be DRUGS.
No, of course not. I naturally assumed that it was a mimed promo film, made after the recording. What I found on Google didn't especially look like what's in this film, but the pictures weren't exactly comprehensive, either. The clip also doesn't show a lot of interior. And, it would be good to know what sort of (if any) changes have been made to the interior of Hansa since the 70s, as that could also make a difference in photos.
Well, on Wiki, it says that they didn't use the large studio that had the window overlooking the wall after all. Bowie probably still went in there and looked out the window (which inspired "heroes"), but when actually recording, they used the smaller studio. So, who knows. Plus, a lot can change over 35 years. Have you seen the Château lately? watch?v=fiomvkOAEJA

@callummcphail This is getting boring now... I have been to Hansa Tonstudios and this is not filmed there. As part of my guided tour they mention this video and the fact that it claims to be filmed at Hansa, when it's not. In fact, they don't know where it's film. So, to recap: The people at Hansa say it's not filmed there, and, I've been there and it's not filmed there. It's a great clip, but lets get our facts straight, yeah? You can always email them and ask, be my guest...
@moonplague yeh, cunts like u r boring as fuck! you said it. its hansa, regrdless of what the german gimps at hansa actually say. they probably donteven know the fucking documentary. look at the pictures of bono and edge there during achtung baby sessions, its the same fucking studio yan arse!

So many questions await your charming and 'text/street' replies.
That was just too freaking cool! Bowie is truly a captivating artist, not to mention one handsome devil when in that outfit. Now where did I put my "Heroes" CD?
Although my Italian is pretty poor, I tried to translate the speakers comments. While doing a bit of research, I stumbled upon the 1976 Playboy interview. The comments of the speaker are a condensed version of the most vibrant of Bowies remarks. In the Pl.b. interv., DB appears as a boisterous, arrogant swashbuckler. It also features his conviction that political developments have to be speeded up by the implementation of totalitarian systems [which he later on distanced himself from].
I quit being a homosexual a long time ago. There was a time when I was 50 % gay. Now, I feel tempted only when I'm in Japan. I am never in the grips of self-doubt. I met my wife cause we were dating the same guy. Then we got married and we both went on meeting him.
In our job, you have to be a bastard. People are much more efficient when they are subjected to a regime. And I detest people who waste their time. In my camp, I know I'm the best. Between me and the others, there is no competition. I am a-political. Everything I say is provocative. It's a pretext to put on an act. Most of the people in my family are crazy. [I don't get this]. It would please me to assume that our madness is due to the fact that we are ingenious. But I don't think that's true.
