  • One thing is for sure, this IS the Odeon TV show and it was shot in October of 1977.

  • Comment removed

  • thats exacztly the sound which was in the air in berlin in 77..........you could smell it...........bowie ,always the instinctic creator....

  • .... The Dame, absolutely stylish! ... and look at these boots!!! Must be winter in Berlin! ;))

  • the real star here is ENO

  • Hi, I visited Hansa studios in 2003 & this could be what was the 1st floor ballroom / restaurant / bar area

  • Uhull! For my luck, is despite my english and portugues, I got little bit of italian!

In short... It's a good video!

  • It was actually filmed in a shed down the botton of me garden. We've loads of bits of equipment hanging around in there. Bowie was always popping in. Nice man.

  • @stalkek

And there you have it, folks. The TRUTH at long last!

  • @Chunkazoota A rare but valuable commodity, the truth; some would say invaluable.

  • @Chunkazoota I just realized.. It CAN'T be Hansa. This was filmed on October 8th, 1977.. in ITALY (quite possibly Rome) because David was doing Italian press then. It is NOT Hansa, but some studio in Italy. THIS is confirmed here (velvetgoldmine.it/odeon1977.html) and on the BowieGoldenYears website. Title should be changed.

  • This video is not filmed at HANSA STUDIO 2 as there was no view connection between control and recording space... and this hall is also not former STUDIO 3 which was much smaller... come and join my studio tours there!

  • @berlinmusicguide What about STUDIO 1? I just saw a video of it and control room is level to the live room as it is in the video. And the flooring is identical as well. Unless STUDIO 1 wasn't around in 1977.. Haha. I don't know. Having seen STUDIO 1 just now on video, I'd say that this WAS shot at Hansa Tonstudio, in STUDIO 1.

  • @whateveritsnoyes No, Hansa Studio 1 at this studio complex was just opened in early 80's - confirmed fact. There was an older (the first) Hansa Studio 1 back in the 70's in another district in Berlin, but it's also not the one in the video. Send a link if you have of ODEON TV show in 1977!

  • @berlinmusicguide Ah very true. Something told me Studio 1 wasn't around in the late 70's haha. It is a studio in Italy. See my latest comment to Chunkazoota :)

  • Haha, thx for the video...even though I can't understand a word...

  • This LP was every bit as much of an expression of 'new brutalism' as Geoffrey Copcutt's Cumbernauld. I love it.

  • @whangie1

    How so?

  • Hansa Studios, Meistersaal near Potsdamer Platz...near Der Mauer....

    such atmosphere....

  • Hansa Studios, near Potsdamer Platz...near Der Mauer....

    such atmosphere....

  • Bowie is the Teresa Teng of the Western World!

  • @CelestialEmbodiment

I didn't know about Teresa Teng until just now. Thanks for mentioning her!

  • My feeling is, as much of a ham as Bowie can be, I highly doubt he would be mugging for a film crew while literally recording a song. Looking at Hansa (google it), and having read his accounts of recording there and looking out at The Wall, the studio in this video doesn't really fit. Does it make it less cool? Absolutely not! This is awesome footage from the best Bowie era! Now, some Iggy @ Château d'Hérouville during The Idiot sessions would be DRUGS.

  • @MarsHottentot

No, of course not. I naturally assumed that it was a mimed promo film, made after the recording. What I found on Google didn't especially look like what's in this film, but the pictures weren't exactly comprehensive, either. The clip also doesn't show a lot of interior. And, it would be good to know what sort of (if any) changes have been made to the interior of Hansa since the 70s, as that could also make a difference in photos.

    Agreed on Iggy @ Château!

  • @Chunkazoota

Well, on Wiki, it says that they didn't use the large studio that had the window overlooking the wall after all. Bowie probably still went in there and looked out the window (which inspired "heroes"), but when actually recording, they used the smaller studio. So, who knows. Plus, a lot can change over 35 years. Have you seen the Château lately? watch?v=fiomvkOAEJA

  • bowie sembra un coglione in sto video..sicuramente era colpa delle droghe..lo stimo lo stesso però. forse. si. boh. bella zio.

  • @lamelight

I think he looks very good. If you want to see him looking foolish, go find photos of him on tour around 1987 or so...

  • you know this isn't filmed at hansa

  • @communtyhivemind

Be a dear and tell us where it was filmed at, instead of making useless comments, hmm?

  • GORGEOUSNESS!! DIVINELY BEAUTIFUL!!

  • absolutly great album from bowie période berlin "heroes", great video!!! clément the dreamer....

  • Is this the "Hall by the Wall"?

  • Wow...the video clip was into an italian channel :D

  • To me Bowie's a complete artist a genius!

  • THIS A BRILLIANT VIDEOI!this made my day so brightfull.he s such a beautiful disciplined artist...a genius!many thx for this video.i love old rare David Bowie"s vids.

  • Sorry, this isn't filmed at Hansa Tonstudios.

  • @moonplague

Where was it filmed, then? Don't be obnoxious.

  • @moonplague oh yes it was!

  • @callummcphail This is getting boring now... I have been to Hansa Tonstudios and this is not filmed there. As part of my guided tour they mention this video and the fact that it claims to be filmed at Hansa, when it's not. In fact, they don't know where it's film. So, to recap: The people at Hansa say it's not filmed there, and, I've been there and it's not filmed there. It's a great clip, but lets get our facts straight, yeah? You can always email them and ask, be my guest...

  • @moonplague yeh, cunts like u r boring as fuck! you said it. its hansa, regrdless of what the german gimps at hansa actually say. they probably donteven know the fucking documentary. look at the pictures of bono and edge there during achtung baby sessions, its the same fucking studio yan arse!

  • @callummcphail

Moonplague is correct. This was not filmed at Hansa. Why do you find this so difficult to accept? Why is Moonplague a "cunt" and "boring as fuck" for sharing this information?"German gimps at Hansa'?What is your major malfunction?

So many questions await your charming and 'text/street' replies.

    Yan arse indeed.

  • @callummcphail

Just checked your videos.U2.Hahahahahahahahahahahah.I should have guessed.

  • thx for the post!

  • Very interesting - this cool technical show - his tie is the best!!

  • I need new people with the same strenght in arts and life as bowie's!!!

  • Have you tried IAMX?

  • Comment removed

  • @Chunkazoota it was an italian programme called ODEON, I've some footage of that episode

  • @Darknessanddisgrace

Hi, could you please post this footage? I'd appreciate it.

  • @Chunkazoota sorry for my stupid bad english, they're not footages, but pictures. :)

  • That was just too freaking cool! Bowie is truly a captivating artist, not to mention one handsome devil when in that outfit. Now where did I put my "Heroes" CD?

  • How does he record a piano without headphones on?

  • I like those older synths. Orange Vododer, Moog and so on.

  • I hope that nobody feels offended by this translation. I'm a great Bowie-fan myself. So don't shoot the messenger...

  • Although my Italian is pretty poor, I tried to translate the speakers comments. While doing a bit of research, I stumbled upon the 1976 Playboy interview. The comments of the speaker are a condensed version of the most vibrant of Bowies remarks. In the Pl.b. interv., DB appears as a boisterous, arrogant swashbuckler. It also features his conviction that political developments have to be speeded up by the implementation of totalitarian systems [which he later on distanced himself from].

  • I quit being a homosexual a long time ago. There was a time when I was 50 % gay. Now, I feel tempted only when I'm in Japan. I am never in the grips of self-doubt. I met my wife cause we were dating the same guy. Then we got married and we both went on meeting him.

  • In our job, you have to be a bastard. People are much more efficient when they are subjected to a regime. And I detest people who waste their time. In my camp, I know I'm the best. Between me and the others, there is no competition. I am a-political. Everything I say is provocative. It's a pretext to put on an act. Most of the people in my family are crazy. [I don't get this]. It would please me to assume that our madness is due to the fact that we are ingenious. But I don't think that's true.

  • hi. I'm italian, perfect, your traslation is quite perfect!

  • @antheaize what does the text say at the start on the screen? He sings this in one of the songs on LOW.

  • Gran bel video...ma ki è sto speaker del kazzo???ke rende bowie kosi cinico!!!!da badare al senso dell'arte dell'artista, e non cm komportamento da ragazzino alla sua vita!!!

  • Good video, even though I don't understand any word what narrator says.

  • He's done it all. 5/5

  • The only thing I admire other than his body and his talent is his clothing...what a great ensemble, regardless of the era!!

  • The man is flat-out sexy regardless of what he is doing!!! S E X Y !!!!

  • Sounds like a warped record.....lol.

  • RAI????

  • That song makes me feel sooo depressed. :S

  • This is Bowie at his best.

    Dum,,Dum,,Dum,,Dum...

    i love his instrumentals

    sings like a banchee too

  • it's not true, it's false! the one thing which is true he is the best!

  • It was annoying the crap out of me but by the end of the clip I figured it out- the music he plays is the background music for when he's going up the escalators in "Ricochet" the mini movie!! Its kinda sad that I know that...great clip!

  • this is ultra cool stuff, thankx a lot.

  • Vero!...fra LUI e gli altri non c'è competizione!....LUI è il più grande!

  • Is there any video of him with Fripp or Eno?

  • what year was this vid? The music has an almost haunting reminder of Claus Nomi esque ish proportions....

  • The song is from 1977's "Heroes" and this seems to be Studio Footage, so I'd say 1976/77, I'm not sure when the album was recorded exactly, but I think it was 77

  • Chazzout is correct. It was '77, so a little time prior to Bowie working with Nomi.

  • thanks guys dont know exactly why it reminded me of klaus nomi-do you know where I can find the footage of in (klaus nomi) with bowie in the granny suits? found it once on you tube yet it seems to elude me ever since..? be great if you could direct me to the correct video

  • I used to have that video up, but YT kept deleting it because it's from SNL. I could email it to you if you want.

  • oh that would be super-especially as it was my b'day I really feel my age(12 going on 15) hahaha! I mean 53 !!!

Please send the vid by email yes pretty please

  • what is SNL?

YES if you can!!please email it to me I loved it,

  • do you need my email address to email it or can it go through my youtube address - the bowie vid with klaus nomi.... Now I know why it eludes me they keep deleting it??? pfff

  • It's from Saturday Night Live, a TV show, which is why it always gets deleted. Yes, please message me your email address and I'll send it.

  • @Chunkazoota ..you can see its astudio..and not SNLstudio either...its Hansa

  • I want this "e piano" synth, looks like a mini Moog replica.

  • he's really the best!

  • Please, David, don´t ever die...

  • Yes, I hope he lives forever.

  • @kohrong dont even talk about that

  • That's one of the best outfits I've seen on him, I wish I would look that cool wearing something like that...

I love this guy so much it's not even healthy anymore! XD

  • Das ist doch einfach geil! Bowie in einem Studio in Berlin/Deutschland! Beide Daumen hoch.....

  • That was Italian, not German.

  • dont speak german but thank you. Amazing footage.

  • I don't speak German either...thank God the dude is speaking Italian! Hahaha! Honestly, LEARN YOUR LANGUAGES!!! I don't mean learn to speak them, no,no,no,no, just, ah, learn to...recognize them.

Cool vid, though what the 'narrator' (for want of a better word) says is pure rubbish.

  • David Bowie : the only man that can look serious wearing leg warmers !!!

  • @KingGrizzlebeard :O Is it leg warmers? Was thinking tights!!

    WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT VIDEO!!!!

  • I love it when Bowie wears leather!

  • oh man...italian television was another thing back than..look at this.amazing.AMAZING!!

  • very nice, thanks for posting

  • Thanks for sharing! I didn't know there existed videos from the Hansa Studios!

  • There's A LOT of footage of hansa mischraum in the depeche mode remasters. Check out the DVD-AUDIO discs (superb 5.1 mixes too!) for the triumverate of albums recorded from construction time again, onwards...

  • i was at school when this album came out so its always special to me. Loved him since 73.

  • David is the best! He is so talented!

  • bowie and eno: early perveyors of pop abmbient

  • I. Am. Fucking. Speechless.

  • I didnt know any visual was recorded at Hansa...

  • He looks sssooo beautiful....

  • holy crap, this is incredible

  • fantstic thanks for sharing this. Bowie is the best. Im surprised the pope hasnt made him a saint!

  • Fantastic!!!

  • i may not know italian (and a translation would be gladly APPRECIATED!) but at the start you can hear the voice talking about "homosexual" and "temptation". is he talking about himself or Bowie? hmm...

    Italian fans: TRANSLATE PLEASE.

  • better not to translate

    pure rubbish

I would be ashamed to translate this spoken shitty comment

I dunno if he is trying to be funny sarcatisc or whatever..it is just repulsive

  • i kind of got that idea when i heard "homosexual". what exactly is the guy talking about Bowie's sexual inclinations and things of that sort or his actual music?

how exactly is he trying to be sarcastic? i'm sorry, i know you said it'd be no use to translate it but you've actually intrigued me now.

  • Looks like he's wearing shorts and/or leg warmers with that leather jacket. He makes it work.

  • His hands are so beautiful...my perfect man..

  • ULTRA RARE. To me, Bowie is the most important artist in music history. Every artist today has something Bowie. He's done everything and there aren't many artists that can do that. I am not dismissing the many great artists out there at all. I am simply saying BOWIE is the very best. He's done, folk, rock, ambient, punk, metal, pop, drum n bass, dance, glam you name it, Bowie's done it. Anyone who discovers him for the first time will go on the most incredible musical journey in their life!

  • Completely true. He really is one of a kind, and the most important artist ever. I've only been a Bowie fan for about four years now and I can honestly say I'm pretty sure I'll be a fan for life.

  • @UTBESUX Yes, there are some artists who have been so influential that all music after carries a trace of them, and Bowie is definitely one of those artists.

  • Nevermind my previous comment, just file this one under; Viagra for Women, marketed as a marital aid. Wot!? Don't look at me! I'm just the messenger(geeeeez)

  • I so love it when mood takes over a comment and real emotion comes out instead of type. As for the film, a great song turned soundtrack for biographer dialogue? Lost in translation perhaps? But thanks (big thanks) for those who post rarities.

  • Mood schmood. Bugger my rags, I only report the facts mistah, don't shmooze the messenger... Davie represents, off da hook. Ciao darling.

  • I love you chunkazoota, this is a rare and astonishing post, the ambient instrumental side of Heroes is unrelenting beauty!!!!!Wish they had featured Brian Eno as well, being such an integral part of the project.

  • My Beautiful David Bowie...

  • 3 people agree he's yours! Is this true? Where can we get one? :)

  • W A R S Z A W A

  • Is that a text style message like L O L? I'm listening to Sense Of Doubt & have got one...

  • No, it's just part of one of Bowie masterpieces, it called Warszawa- like capital of Poland, this city inspired Bowie to cteated this tune:))

  • AHH... Warszawa! The first track on side 2 (vinyl) of LOW. I know what it is, I bought it in 1977 the day it was released. I just wondered why you mention it when we are all listening to Sense Of Doubt. hahaha slordjutka :o)
