  • they called the mien people of china yao and it means Barbarian, just for living in the mountains. which doesnt make sense since the chinese fored them to move their any ways O_o when their kingdom got taken over by the other chinese people.

  • I had a Mien woman break my heart...she was and still is beautiful.

  • @Freetime61 man I'm that happened to you. Mien people are sweet and caring so find yourself a better one :) and we make good Mien Khaosoi too

  • 新

  • mien peole are not the same as hmong. jus similar. im mien

  • Hi iprep87:

I am Mien (aka Yao which is the name used to refer to Mien people in China). I think for the hmong, miao is the term used in China to refer to them? I may be wrong.

Mien is not a part of the hmong cultural branch and do not fall under the some sub-group of hmong. Rather they fall under the same catergory as ethnic minorities of China...Mien and Hmong are quite different, please don't wrongfully assume hmong as the overarching category for ethnic groups in China.

  • true i think in china tey call hmong mui like cat...

  • @keraleec Yeah, Chinese considered Yao people the outsiders/rebellious group during expansion. However, we were granted rights by the government to roam a certain area of the mountains free from paying any fees. It's all in our history books.

    Miao means Cat in Chinese?

In Thai, they call Miao (hmong) people Mew which also means cat in their language. What is up with this pattern?

  • @CALBerkeley

Miao didn't mean cat in chinese@.@ Literally, it(苗) means little plant, but (喵)

is the onomatopoeia word for cat.

Maybe it's kinda hard for you to understand.

  • @CALBerkeley

Actually,Mienh do not equal as Yao.The classification of Chinese minority is a little complicated. 70% of Yao people are Mienh. 29% of Yao people speak the language which is more similar with Hmong than Mienh. 1% of Yao people speak the language which is similar with Zhuang, a really different languang.

In my opinion, Yao is a cultural nationality.

  • @gxbhb Thanks for your feedback. I do agree with you that within the Yao Nationality, most do speak Iu-Mienh language. The ones that speak a dialect similar to Hmong (Miao) is probably because they lived really close to Miaos? But I still don't think they are Miao. ahh How I wish I could go visit all of the minorities in China.

Do you know if within the Miao group, do they all speak Hmong? And btw do you mind me asking what ethnicity you are gxbhb?

  • @CALBerkeley

She people shared the same legend and god with us and they are considered to be ones who is most like mienh. But the language analyst result turned out to be that their language most similar to Bunu Yao, who speak the dialect similar to Hmong. I don't know whether the result is right or wrong. A lot of things cannot be explained yet. Scientists are still arguing about that.

  • @gxbhb Ohhhh....I see. I just youtube a video of the collection of the 56 groups in China. We're #13 woohoo.

Anyway, did your parents ever tell you about the contract that was written out to the Yao Mien people way back in history where we were exempt from paying any fees and doing any government work because of our ancestor King Pan?

  • @CALBerkeley

I am only half Yao... My mother is Zhuang. So they seldom tell me about that. But my grandfather asked me not to eat dog, cat and snake, which I thought might be the custom. I read about these in book, though.

I have my Y chromosome tested last year. I am M-7, haha, the most representative type of Hmong-Mienh. Could you help me upload a Yao video? There was always somethings wrong when I uploaded. I sent you message, but you didn't reply...

  • @gxbhb Also, Where do She people live? and Do you know of any videos that capture She dialogue?

  • @CALBerkeley

She people live in Fujian, east of Guangdong and south of Zhengjiang. She people in east of Guangdong are most like us. They were once recognized as Yao. But then changed into She. But they live beside hakka, their language has been affected a lot. Only some basic words remain the same.

  • @gxbhb That's cool. I know a Hakka person in America. What is Hakka? It seems like she speaks Chinese because everywhere we went in Hong kong, she spoke it well.

  • @CALBerkeley

Hakka is a dialect of Han Chinese. He move to south from the center of the China more than a thousand years ago for all kinds of reason, maily wars. After the residence in the central China has been influnced by the northern nomads. They still keep the tradition of the old days.

  • @CALBerkeley

It is considered that their language and culture have been also affect by the southern minorities, too. Such kind of influnce might be bidirectional. For example, it is hard for the researchers to analyse the relationship between the She language and Hakka language now. Ha means guest in Chinese. Because they moved from the north, to natives, they are guests.

  • @CALBerkeley

Here is a video about She people, but the dialogue is limited

    watch?v=9YSz1oLT6Fk

  • @CALBerkeley

I agree with you that Mien and Hmong are quite different. But there are still some relationship between Mien and Hmong. They are like UK and Germany, perhaps.

They may share something common long long before(I mean thousands of years ago), but we still not sure about that.

  • @CALBerkeley The most interesting part is that they believe in King Phan, too. In our legend, King Phan gave birth to 12 sons, but in their legend King Phan had only 3 sons, which represented their 3 clans:Phan, Lei, Lan. And the place of our residence is called Qianjiadong, while their is called Mount Phoenix. Expect these parts, other details of both legend are almost the same.

  • @gxbhb You're telling me that the hmongs believe in King Pan (Pien hung) also? I've never heard any of my hmong friends say that. Does their story include a metamorphic man who transforms into a dragon dog to kill the opposing King?

  • @CALBerkeley

It seemed that I made you confused. I said She people believe in King Pan. She is the name of a minority in east China. Here it's not personal pronoun.

Some of Hmongs people believed in Chiyou, a great emperor in Chinese history. He is the opponent of Huang di(Emperor Yellow). Some of them believed in their own god. The languages and cultures and beliefs of Hmongs differs from places to places in China. Miao in Hunan are totally different from Miao in Guizhou.

  • Hi iprep87:

one more thing, there are over 50 ethnic minority groups in China, and Mien and hmong are just two out of the bunch. It wouldn't be right for me or you to say any of the groups are under mine or your group's cultural branch. You just can't simply say hmong is the overarching cultural branch for these ethnic groups. It's like saying every group doesn't have their own culture when in reality they really do have distinct cultures unparallell to hmong.

    Thanks

  • @CALBerkeley

There are only there minorities in the Hmong-Mienh language branch of Sino-tebetan language family, Miao, Yao and She. I think this might reflect something. I strongly recommend you to read something about She(畲). Some researchers thought their language belong to Hmong sub-branch, while other researchers thought their language belong to Mienh sub-branch. There is no agreement on that.

  • @gxbhb Wow, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I've never heard of the She group. I will definitely look that up.

  • @CALBerkeley

She in chinese is 畲,I think that will help you to look for their information. They are

considered to be the closest nationality to us.

  • cant understand anythin, thats not mien

  • these people are not mien, i'm sure they are hmong.

  • chinese girls are so hot

  • They are the Red Yao of China. They are from the "Yao Nationality" but they don't speak Mienh, they speak a dialect that belongs to the Miao language tree.

  • How can they be Yao and speak a Maio dialect? no sense there to me.

  • these people are Mien. I can kinda understand them...but the way they use tones are very distinct...

  • If you go to china Up in the mountain this hmong miao

when you talking to them listen becareful, soem time it going to be mix in hmong & chinese

  • Hey wait the minute! That's NO Mao?!! That's the Yao people and they are known as Mien people. Thank you! :-)

  • Thanks for the correction. I edited the video description. che che.

  • My parents have taking me to china to miao village up in the

mountain. When the yao people speaking I understand

some of there words is almost relative to hmong miao

people. They speaking half yao half hmong miao language.

I know you will not know what is hmong but just to tell you that hmong is miao.
