Just because a band might have recorded one or two prog tracks accidently in their career like cliche sell out band Dream Theatre did, does not make them prog.
Technically (and yes this word is a discription not a genre) if a band writes something that cant be ristricted to a genre, its considered prog, how ever nothing states bands who have 1 or two tracks of a ceratin type can define there whole career like this. Example 1. listen to 8 dream theatre tracks... How many of them were prog? %?
Gordian knot is prog metal but only bearly. Many members who have featured or played with them come from various bands that all sound completely different.
Most of these bands fall into the prog category because they cannot be put into a genre. they combine many different genres in a single section and blend together themes like jazz musicians would.Only for these reasons would a peice be considered progressive, or (advanced/evolved) for its time.
I don't know who started calling progressive stuff "technical". Most music that is called "technical" is progressive so why try to create another subgenre...
From what I can ascertain, this is a live piece by Sean Malone using a Chapman Stick and an Echoplex, which plays loops of recorded segments of the piece on the fly. Look it up folks. Awesome. Details are in the Emergent booklet. This is beautiful.
Is this acoustic? I has an amplified guitar in it, but distortion is used judiciously, and the piece has no bass or drums. It certainly isn't metal, but is it acoustic?
so here's my crack at labeling. Gordian Knot is a prog metal band, but this song is a soft instrumental piece. I don't think this is progressive because it's in common time throughout and doesn't contain really out-of-the-ordinary chords (beautiful though). Gordian Knot is also a "technical" band, but I find it redundant to say that explicitly.
i remeber not to long ago arguing with some kid about metal subgenres, until i got sick nd tired of mentioning subgenres, from now on, imm jus saying death metal
@8thstreetdropsoulja what's a good tech band? I like prog metal/rock, and I know prog is different from tech, but the two seem to go together (both require skilled musicians). recommendations?

cuz progressive metal could suck depending on what kind of it you listen to (aka sub genre) lets say metallica was labeled as progressive metal (kindaish) but they suck...u dont wunna be know for listening to shitty bands...just good music
The ending of "Grace" is a perfect collage where all the layers fit, like pieces of a puzzle. I love listening while I'm about to sleep. Malone, Bruford and Gobel did an unforgetable album, the perfect progressive rock album.
I'm deeply sadened that this isn't much more popular. Kinda makes me think of Jon Gomm...it's pretty music.

"Progressive Technical Experimental Metal". What the actual fuck? It's progressive metal, why the fuck do you have to complicate it?
I bet when someone asks you what your favorite genre is you say "Progressive Technical Experimental Metal" to sound clever. Pretentious cunt.

Believe it or Not there is REALLY a difference between Prog Metal and Tech Metal for example
The Train of Thought CD from Dream Theater is Prog Metal
and the CD s of Spastik Ink and Spiral Architect are Tech Metal
