I remember watching a San Fransisco 49ers playoff game with my dad when I was young, probably the mid too late 80's. More than anything I remember the noise coming out of our TV. The fans where cheering so loud it sounded like they where going to blow our TV to pieces. It was a unending "WAAAWWAA WAAAAAWWWAAAA WAAAWWAAAAAA"!
You just dont hear cheering like that on a consistent basis in North America anymore.
I hope who ever that guy was on the Oilers bench with the giant hearing aid turned it down. He probably lost the rest of his hearing after that night.
I had to turn my speakers down because that crowd was so loud. It was a non-stop barrage of passionate noise.
Some fan bases are still that loud, but if people want to be totally honest, cheering at sporting events is not what it used to be. Im not saying the passion isnt there. You just dont hear raw, non-stop emotion like this anymore.
@joelrain That's very true, and no team has done even that ever since.Heck,Detroit in '97 & '98 were the last team to even win back-to-back Stanley Cups, and that's no small feat.
As an Oiler fan growing up in Edmonton, I have great memories of the team that played a very entertaining brand of hockey. But my most vivid memory of the 1988 cup occurred at 6:00 into this video.
There, did you see it? Messier wipes his nose and then shakes the commissioner's hand! The Stanley Cup had booger prints on it. Ah, beer, champagne and boogers.
i was always thinking about it as well during 80s. But maybe in this century we will see it, but I doubt that there will be any Canadian club that would win another Stanley Cup.
@ErikS1975FreeState Of course,it wasn't known at the time this would be Gretzky's last season with the Oilers. However,we find out years after the fact that the rumors started after this game ended.
It was great, and with Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi, and the other young guys the Oilers are gettting together it wont be long till the cup truly does comeback to Canada!!!
I'm not an Oilers fan, but I have so much respect for that franchise for it's reputation; with Gretzky and all the Stanley cup's he's won for them...we all know Gretzky's greatest years were when he played for Edmonton, he just had more passion playing and winning for a Canadian team lool jk
Back then players dont "throw off theyre gloves" and "Dont rip off theyre helmet" back then they were pretty calm :I But todays hockey they go nuts when they win it xD. But go Gretzky!! Best Hockey player ever to play the game.
Edmonton Oilers from 1982-92 was the best team in hockey history. In 1988 they had so many great players: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Craig Simpson, Esa Tikkanen, Craig McTavish, Kevin Lowe, Steve Smith, Charlie Huddy, Randy Gregg, Grant Fuhr...
Montreal Canadiens of the 70's are the best hockey team of all time . Sorry budy . in 76' montreal are only 10 lost in all the season . 4 straight stanley cup win in the 70 's . Lead by Guy Lafleur and all the other great legends ...
any team that beats boston has my respect. i hate boston and every team from there

it took the Oilers 5 years to win 4 Stanley Cups whereas both Montreal and the Isles won 4 straight Cups each between 1976-1983.

@landrykkb Yeah, but how many other teams won 4 stanley cups in 5 years? Not alot.

Ever since Gary Bettman took charge an American expansion team is more likely to win a cup than a great Canadian team.

It was a shame we never got a Stanley Cup Final with Montreal vs. Edmonton during Wayne Gretzky's tenure there.
