theres a reason football players have pads...because if they didnt a lot of them would get hurt every game. obviously rugby doesnt need pads because they dont hit as hard. id much rather get hit by a pro rugby player with no pads than a football player with pads. the hits are way harder in pro football. rugby is a cool sport and all...but if you took a bunch of pro football players and had them play rugby for a while then play a pro rugby team...they would destroy the pro rugby team. hands down.

What i was trying to determine is whether the game has ever been played without all the protective clothing, maybe at the birth of the game perhaps. If you took away the helmets / pads what effect would it have on the game?

im from England and i play football or soccer for americans, and while i think rugby and american football are both more physical games i think rugby is more controlled. I see where people are coming from about the pads making them pussies but tbf i think that there are bigger hits in american football and that if they didnt wear them pads then people would get injured every play, i do respect rugby players as it is a very physical game but i think american football is more demanding,

I played college football in the US, and I played pretty good club rugby in the UK.
People here are talking a lot of sh!t but in fact you are not comparing like for like. The bodily energy systems used by each athlete is different, the tackling angles are different and even where you are likely to get hit on the body is different. If a football player gets hit in the mid body area, he has no padding to protect him any more than a rugby player so it will hurt in the same way. In football however, if you play receiver you stand that chance of being leveled because you often end up in positions where you can't protect yourself. The big divider betwen the two sports is the head hits. Besides, why does rugby and Am' Football always compete, the real enemy is 'soccer; now that's a cissy sport.

But you didnt really specify which game they would be playing in this head to head match. @wiganrflcwigan a hard hit in rugby is like a normal football hit and the pads we wear in football gives us a false sense of safety so we hit harder and lots of legal hits in football would get you suspended in rugby and when you tackle someone in rugby your trying to get the ball away in football your tackle to stop them cold pretty much the main rules are no helmet to helmet,horse collar,or facemask everything else is pretty much fair game so until you play football, shut up
