Personally, though not as refined and experienced, I like Gerard better because he fit the mystery and demeanor of the phantom more and drew me in. Michael is talented but sounds like over half the broadway stars out there. Gerard was different and more memorable to me.
I like Gerard Butler's voice better. It's not as professional, but as the phantom I like it's darker feel. It's rougher, and that's how I would picture it. I tihnk ALW talked about wanting that for the movie.

Oh, joy... I cannot ever get enough of this show. Sarah and Michael in this song are pure musical perfection. I really don't know how else to praise it...

I agree...the casting is getting to young in the stage play of Phantom and making the story less credible. Butler sings terrible to "xXFootSoldierXx". I like Susan Kay's book adaptation of Phantom, it takes elements from all previous adaptations, and in that novel the Phantom first hears Christine when she is 17-19, and he is 50. As far as her hearing the Angel of Music when she was young, I think she simply imagined it while grieving for her lost father, and years later when she heard the Phantom, she just made assumed it was the Angel.
I saw a different version of this, somewhere else on youtube. It had another guy with Sarah Brightman. Man, that guy couldn't hold a candle to Michael Crawford, in the part of the Phantom. This is the best version, period!

ah the original cast that made me fall in love with the phantom of the opera. Michael Crawford was the Phantom that made me want to hear the musical over and over again on cd when i was young , and Sarah Brightmen was the first suprano that i loved to hear . The Phantom has always been my favorite musical and due to me singing along with the songs, it allowed me to discover that i had a voice. Michael Crawford sounds AWESOME in this "leigh50766" and "shock9948". He originated the role, helped design the make-up and costume, is on the best selling theatrical soundtrack of all time, has sold a lot of CDs and sold out many concerts and has been nominated for Grammy and Dove awards. You have a right to like who you want but I have seen the current person and Michael both live and Michaels singing and acting was more impressive to me. Why watch this video if you don't enjoy MCs singing.

Broadway normally does not get opera trained singers. But the POTO is so big now the Phantom is always someone with an opera training and that great chest signing. Crawford had no such training. Sorry guys, but Cawford was part of a great show and got the awards that way. You have emotional bound for him being the first. But no way is his voice equal to the current Phantom.
The sad thing "farr0222" is that you didn't even mention Michael Crawford who played opposite Brightman and won a boatload of awards. He also has a tremendous voice and is an amazing actor. I saw Michael and Hugh "Danashae" live unlike you and Michaels voice was more orgasmic, sensual, smoother and definetly makes me melt a bit more. I had the honor of seeing Sarah Brightman play the role of Christine...the movie just doesnt cut it when youve heard the woman sing live. its AMAZING. Emmy Rossum didnt do a bad job by any means, but she cant hit that High C at the end...very few people can...its Ms Brightmans role. Period.

I like Hugh Panaro best, to be honest. Michael Crawford never made me melt with his voice. Hugh makes me... well, he just moves me in a way that no other man ever has. His Phantom is dark and sensual, his voice is like chocolate. Mmm... his acting is superb as well.
The first time I ever heard Phantom was way back in 1998. I picked up the 2 disc CD and fell in love. Saw it on Broadway with Howard McGillin twice, once with Hugh Panaro, and one with an understudy who wasn't half bad.

I hated the movie. *Ducks millions of 14 year olds ready to kill her.* Gerard Butler was too handsome to be Erik. Erik is suppose to be old and ugly. It's part of why no one ever loved him, not even his Mother. Could you see that happening to someone who looked like Gerard Butler with a severe sunburn on 1/4th of their face? Honestly. Every Phantom has their ups and downs, I guess. It's all about personal taste. Michael Crawford is amazing, but Hugh is better (IMO).

I agree...the original cast was very good and Michael was the greatest Phantom I've ever seen(including all the films and stage productions). To have not used them and especially Michael Crawford who gave his heart and sole to creating the stage role, in the Webber movie, was a huge mistake. Michael won so many awards for this role and became famous the world over for it(which is extremely hard to do with a stage role)and Webber treated MC like garbage. Just doesn't make sense.

I just love "The Phantom of The Opera". I was so dissappointed that I didn't get to see it on stage. I have the actual cd with MC & SB and I just love it. As for the movie I enjoyed just as much. GB &ER were wonderful. BRAVO!!!!!!!!

I will never understand why Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman weren't cast in the movie. Those of us who live in the backwoods of rural America wanted to see the real Phantom and his love in the movie. There should have been no question about the casting. A friend recently gave me the DVD, and I will try to watch it with an open mind. I remember when the video with Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley premiered on MTV; it created such a buzz for the musical.
Like all other movies and television shows made in America, there was a lot of pressure from the Hollywood powers that be to cast a Jew in the movie - hence, we got Emmy Rossum in the lead role. That's also why so many movies are cast with terrible looking people who just ruin the movie - Hank Azaria, Jason Biggs, Jason Schartzman, Britney Murphy, Rhea Pearlman, Tyne Dally, Angelica Houston, etc.
Her voice is much too deep for the role of Christine. For most of the movie, her big, cow eyes wear an expression like they've been caught in headlights. She looks like a zombie through most of the movie. She's also too big and course to play the delicate Christine.

My daughter informed me this morning that she has seen the DVD and loves it. She's a very PICKY film reviewer because she reads all the books first. I'm going to watch it with her when she (busy teen) has time. I'm sure a live performance is always better. That's just the beauty of the theatre.
I actually think he was born disfigured, and no one wanted or loved him. It's been quite awhile since I read the novel. As an aging hippie and English teacher, I must say it's one of the classics that's truly unforgettable. I can see why it was made into such a beautiful stage extravaganza.
Don't rent the movie - that will ruin it for you. Wait till the stage production comes to your state, and then get a good seat - you will be blown away. The singing in the movie is absolutely terrible, though. It should be a crime to cast a movie the way the Phantom movie was cast.

Even though I do like Emmy and GB's version of this song, I have to admit that Sara Brightman and Michael Crawford are far more superior.
While GB's voice was deep and a little rough, adding a sexy feel to his voice, MC's voice is really smooth and silky and all around enchanting.
Both pairs did quite good in singing this song, but I personally prefer this one.

I agree...the casting is getting to young in the stage play of Phantom and making the story less credible. Butler sings terrible to "xXFootSoldierXx". Plus Michael and Sarah are singing here...not GB.

I like Susan Kay's book adaptation of Phantom, it takes elements from all previous adaptations, and in that novel the Phantom first hears Christine when she is 17-19, and he is 50. As far as her hearing the Angel of Music when she was young, I think she simply imagined it while grieving for her lost father, and years later when she heard the Phantom, she just made assumed it was the Angel.

I saw a different version of this, somewhere else on youtube. It had another guy with Sarah Brightman. Man, that guy couldn't hold a candle to Michael Crawford, in the part of the Phantom. This is the best version, period!

You raved about Sarah and Butler but didn't say a word about Mike who is the only one of the 3 that not only got nominated but won a boatload of awards for the role of the Phantom. ah the original cast that made me fall in love with the phantom of the opera. Michael Crawford was the Phantom that made me want to hear the musical over and over again on cd when i was young , and Sarah Brightmen was the first suprano that i loved to hear . The Phantom has always been my favorite musical and due to me singing along with the songs, it allowed me to discover that i had a voice. So now i hope to return the favour and play the Phantom on stage some day . Thank you MC and SB

This version, the Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman soundtrack to the show, is what first got me into the music. Then I saw the movie, and I really did love it. It's a totally different take on it, and Gerard maay be too handsome to play the Phantom, but hell, I still love it!

I respect your opinion "DeceiverOfFools87" but I have never heard or read anywhere about Webber saying anybody was the best Phantom ever. I do agree about Michael being superb though. I saw Michael as well as some different people and I respect them all. But I would only go back to Phantom if Michael Crawford returned to the role. There was just something about Michaels singing, acting and overall body language that made him the perfect Phantom to me. I also liked MCs acting better then Butlers.

I also love Henk Poort very much (the Dutch Phantom (even ALW says that he is the best Phantom ever)). But I prefer the English version, because the lyrics are much better in it.
I did enjoy Gerard version of the Phantom, but from the acting point of view. He understood the character.

Michael Crawford sounds AWESOME in this "leigh50766" and "shock9948". He originated the role, helped design the make-up and costume, is on the best selling theatrical soundtrack of all time, has sold a lot of CDs and sold out many concerts and has been nominated for Grammy and Dove awards. You have a right to like who you want but I have seen the current person and Michael both live and Michaels singing and acting was more impressive to me. Why watch this video if you don't enjoy MCs singing.

Broadway normally does not get opera trained singers. But the POTO is so big now the Phantom is always someone with an opera training and that great chest signing. Crawford had no such training. Sorry guys, but Cawford was part of a great show and got the awards that way. You have emotional bound for him being the first. But no way is his voice equal to the current Phantom.

The sad thing "farr0222" is that you didn't even mention Michael Crawford who played opposite Brightman and won a boatload of awards. He also has a tremendous voice and is an amazing actor. I saw Michael and Hugh "Danashae" live unlike you and Michaels voice was more orgasmic, sensual, smoother and definetly makes me melt a bit more. Plus Michael won a ton of awards in 3 capital cities and Hugh(know disrespect meant) copied a bunch of Michaels moves. Just my honest opinion after seeing both live

I like Hugh Panaro best, to be honest. Michael Crawford never made me melt with his voice. Hugh makes me... well, he just moves me in a way that no other man ever has. His Phantom is dark and sensual, his voice is like chocolate. Mmm... his acting is superb as well.
The first time I ever heard Phantom was way back in 1998. I picked up the 2 disc CD and fell in love. Saw it on Broadway with Howard McGillin twice, once with Hugh Panaro, and one with an understudy who wasn't half bad.

I hated the movie. *Ducks millions of 14 year olds ready to kill her.* Gerard Butler was too handsome to be Erik. Erik is suppose to be old and ugly. It's part of why no one ever loved him, not even his Mother. Could you see that happening to someone who looked like Gerard Butler with a severe sunburn on 1/4th of their face? Honestly. (Also, he can't sing. :[)

I agree...the original cast was very good and Michael was the greatest Phantom I've ever seen(including all the films and stage productions). To have not used them and especially Michael Crawford who gave his heart and sole to creating the stage role, in the Webber movie, was a huge mistake. Michael won so many awards for this role and became famous the world over for it(which is extremely hard to do with a stage role)and Webber treated MC like garbage. Just doesn't make sense.

I just love "The Phantom of The Opera". I was so dissappointed that I didn't get to see it on stage. I have the actual cd with MC & SB and I just love it. As for the movie I enjoyed just as much. GB &ER were wonderful. BRAVO!!!!!!!!

Why do you think he won every award in the book in several citys for Phantom and why do you think people still talk about his spellbinding performance today. I will never understand why Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman weren't cast in the movie. Those of us who live in the backwoods of rural America wanted to see the real Phantom and his love in the movie. There should have been no question about the casting. A friend recently gave me the DVD, and I will try to watch it with an open mind. I remember when the video with Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley premiered on MTV; it created such a buzz for the musical.

Like all other movies and television shows made in America, there was a lot of pressure from the Hollywood powers that be to cast a Jew in the movie - hence, we got Emmy Rossum in the lead role. That's also why so many movies are cast with terrible looking people who just ruin the movie - Hank Azaria, Jason Biggs, Jason Schartzman, Britney Murphy, Rhea Pearlman, Tyne Dally, Angelica Houston, etc.

My daughter informed me this morning that she has seen the DVD and loves it. She's a very PICKY film reviewer because she reads all the books first. I'm going to watch it with her when she (busy teen) has time. I'm sure a live performance is always better. That's just the beauty of the theatre.

I actually think he was born disfigured, and no one wanted or loved him. It's been quite awhile since I read the novel. As an aging hippie and English teacher, I must say it's one of the classics that's truly unforgettable. I can see why it was made into such a beautiful stage extravaganza.

Don't rent the movie - that will ruin it for you. Wait till the stage production comes to your state, and then get a good seat - you will be blown away. The singing in the movie is absolutely terrible, though. It should be a crime to cast a movie the way the Phantom movie was cast.

It's great that Butler saved a drowning kid. Michael tried the same thing when he was a kid when another kid was drowning. Awesome on both guys part "LaDrakester89". All of us can do are part everyday though to help out other people who are dying or in trouble. Michael and so many other people literally save lives everyday thru there contributions money wise or physically thru there reaching out to those in need. Like Michael said himself "we can all do something to help someone else everyday".
