not exactly IN the surf, but very shallow. on that pier, halibut can be caught from the surf to the end. Under the bobber is about five feet of line, the hook and bait on the end and a splitshot a foot from the bait to keep it near the bottom.
I can't believe he stayed on after scaring him with the net that many times. I've seen many lost that way, especially when they are bigger. I always use a pier gaff instead.
@STUPEDAS0 forgive me for replying to a year-old comment, but the net is a better idea. What if the fish turned out to be illegal? What if you gaffed an undersized hali, and a dfg warden walked right behind you and watched you pull it up?
@mmmmmarcus Hasn't happened yet. If the fish looks questionable, I button the drag and crank him. I have lost a few this way, but I feel it's better than kiling a shorty. I've seen crab nets split the tail on many shorts too which is bad news for the 'but.
hmhhh who eva tryed to net that halibut sucks... drag the halibut into the crab net head first .if its a net (the one dat looks like a spoon) lift the halibut straight up n scoop it head in first or else it will flap n then the halibut might spit out the hook.....halibut r smart....iam saying this in a nice wap so dont take this badly....
The pier boards are 1 foot a piece. @ 1:28 the halibut it lying semi diagonal and is basically across 2 boards. Definitely legal.
