This scene would have been pretty sweet if they fixed the editing a little. Also it looks like Kirk is wearing the same orbital diving costume that B'Elanna Torres wore in that one episode of Voyager which is a strange continuity.
Ahhh!........So that's where the 1994 Playmates Brand-Star Trek: Generations action figure of (retired) Captain Kirk in the spacesuit came from!......Pretty Cool!
Orbital skydiving has a large impact on the characters in the books written by William Shatner and the Reeves-Stevens. I highly recommend the books. Best to read the whole nine books. Starting with The Ashes of Eden and ending with Captain's Glory. They take you all the way from kirk's body being stolen from Viridian 3, to the mirror universe, to ..... read and find out.....
I like this, because it makes his conversation with Picard more poignant. The fact that he swore he'd never set foot on another starship? I LIKE that.
I think they got the idea of orbital skydiving from colonel Joe Kittinger who ascended to 30 km in a helium baloon and jumped.(he actually crossed the sound barrier too).
Hm, Chekov's and Scotty's final lines in this scene sound like they should be said by Spock and McCoy. Then Chekov sounds like McCoy and Scotty sounds like Spock on the bridge later on. You can't write the scene with two characters in mind, and then swap them for two other characters, while keeping the same lines! That's just sloppy.
Exactly right. The audience knows he wasn't close enough to Chekov and Scotty to spend personal time with them. Shatner should have known better. I like William Shatner, but his ego has cost Star Trek on a couple on occasions, not the least of which was Trek 5.
I kind of like hearing the three of them talk about dreading going aboard the new ship the next day. The problem lies with the whole skydiving thing. The two just don't gel. Why would Chekov and Scotty be the only ones standing in the middle of nowhere waiting for Kirk to come down. And that's when they decide to talk about the new ship? Stupid. It's a good example of a writer wanting to do something cool but failing to step back and ask if it fits with the scene.
I always wondered about the fact, how a heavy, not wanting to say "fat", guy like Kirk could have the physical condition to do all these "extreme sport" things the producers want to make believe the audience he does. When he does the freeclimbing in ST V it really started becoming ridiculous. Not to mention close combat against Klingons, which would be nearly impossible to win even for the fittest human being.
Some1 said that this scene was too outlandish to be believed. Another said that sky diving from space could not be done. I would like to point out that Capt. Joe Kittinger (no, not Kitomer) did exactly that. In 1960 he was lifted to the edge of space in a balloon where he simply stepped out of the gondola and plummeted to earth.
Jets fly between 30 to 60 thousand feet up, Kittenger was at 102,800 feet. The images he captured (black space/blue atmosphere) on his way into history are spectacular.
They used this same theme for the opening of the Voyager episode "Extreme Risk" when Belanna was orbital skydiving on the holodeck. They used parts of this scene to shoot it.
and atleast the wars prequel tried to ad something too the wars universe.
why complete a deleted scene?
the question is:why pay for a dvd that doesn't even show us how a deleted scene was going too look like! paramount wants my money but doesn't create the best version of the scene...hmm
The difference is Star Trek is a corporate franchise that with few exceptions is budgeted as tightly as possible. Star Wars is owned by one man who spends his own money. The only Star Trek movie DVD that compares to Lucasfilm in production is the Directors Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and even that is seriously inferior in picture quality to Lucas' original trilogy restoration (not talking about content changes).
I'm only criticizing the TECHNICAL quality of Star Trek DVDs compared to Star Wars DVD. Paramount doesn't want to spend the money to make Star Trek DVDs top-notch. For example, STTMP did not get a frame-by frame digital restoration to remove dust and scratches the way Star Wars did.
check out the digital bits web site , they are doing just that for all the Trek films on HD to coincide with the release of Star Trek 11, coming out next May 2009.
I remember one time that there was an action figure of James Kirk in that suit, but for some strange reason.......he was holding the rank of Admiral. I don't get that.
I was with Shatner when he dubbed the new voice-over to the Kirk/Piccard horse scene. Since it said "It's a little like orbital skydiving...." in that part (originally), they had him change it to say something like "Nothing is real. Not this or her (wife on horse) either". Anyway, it was cool to be at Bennett Innovations in the audio booth with Shatner.
I thought Kird was killed in the movie that had the Nexus thingy. THis is BS. That's why I stopped watching this show, people die, but they come backto life in later epsiodes...
I remember there being a weird action figure on the shelves at Target at the time of this movie, it was Kirk in a skydiving outfit..Now I finally see what that was supposed to be for..interesting!
Back then I had a bootleg copy of the original script and I recognized the action figure of Kirk in this outfit. I knew what was and snatched it up. I was really surprised when the scene didn't show up in the final film. It didn't even appear in the DVD extras. Scotty's lines were for McCoy and Chekov's for Spock.
SWEET! This scene was written into the novel and they even had a still from it in the book, so I knew it was filmed. They shouldn't have deleted this...thanks for posting it!
They definately should have left that one in....and Kirk definately should've opted to skydive the next day instead of the press conference....
Had he done so, not only would he have avoided being caught in the Nexus for over a century, but it would have resulted in the demise of the 1701-D crew, sparing us three more gosh-awful Trek sequels, lol!
Some may gripe that the Borg would have then changed history, but when they do that all it does is create another timeline anyway, so no big deal.
This scene would have been pretty sweet if they fixed the editing a little. Also it looks like Kirk is wearing the same orbital diving costume that B'Elanna Torres wore in that one episode of Voyager which is a strange continuity.

Except, how exactly do you make an orbital jump without setting foot on a starship? [Or maybe a spaceship != starship to his thinking.]

@josephdietrich Transporter. They transport him into space, then he uses a space-jetpack to get his 3 orbits in.
