In this particular movie, the religion was more region-based. The movie had to revolve around Kashmir in order for everything to make sense. Kashmir is currently fighting for its independence from Pakistan and India, and that is the plot as Aamir Khan plays the role of a terrorist. 90% of the population in Kashmir is Muslim.
