Of children like me that do actually appreciate the kind of idols as you do! I mean my idol is Michelle Obama I am English btw :) but I do resent the tag of stupidity that is put on young people just because of women like rhianna, Katy perry and if course the infamous miley Cyrus. But please exept that many young people have brains!
I do wonder why adults pin children like me at the age of 12 as sluts or having no social and/or intellectual skills. Yes sometimes my mum does call me cultural vacuum of course because I only found out who chuck Norris was like two days ago but don't pin the latest generation as listed above. I do see your points sometimes I mean some girls in my year are I mean...uck! But there are still a large number.....
Regarding how I know about the Sullivan Show, I have a close singer friend who appeared on the program many times and she told me about how the show was done. I also have friends at Motown who gave the same information.
And I agree with the others that this is The Ed Sullivan Show, not Clay Cole. Clay Cole (who passed away not long ago) was a wonderful institution on the New York teen music scene but his shows were noted for economy rather than lavish or inventive sets. In fact, WPIX sadly erased the tapes they had of his broadcasts in order to re use them!
I saw them doing an oldies show at the World Trade Center plaza (!) in the 1990's. They were great. It may just be my gaydar (which is never wrong) but I got the feeling they are lesbians.
@ZarahLean LOL Either way they're fabulous! At least you have gaydar! I'm a gay guy and I have NO sense of gaydar whatsoever! Frustrating! LOL! Lesbian or straight, I love these ladies! What a wonderful opportunity to see them, at the World Trade Center Plaza no less! What an amazing memory to have!
Actually the note about it being the Ed Sullivan show and not the Clay Cole show may be true. Clay Cole's show couldn't afford such a lavish set... SERIOUSLY!
Also, the Clay Cole Show had "Marcia and Kelly" ... "up in the cages" ... as Clay Cole put it, dancing their little butts off.
So did lip syncing start in the 60s? I always watch these old "live" performances, like on various variety shows ad stuff and they never have mics and the sound quality sounds exactly like the recording...
Sullivan allowed lip synching only when an arrangement for his orchestra had not yet been prepared, which was the case with the fifth performance of "Love Child." WIth "Aquarius" and five singers and a complicated instrumentation they could not get the sound balanced so resort to lip synching. Singing on this show was a nightmare. It was hard to hear the orchestra and to hear your own voice.
What do they call it when they speed up a video just enough to make room for more commercials? You are not supposed to notice but sometimes it's more apparent than others. It's that case here, either that or they just took a big blast of crystal meth.
@Eball06 They were totally hot back then! The lead singer is like 67 now I think, the other two are a couple years older. The lead was still doing recordings as recent as 2008. It'd be nice if we had women like that now more often, who didn't think they had to go around and look and act like gross sluts just to fit in with modern society!
@casatube No, its completley normal! At least you like this good music unlike that heavy metal crap that you can't even tell what they are even SAYING!
@casatube87 Actually it's weird that you ask such a weird question. This was also John Wayne's favorite song and he was straight too so don't be so nervous and insecure about your sexual preferences you big girl.
While I agree that it does look like they were lip-synching to a pre-recorded track, I must disagree with the info from the poster. I'm pretty sure Ed Sullivan required entertainers to perform LIVE on his show. At least that's how I remember it. This would make it much more likely that it is, in fact, from the Clay Cole Show.
@gjm1953 It's from Ed Sullivan, there's a clip on the net somewhere with ed's intro in tact. and besides, absolutely nothing exists of the Clay Cole show anymore.
@CenaTv2 What about the "No Lip-Synching" thing on Sullivan? Wasn't that the way he did his show? I suppose I could have imagined that, but it seems accurate to me.
@gjm1953 It was always live on sullivan. There is only a few times that things were lip synced, like "do you believe in magic" by The Lovin' Spoonfull, in which it had to be lip synced due to all the special effects and different sets that they had to stand on etc..
@CenaTv2 There were more times when artists lip-synched on Ed Sullivan. Right now I remember The Supremes in "Love Child" and The Fifth Dimension in "Aquarius" but there were many more.
@MyNozeIsFroze If you had been 18 in this era, that would make you 66 years old. I do not believe there was anything good about the good old days. Cars in those days did not have air conditioning. Boys were dying in Vietnam left and right, women were treated horribly in the workplace and if you were pregnant, there was no such thing as maturnity leave. No cell phones, facebook, or internet either. It is okay to dream though. I do it too. I would not mind time travel for one day only
The optics don't go with the lyrics! It's so weird--they look like they were somehow magically transported to this set from the Tupperware meeting in their neighbor Joanie's living room.
It's live from Sullivan with a typical E.S.O. ending. The mics were overhead like many early Sullivan shows . The clapping is coming from off-stage, the girls are clapping for effect. This was lifted from kiniscope and the timing goes off in the
transfer. This is 100% live with Sullivans orchestra backing.
You would think they'd look like the Shangri Las, not the Chordettes...you'd think so, and you would be WRONG, bong breath!!! (I'm so old, I'm hoping somebody gets a Johnny Carson reference!)
@LaoSoftware they didnt have a SHITLOAD of hormones in the food... nor did they have plastic surgery. nor did they have fast food places everywhere and lazy americans.lol
@Donnelly182 Don't worry. Blink 182 did not record this song. It is falsely labeled on the internet. It has been falsely attributed to Blink 182 ever since file sharing began. The supposed Blink 182 version has a totally different sound than typical Blink 182. With the true Blink 182 cover songs, they play it in their style with their amps and instruments, and the supposed Blink 182 version is clearly not their style and with different instruments and amps.
Most groups then and now have prerecorded tracks without vocals, but I'm 99% sure this wasn't the case....Notice they didn't have vocal mics, which means that if they would have sung live to a prerecorded track they would use overhead area microphones which also means as they would move forward, backward or whatever, you would hear perceptible changes in both their vocal volumes and the blends of their harmonies...if the track was off, it would always be off but her lip sync fluctuates
@TheRudeman50 OK, taking all your good points on board....how does one explain the way her voice does change in the spoken intro when she puts the phone down, and the noise the phone makes? I wonder if perhaps the spoken bit is live, but the rest isn't? For whatever reason. Perhaps to give something for people decades later to talk about! Otherwise they would have had to put the phone clunk on the soundtrack, which seems unlikely to me.
@nearlyoutofideas I think you are right about the song was pre - recorded but the spoken intro was live - as I believe that the track would've been recorded by the TV staton for miming - just like Procession did for Uptight.
@nearlyoutofideas On my original VHS "Girl Groups," this clip is perfectly in synch. Makes you wonder... and most kids with garage Band on their imacs have better recording facilities than anyone did in 1963 eh ? '; )
it's most definitely prerecorded---take it from a lifelong musician who's done these shows...They often had several prerecorded versions for TV ---Check their lips are way out of sync in some parts especially in the scat section.....also the claps are not in perfect time to the track . ....the part where they go out of tune is tape warp.....the whole tune goes wonky
@TheRudeman50 OK, you've made me think now! Is it possible that the backing was pre-recorded but the vocals are live? I assume that was do-able in 1963. That would explain things like pre-recorded handclaps but still hearing the clunk of the phone at the start.
@TheRudeman50 Re the vocals and syncing - it's possible the program I used put them just a little bit out of sync (not enough to generally notice but maybe there) - and I have a theory re the scat bit where the sound goes wonky. I suspect the picture must have done so as well, and whoever did this video covered it up by inserting excerpts from earlier in the clip. Hence looking like they're singing different bits.
Such is my theory. Yes, I do like to over think things!
Please , look at what you are looking at. If you just want to hear the music, go to 45rpm or original version. Never go to any cover group as they are not the original performers.
Oh come on, please don't start! On the American Dreams version of this song there is an rude, offensive, homophobic, anti women's/civil rights, and heated arguement going on in the comments. Guess how it started! A comment like yours!
this song really tickles my fahGINA that is all..

With the true Blink 182 cover songs, they play it in their style with their amps and instruments, and the supposed Blink 182 version is clearly not their style and with different instruments and amps.

A #1 hit for The Angels in September 1963.

JimmyBoi2 5 months ago
it's most definitely prerecorded---take it from a lifelong musician who's done these shows...They often had several prerecorded versions for TV ---Check their lips are way out of sync in some parts especially in the scat section.....also the claps are not in perfect time to the track . ....the part where they go out of tune is tape warp.....the whole tune goes wonky
TheRudeman50 6 months ago
@TheRudeman50 OK, you've made me think now! Is it possible that the backing was pre-recorded but the vocals are live? I assume that was do-able in 1963. That would explain things like pre-recorded handclaps but still hearing the clunk of the phone at the start.
nearlyoutofideas 6 months ago
