What is interresting is that Wales or Cymru have managed to hold on and (I´ve been told) even expand their real language unlike their celtic brethren Scotland and Ireland despite the fact it has been occupied far longer not to forget that Ireland is now a "free" nation and STILL their celtic speaking population is diminishing!
@TheShadowwolf88 Thats partly because Scotland as it is today, never 'spoke scottish' as a whole. Parts of lowland Scotland (Kingdom of Strathclyde etc) actually spoke Brythonic, or 'very old' Welsh well into the 'dark ages'... The Scotish language came much late with the invading Irish, but many 'scots' never spoke Gaelic. Welsh language 'retreated' from the bulk of the Island of Great Britain, to what is now Wales, so the linguistic history of both nations are very different
@TheShadowwolf88 ~2~Until recently, the highlands & Islands of Scotland, as part of the Pictish Kingdoms [PRE Irish~'Scots' invation] were thought to speak a non Brythonic language, but that is now being reviewed. There is some indications they spoke a Brythonic dialect & might go some way to explain why modern Scotland is linguistically very different to Wales, or indeed England; swathes of which also spoke 'Welsh' until Henry VIII got his way and 'standardised' his Kingdom.
@ianww8 I read something about Cornwal that the english overlords felt "threatened" by the people speaking a language that they could not(or refused to learn) speak themselves!
Maybe that is what happened much to Scotland and I KNOW they did it to Ireland (except the parts that allready spoke a mix of "norse" english)!
@TheShadowwolf88 Te Irish issue is much later in time, & down to the Normans, yes. Cornwal retained its version of Brythonic to an extent, until the 20th century, but time, migration &overlordship took its toll, just like it did in much of Wales. Scotland would have had Brythons, Gaels, Angles, Saxons, Jutes(?!), Viking and Norman influences, so the indigenous Brythonic language had a lot to compete with. That said, 'Welsh' was spoken there until the 8th Century at least.
@TheShadowwolf88 Welsh is yes, for sure. There are Welsh speaking communities allover the world in various pockets. The main one being in Patagonia, where the welsh speakers there are bilingual Welsh and Spanish, few of them have any English language at all.
Brythonic is the British language from which Welsh derived from, so whilst Welsh is the surviving dialect of Brythonic, we wouldnt call it by that name these days.
@TheShadowwolf88 Forgive my inquisitiveness, but, how/why does a person living in Sweden (I presume from your profile) have such knowledge and intrest in Wales and ancient Britain? Its nice to see, because many people here are less aware of the things you seem to take an intrest in, and as for the ignorance in wider Britain of their heritage - best not go there! lol
@TheShadowwolf88 Ah, Camelot... that's a thesis in its self! lol. So, perhaps having an intrest in other countries is a Scandinavian instinct? (joke!). Although, its fair to say that most people, the Welsh included arent aware that our existance & so our identity today can partly be attributed to Viking support! The Welsh Kings used Viking mercenaries from Ireland to help us keep the Norman-English at bay, which is why Wales wasnt conquored for over 200 after England fell in1066
@ianww8 The danish invasion and more or less conquest of England durinf the Viking age that slowed english ambitions down! And if the norwegians many centuries later had succeded against against Harold or had shown up just after the normans England would have been too weak to even resist both the welsh and scottish then the fight for british supremacy might have been between Scotland and Cymru and possibly Eire as well with England being that area being passed as a warprice between them!
@TheShadowwolf88 Yes, I'm sure the current situation could well have been so very different, here, but the same could be said of Europe and elsewhere, if only one or two events in history concluded even slightly differently; Thats why history is so interesting I think! The only problem with history though, is that a lot of it is changed to suit the writers of it. Whoever thought political 'spin' was a modern concept has clearly not read history! lol.
@ianww8 very very interesting language and culture. hungary and even estonia as well the "true elites" without sounding snobby but yes cymru is not forgotten...it will not be in vain as the saying goes when the drink flows...me? veggies...cymer ofal
@ianww8 Henry VIII is similar to a couple of swedish kings that did the same thing wich is one of the reasons we have the IDIOT accent called "rikssvenska" (="royalswedish")!
@TheShadowwolf88 I met a really nice Sweedish man last year who told me lots about your language issues - interesting and reassuring to know were not alone in this. English is such a strong language worldwide, its amazing that Welsh survived in its shadow at all. As for HenryVIII, he actually 'killed' Welsh speaking areas within England and tried (but failed) to do the same in Wales. Pity, because he was part Welsh, & his father couldnt speak English properlyl!
I'm American partly of Welsh ancestry. I really wonder if it was intentional that Anthony Hopkins was cast in Red Dragon! Haha But Hollywood thinks that way...
Im welsh, and PROUD X tbh, the welsh have gorgous accents, Im from swansea, its beautiful, where we live the water is so clear, we have amazing stories were all proud to be welsh thats what we are like, Did a tear come to your eye? :L Well people make fun of us, but... their jelous :} x
its too bad england was intent on investing in itself rather than scotland and look whats still happening there. they're blaming scottish unity on a hollywood movie but why not blame the infiltrative schemes on english thuggery? cymru needs to modernise for the future and with celtic-help can do it. its human nature to be at odds but not to the point of Not doing sound business. all races are equal this is not racialism its True Unity
@troddsy I'm Welsh and proud, but I dont recognise the picture your painting there at all! I think you may have been influenced by Nationalistic, and anti-English propeganda?! Sure the English can be ignorant of its fellow Brits at times, and yes, history was brutal, but that's true of both sides. The scotish identity portrayed by many (including the scots) like for other cultures, is often fabricated and clothed in bullshit. I'd be interested to know what 'celtic help' you advocate
not about subjugating england since they are subjugating themselves now! scotland is covering its own costs with "north-oil" and jobs are being created as we speak a bit like watching estonia gain the upper hand against russia financially speaking. its no wonder that a possibility of a great link-up w/scotland can occur and put a better face on the economy. face it wales is a better tourist destination than england.
cymru simply sounds better too invest in Yourselves now
@troddsy Again, I dont recognise any of what youre saying here! If what you say is true, why is it that most visitors to the UK, dont get outside of London, let alone the M25!
Are you an anarchist perhaps?! If so, what is your agenda?! If you knew anything about the politics and the economy here, you'd see that comparatively, whilst there is always room for improvement, Wales is doing OK as it is without the revolution you seem to be suggesting; thank you!
We are not "welsh" - we are Cymric. Our island is not britain or the uk it is PRYDAIN. england is a misnomer for our land stolen by the continents pirates, theives and refugees.
@blockthehood No need to be racist, just because he is spouting a load of Nationalistic clap trap! I'm Welsh and proud, I'm also proudly British, and so like most of us, I dont hold the views he's expressed, so please, dont use my nationality as a put down term, even though I agree with everything else you said about him! Thanks.
You said " We are not "welsh" - we are Cymric" - Errrm... Isn't 'Cymric' an obsolete alternative to the word 'Cymraeg'? I must confess I'd never heard anyone ever use it until now.
Shouldn't you have said "we are Cymry"?
Or is Cymric perhaps shorthand for 'Cymry Cymraeg'?
@ioanthechurchgoer Thankfully, your views are a minority amongs us Welsh! Before you spout off your bigoted hatered like that in a public forum, I strongly suggest you read ancient history, and study Pre-history to get a proper understanding of the complicated patchwork that were the tribes of Britain! Hopefully, your just a troll, and not for real!
The Ley Lines of Wales connect to the Ley Lines and energies of the northern Netherlands, and in the West, to USA Oregon. The UK's energy structures are a farce. This indicates ancient earthquakes at the Great Flood.
Wales: The Best
Oregon: The Few
Oregon is "the few who are best." Wales is "Few are Better." And none in England.
@Radonb0y Mate, Wales IS part of the UK - and what youre talking about with Noah etc (presumably) is complete nonsense and at utter odds with scientific evidence - just like your 'lay-line' hypothesis. Unproven pseudo science! This thread is about the Welsh National Anthem, and not a platform for you to pontificate about your discredited beleif system!
Fuck you dickhead. who gives a fuck about the size of the country. its still a great fucking country you cock sucking piece of shit ! look at switzerland. its small and its a country even though they speak douche(deuschte, but i hate germans nd germany) and french. if u hate wales soo fucking much dont bother with the people who are welsh and or enjoy the country.
wales isnt a country! you were conquered by england years ago and are in fact a principality like monaco! this is the reason the scots are allowed their own parliament while you only get an assembley.
also our language killed your language (and many others)- which i actually believe is a shame as it is a beautiful language
@elbeavo11 a language spoken by only a few thousand as a 2nd language when it was spoken by a nation in the past is a dying language is not dead. also you dont have to conquer an entire country to make its rulers give in and surrender the rest of the land
@elmateeeo plenty of people speak it as a first language and alot more people are starting to in reasent years..... it growing once more. and we never surrenderd
@elbeavo11 growing?? lol what from 3000 to 4000? i know wales doesnt have many people but the shear fact the number of people able to converse in welsh is less than 150,000 makes it a dead language- england was smart and has got the world talking its language so we dont have to learn anything else. the welsh signed a treaty giving power to the english this is basically a surrender
@elbeavo11 but your rulers did and they signed a treaty to give power over all of wales to the english- it doesnt really matter anyway we are all governed by the people in london
@elbeavo11 In the 13th century, the defeat of Llewelyn by Edward I completed the Anglo-Norman conquest of Wales and brought about centuries of English occupation. Wales was subsequently incorporated into England with the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542, creating the legal entity known today as England and Wales.
from wikipedia- sorry i dont like it as a source usually but the history of wales isnt easy to find on the internet- we are basically part of the same country
Anglo Norman! You need to read a good history book and learn that Edward I was not in any way 'Anglo'. He was Norman French. He didn't speak any form of English at all. He had more land in France.
Do you not know that Henry VIII was the son of Henry VII who was - guess what - Welsh and whose native tongue was Welsh, then French and then English. Henry VIII also could connverse in Welsh.
There hasn't been an English (Angle) monarch on the throne of England (Angle land) since 1066.
@elbeavo11 - With Llywelyn's death and his brother prince Dafydd's execution, the few remaining Welsh lords did homage for their lands to Edward I.
there your as english as i am wales might as well be considered as apart from england as kent! you have your own cultural identity and see that as proof you are a country- but dont forget essex, liverpool etc have their own different cultural identities as well
@emROARS ok but almost none of them use welsh as their first language. anyway those figures show the welsh language is dying, im guessing 90% of those abroad are in england
@elmateeeo almost none? So i'm guessing the ten towns as well as my own arn't speaking Welsh as a first language but a languages altogether different?
Those figures are not showing it's dying. There's been a 20% increase in the last 10 years, which is alot bloody better. I wonder, do you know why Wales even started adding English into their speech? Hmm...And yes around 75% of outside is from outside wales. The other 25% are from Welsh colony around the world, mainly from Chubut, Argentina.
@emROARS welsh colonies? you must have worded that wrong cos wales is an english colony (basically) i know there has been an increase but that has been mainly amongst the elderly and small villages using welsh is no different from the village in cornwall which speaks cornish. all small languages are being killed off by english its just a fact
@emROARS no thats not right what i meant by wales being a colony of england isnt entirely correct but it isnt entirely untrue either. wales was conquered by england centuries ago and wales rulers gave power to the english monarchy this has never changed. scotland has its own parliament while wales is only allowed a far less powerful assembley. also english is killing off many small languages (maybe not welsh yet) but it is a concern for small populations such as the welsh speaking population
You are monumentally ignorant! Go and live in Gwynedd or Dyfed before you spout off such unmitigated bilge. The number of fluent Welsh speakers is now well in excess of 600,000 and growing. I'm talking about people who use the language on a daily basis.
I never spoke English to my parents and only ever speak English to my siblings if there are non-Welsh speakers present. And that is by far the norm throughout Gwynedd and Dyfed.
@elmateeeo the fact is that the english language itsef is dying=it is now the whore language of the world! not a bad thing in itself but no country can claim the language as its own now,its always been a mongrel language anyway=over half of english words are stolen from french ,german, dutch and danish
You are ill informed. Wales was conquered by the Norman French Edward I - and although who was not an Englishman in any way you think. He was the great great great grandson of William the Conqueror the Norman who conquered what you think of England (land of the Angles - Angleterre) 200 years before Edward conquered significant areas of Wales. Edward didn't speak English or any variant of English, he spoke Norman French.
"our language killed your language" - how old are you? 12?
@elmateeeo Well if you want to get really technical &accurate about these things - Henry VII won the war of the roses, & took the English crown with a WELSH army. He was half Welsh, half French, NOT English. His son, Henry VIII united Wales and England in 1536 by the act of Union to form the single country of 'England & Wales', which is a country that comes under the Kingdom of England (Country & Kingdom is quite distinct) . Wales is a principality of the Kingdom, NOT the country!
Ahh I love Wales, it's great place with great people!
If a country as small as Iceland with its 250,00 people can make it on its own then there's no reason Wales can't! I'm not advocating independence I'm just stating facts.
i fukin hate english cunt who say wales is part of england. i mean why would we want to be part of that shit hole .. half of the fukin country hates the other half!! atleast we have summin to have proud of!!
I for one am sick to death of the English telling us they know best for us here in Wales!
They said exactly the same for Ireland when they endured centuries of poverty, famine and mass emmigration as part of the union- yet today, running their own affairs they're the second richest country in Europe.
Now it is Wales who're one of the poorest countries in Europe, with Portugal & Cyprus having a higher standard of living.
- just like Ireland it'll not get better till we're independent.
Wales' GDP would plummit even further is we were not part of the UK. Don't you see, our standard of living is bolstered by English taxes..to say it is worse than Cyprus' and Portugal's is incorrect. Our GDP may be less, but because we are part of the UK we share the public pot with England...so the same money for hospitals, schools etc. Try running a national health service on our own...it would be 3rd world-like.
If we gain so much from London rule as you claim, tell me the last major infrastructure investment the union funded in Wales?
Is it any wonder we have a such a low GDP when businesses wanting to invest in Wales have one of the highest tax rates in the world combined with one of the worst infrastructures in Europe?
Welsh money has helped build HS1, Cross rail, Jubillee line extension, DLR, 6 tramlines, the olympics, T5, etc
How the hell have we gained by letting London run our country?
@richardeast you are poorer than england because you get back what you put in. cutting ties with the power of england would be disastarous for you as you are a tiny speck of a nation and could not survive by yourself. just think about it why should a region that contributes little to the UK get more back? on the other hand scotland does so i expect all the little regions think the same.
PS- wales is not a country its a principality- this makes independance extremely unlikely
The only polls which show a support for the union tend to be paid for by organisations with a vested interest for having London rule continue over us; the BBC, the London government, etc.
Independent polls usually show a vast majority (70%+) want fully law making powers here and often a majority want independence.
None of my mates want London rule to continue.... Because why should a political union based outside our borders run the cocuntry on our behalf?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am Welsh with Welsh parents and have lived in Wales all my life. Most educated people I know, in fact nearly all, want Wales to remain with the Union.
And you're wrong with your poll figures. Polls consistantly suggest that only 10-20% want independence.
It's more than a political union. It's one nation. London is part of my country.
humm - quick search and I see you post on the Three Lions by Lightning Seeds talking about England being the 'national' team.
Even those of us here in Wales who, like me, wish England well at the world cup would be at a push to call them the 'national' team.
There's a debate to be in Wales on the future of the country.
...and I'm touched you want to come on youtube and pretend to be Welsh... but neighbour has stuck their nose into neighbours affairs too much on this island.
@WelshNotBrits we are British! check your history. the Welsh, Scottish(after the picts, from Scotland, and the Scots, from Ireland intermarried) and the Cornish all occupied the whole of Britain until the Romans left. after the departure of the Romans, the Saxons attacked from the north and pushed the Welsh into Wales, Cornish into Cornwall and the Scots up north. the Saxons the settled in central Britain and later intermarried with the angles who came again from Scandinavia.

@WelshNotBrits the welsh were the original britons where do you think the word comes from...its a latin root word from romans calling the tribal brythons (ancestors of cornish and welsh) = british
@WelshNotBrits Actually, wouldn't you say that you're more British than the English? I'm pretty sure "Wales" and "Welsh" used to mean something like "foreigners."
@irishfigroll I've just seen your post, after saying exactly the same thing myself - nice one and yes, we were! The Irish name for Wales, says it all I think! :~)
@WelshNotBrits I disagree! We are the ORIGINAL Brits, that's all. Welsh is an English term for us, who their ancestors regarded as 'outsiders'. I'm Welsh, but I'm also British - passionately so! :~)
@UilliamPolDeBrun Lle ddiawl ges ti'r frawddeg yna? o 'google translate'?! Ers pryd da ni'n deud 'rhiw ona'?! lol. Os ti isho deud rhiwbeth tebyg i'r rheg seisnigaidd yna yn y Gymraeg - ti angen deud rhiwbeth fel, '...dos i gachu!' tyda ni ddim yn defnyddio'r term 'rhiw ona'... Byth! Hwyl :~)
we speak english to YOU cos thats all u lot speak lol. 21% of Welsh people speak welsh, and there are 100 000 welsh speakers in England. the numbers only dropped cos about 100 years ago, england forced all schools in wales to teach in english and forced their language upon us. but numbers of Welsh speakers are going up again now.
Je peux parle francais tres bien et je me suis enseigné.
everyone is so prejudice towards the english which is beginning to piss me off because theres 57 million of us. how many are there of you?? about 3 million and does it honestley matter if u go independent cos were not independent and were not cunts because the english dont even decide what the queen decides. and its not our fault we took over wales that was our ancestors NOT US
My grandfather joined up to the Guards in 1939. He was the second generation of my family to speak English, he speaks Welsh too. But, some of his friends only spoke Welsh. They found life hard and were sometimes punished for "disobeying" orders, because they didn't understand the English language. People who had chosen to join up to fight for their country. I'm glad that the Welsh language is on the rise again, even if I don't speak a word of it. Cymru am byth.
I do watch Pobol y Cym from time to time though... I don't understand a word, but it's good to know it's there! BTW amazing how there's no Hollywood movies about the Welsh, yet have they seen the sheer number of castles in Wales?! All built to keep just one generation of the Welsh under control!
Maybe united on paper, but genetically you are different. No argument about that. The english came from germany and the netherlands etc. And quite honestly: I hate this "we are one" takings - even in the other parts of europe. We all live on the same planet but thsi doesn ot make us all the same: and honestly: I rather die than seeing everyone being the same. (I'm not talking about law). That would be HELL. it's the differences which make us to who we are..
I'm afraid the welsh assembly has very little power and the welsh nation very little chance of independence. This is because the key factors that would make wales a successful nation state are not there. That isn't to say the factors that make a country are not there, of course they are. But in the words of Saunders Lewis "There is much more to nationalism than the defence of language and literature". Wales will never be a nation state until it can support itself.
the Welsh should consider the territory of England to be empty and free for them to begin to settle and plant their schools, their language and culture.
xhris94... Cymru is not jealous of England, but the English should respect more the people of Cymru/Wales. All of us shall remember and honor where the own roots are
england raped Cymru of all our resources and flooded our towns for drinking water. So to be honest england would be nothing without wales. TWLL DU POB SAIS! CYMRU AM BYTH.
the welsh are just jealous. england is a large well known international country, whereas wales is just a small country tagging along that not many people outside of europe have heard of. wales would be nowhere without england in the united kingdom
Yeah xhris...You keep telling yourself that. But i have a question for you.Why is it some parts of Europe thought so poorly of the UK?The answer=England. Its because of england that the uk has received abuse i guess you could say from the rest of europe. You know what i would do if i was president of the UK?Kick England out.cymru am byth.
Wales is perfectly capable of of surviving without England.we had done for many years. We do not require the english to live.I would bet you,say £100 that Wales could survive perfectly well without England.Cymru am byth.
lol youre a retarded angry man, nice to see that you accept that wales in a nicer country to look at, and by the way you English are the pompus idiotic country of britain, why have you got more power? because of money, where did you get youre money? frm buisness and allot of youre buisness comes from the backbones of the wlesh, irish and scottish also you forget that we fought as a nation in the war if ENGLAND didnt have the support of the fellow British countrys it would be nothing but rubble
seriously, try and show some respect for the hundredes of thousands of welsh, scottish and irish soldiers that have died in wars decided upon in london ,if you cant do that you really are a cunt
Yes it does, to an extent, our Assembly has very little power has it is....... But, the EU makes 80% of British laws, which means they are our laws aswell.
i'm for it as well. i'm for a proper parliament though. and to be honest i don't put alot of stock in all these estimates of how much of our law is "made" by the EU. the thing i am against is blind patriotism. you cannot run a state on choirs, rugby and laver bread, to paraphrase Gwynfor Evans. nor can wales continue to cling to farming and fishing. i look at this place and see vast potential in renewable energy and tourism. but people don't seem to want it.
mate your english, the biggest lick as of the world when the yanks goes to war the britsih goverment witch is ENGLISH goes right in there just remeber always shit on the english side of the bridge Cymru am byth
yeah sure. thats the english government, nothing the english people can do about it. we're against our involvement with america as much as you are. and by the way, the leader is SCOTTISH. fag
septimivs - glad to see someone is right, Welsh, Irish and Scots are the true Brits (Blythons) which is the name the Romans gave us to, meaning foreigners (i heard to be true correct if wrong) but again the saxons/english came and stole everything. make you think... did england acctually make history by not trying to steal from others??
Hello SeanyBadger, the word Welsh comes from the germanic "welsch" which in fact means "foreign". You can find similar words, like Wallonie (Belgium) and Wallis/Vallis (Switzerland).
The irony of this, is that "they" are foreigners!!!
What the so called English is concerned, they are in fact a mixture of Britons/Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans. Actually in every Englishman there are many drops of Celtic blood. I think peolple should trink a beer or a wine together, instead of arguing.
If wales is better than the other british nations them the pope has more chance of turning muslim lol. Nah if its the best then explain to me how it has got the lowest tourist that visit it in europe and 2/5 of the welsh are obese. Yeh sounds great, a fiver to get to that shithole.... I'd rather eat razer blades.
All in all this is a very beautiful song in one of the most beautiful languages in the world(old norse/Icelandic would be the second)!

@ianww8 Henry VIII is similar to a couple of swedish kings that did the same thing wich is one of the reasons we have the IDIOT accent called "rikssvenska" (="royalswedish")!
TheShadowwolf88 1 month ago
@TheShadowwolf88 I met a really nice Sweedish man last year who told me lots about your language issues - interesting and reassuring to know were not alone in this. English is such a strong language worldwide, its amazing that Welsh survived in its shadow at all. As for HenryVIII, he actually 'killed' Welsh speaking areas within England and tried (but failed) to do the same in Wales. Pity, because he was part Welsh, & his father couldnt speak English properlyl!

Its a constituent country of the UK. Cymru is the Welsh name for its self. Wales is located between England and Ireland.

I'd be interested to know what 'celtic help' you advocate
ianww8 1 month ago
not about subjugating england since they are subjugating themselves now! scotland is covering its own costs with "north-oil" and jobs are being created as we speak a bit like watching estonia gain the upper hand against russia financially speaking. its no wonder that a possibility of a great link-up w/scotland can occur and put a better face on the economy. face it wales is a better tourist destination than england.
cymru simply sounds better too invest in Yourselves now

@troddsy Again, I dont recognise any of what youre saying here! If what you say is true, why is it that most visitors to the UK, dont get outside of London, let alone the M25!
Are you an anarchist perhaps?! If so, what is your agenda?! If you knew anything about the politics and the economy here, you'd see that comparatively, whilst there is always room for improvement, Wales is doing OK as it is without the revolution you seem to be suggesting; thank you!

Or is Cymric perhaps shorthand for 'Cymry Cymraeg'?

Wales is not UK.
The Ley Lines of Wales connect to the Ley Lines and energies of the northern Netherlands, and in the West, to USA Oregon. The UK's energy structures are a farce. This indicates ancient earthquakes at the Great Flood.

Oregon: The Few
Oregon is "the few who are best." Wales is "Few are Better." And none in England.

wales isnt a country! you were conquered by england years ago and are in fact a principality like monaco! this is the reason the scots are allowed their own parliament while you only get an assembley.
also our language killed your language (and many others)- which i actually believe is a shame as it is a beautiful language

@elmateeeo for a start the language isent dead..... and the english never conqured all of Wales
elbeavo11 1 year ago
@elbeavo11 a language spoken by only a few thousand as a 2nd language when it was spoken by a nation in the past is a dying language is not dead. also you dont have to conquer an entire country to make its rulers give in and surrender the rest of the land
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo plenty of people speak it as a first language and alot more people are starting to in reasent years..... it growing once more. and we never surrenderd
elbeavo11 1 year ago
@elbeavo11 growing?? lol what from 3000 to 4000? i know wales doesnt have many people but the shear fact the number of people able to converse in welsh is less than 150,000 makes it a dead language- england was smart and has got the world talking its language so we dont have to learn anything else. the welsh signed a treaty giving power to the english this is basically a surrender
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo not the whole of Wales surrenderd get over it

@elbeavo11 In the 13th century, the defeat of Llewelyn by Edward I completed the Anglo-Norman conquest of Wales and brought about centuries of English occupation. Wales was subsequently incorporated into England with the Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542, creating the legal entity known today as England and Wales.
from wikipedia- sorry i dont like it as a source usually but the history of wales isnt easy to find on the internet- we are basically part of the same country
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo
There hasn't been an English (Angle) monarch on the throne of England (Angle land) since 1066.
twmapsion 1 year ago
@elbeavo11 - With Llywelyn's death and his brother prince Dafydd's execution, the few remaining Welsh lords did homage for their lands to Edward I.
there your as english as i am wales might as well be considered as apart from england as kent! you have your own cultural identity and see that as proof you are a country- but dont forget essex, liverpool etc have their own different cultural identities as well

chrisjoneschrisjones 1 year ago
@elmateeeo Actually the amount of speakers in wales is 611,000 while there's 200,000 abroad.
emROARS 1 year ago
@emROARS ok but almost none of them use welsh as their first language. anyway those figures show the welsh language is dying, im guessing 90% of those abroad are in england
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo almost none? So i'm guessing the ten towns as well as my own arn't speaking Welsh as a first language but a languages altogether different?
Those figures are not showing it's dying. There's been a 20% increase in the last 10 years, which is alot bloody better. I wonder, do you know why Wales even started adding English into their speech? Hmm...And yes around 75% of outside is from outside wales. The other 25% are from Welsh colony around the world, mainly from Chubut, Argentina.
emROARS 1 year ago
@emROARS welsh colonies? you must have worded that wrong cos wales is an english colony (basically) i know there has been an increase but that has been mainly amongst the elderly and small villages using welsh is no different from the village in cornwall which speaks cornish. all small languages are being killed off by english its just a fact
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo Ok, I see that your just a troll. I'm sorry to waste your time.
But if you took the time to research, then maybe you would actually realise that your completely incorrect.
emROARS 1 year ago
@emROARS no thats not right what i meant by wales being a colony of england isnt entirely correct but it isnt entirely untrue either. wales was conquered by england centuries ago and wales rulers gave power to the english monarchy this has never changed. scotland has its own parliament while wales is only allowed a far less powerful assembley. also english is killing off many small languages (maybe not welsh yet) but it is a concern for small populations such as the welsh speaking population
elmateeeo 1 year ago
@elmateeeo
Get an education.
twmapsion 1 year ago
@elmateeeo the fact is that the english language itsef is dying=it is now the whore language of the world! not a bad thing in itself but no country can claim the language as its own now,its always been a mongrel language anyway=over half of english words are stolen from french ,german, dutch and danish
chrisjoneschrisjones 1 year ago
@elmateeeo

- just like Ireland it'll not get better till we're independent.
richardeast 2 years ago 12
@richardeast
Try running a national health service on our own...it would be 3rd world-like.
cnavaro88 2 years ago

No they;re not. 80% of Wales support the Union, according to the polls.
cnavaro88 2 years ago
I'm guessing you're not Welsh.
Because why should a political union based outside our borders run the cocuntry on our behalf?
maxfm83 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I am Welsh with Welsh parents and have lived in Wales all my life. Most educated people I know, in fact nearly all, want Wales to remain with the Union.
And you're wrong with your poll figures. Polls consistantly suggest that only 10-20% want independence.
It's more than a political union. It's one nation. London is part of my country.
cnavaro88 2 years ago
humm - quick search and I see you post on the Three Lions by Lightning Seeds talking about England being the 'national' team.
Even those of us here in Wales who, like me, wish England well at the world cup would be at a push to call them the 'national' team.
There's a debate to be in Wales on the future of the country.

Wales will never be a nation state until it can support itself.

i'm for it as well. i'm for a proper parliament though. and to be honest i don't put alot of stock in all these estimates of how much of our law is "made" by the EU. the thing i am against is blind patriotism. you cannot run a state on choirs, rugby and laver bread, to paraphrase Gwynfor Evans. nor can wales continue to cling to farming and fishing. i look at this place and see vast potential in renewable energy and tourism. but people don't seem to want it.

septimivs - glad to see someone is right, Welsh, Irish and Scots are the true Brits (Blythons) which is the name the Romans gave us to, meaning foreigners (i heard to be true correct if wrong) but again the saxons/english came and stole everything. make you think... did england acctually make history by not trying to steal from others??
SeanyBadger 2 years ago
Hello SeanyBadger, the word Welsh comes from the germanic "welsch" which in fact means "foreign". You can find similar words, like Wallonie (Belgium) and Wallis/Vallis (Switzerland).
The irony of this, is that "they" are foreigners!!!
What the so called English is concerned, they are in fact a mixture of Britons/Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans. Actually in every Englishman there are many drops of Celtic blood. I think peolple should trink a beer or a wine together, instead of arguing.
