The lake assoc. president was told days before this to lower the level of the water but refused numerous times in the two weeks proir to the breach of the dam. now they want tax payers to flip the bill... Get Bent. in it's rivers natural state there is no risk of flooding down stream leave it the way God made it
People that have never been to Iowa don't know how to pronounce Maquoketa. I love to hear how they pronounce Des Moines on the national news. Makes me smile everytime. My parents farm 20 miles from Delhi and I now live in Des Moines. Most Iowans just laugh at those that make fun of us. I guess it make them feel better and superior to us Midwest folks ;)
just to clear up your little debate, i live about 15 min away from lake delhi, and have a lot of friends who live out there, and we go there to party all the time. Should say did i guess. But everyone is fine, no one was hurt at all.. So that wasnt something to worry about, and it's good that they showed this so down stream they could prepare!
@JaySoKnown "at least most people may be safe." It's true. As much as we would like to have everyone be safe, it's not going to happen 100% of the time :(
@JaySoKnown While you are correct in that they didn't focus on the people much, and bit much on the dam, they did say people above and below the dam were evacuated. So I guess a least most people may be safe.
I resided near Martensdale, Iowa in the summer of 1974. Torrential rains then flooded Martensdale and surrounding miles of corn fields. Now I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and we are flooded with 110 degree heat and 10% humidity....No Rain
Ma-quo-keta River...that has to be the worst pronunciation I've ever heard...I started to look on a map to find the river they were talking about lol and I live in the area!
I know there are a few people in the area who claim to have video of the dam as it actually gave out.
@controlfreakssuckass Cuz the water above the dam rose like 15 feet. Houses, like ours, that shouldve been well out of the flood water, still flooded. It was intense.
@OctagonGladiator33 wow, good thing the damn dam broke for you guys? i hope you guys dry out & things get back to normal... seems odd to hear n evac. above a broken dam...
Where is trhe Media on this??? The only place I saw anything about this on the TV was the Weather Channel... This town is going to need some serious help after this ...
@DowJonesTheory you better tell all these jackasses on the fwy. that the population is shrinking...Someone forgot to tell them , and the traffic is killing me. Banks are collapsing because the people are not buying things,
Last night in my area there was a very bad storm and it caused some damage to trees. My girfriend and I saw the aftermath as she and I were on our afternoon walk
As dams age and downstream development increases, the number of deficient dams has risen to more than 4,000, including 1,819 high hazard potential dams. Over the past six years, for every deficient, high hazard potential dam repaired, nearly two more were declared deficient. There are more than 85,000 dams in the U.S., and the average age is just over 51 years old.
@aussiebattler1 This was not a high hazard dam, it was in the moderate category and was inspected last year and found ok. This area had high river levels already and received nearly a foot of rain the night before. The gates were open but it was completely overwelmed by the sheer amount of water dumped on the area the night before. They only way this could have been prevented is if the dam was taller and the spill gates larger.
@uhsbandfan well the third flood gate was only half open the dam was supous to beable to handle that kinda flood but the 2008 flood damaged the far south flood gate
Recent report said global warming should cause draught on North America and they just lost a huge chunk of their drinking water. Oh well the men with metaldetectors will get every thing metallic out the mud in a few days.

@TeamZinger1 You could be dealing with a major flood. No town could take care of itself if 80% of the houses are swept away.

Are the Delaware Bay & the Chesapeake Bay connected? So, which, if not both Bays are affected by the runoff from this busted dam?
