Not a big person on celebrating Hallmark designed celebrations. But celebrating a child's life is a pretty cool thing to do.
Voila, (here it is) it could be the helpful annual reminder for the child that their neglectful parental unit(s)/guardian/family members love them (at least once a year.) *blech and humbug*
yeah, i think of it more as a time set aside to celebrate and be thankful for the life of the kid. it has become more ego-centered (kid-ego and adult-ego) unfortunately. don't throw the baby out with the bath water!
I agree. My very first memory is of my third birthday so I don't believe people should spend a ton of money on their kid's first-second b-day party. I do think a gathering of the parents' friends should happen. Also, I got a present at my first b-day party that I kept with me until I went to college. I still have it somewhere in my parent's house. It was nice growing up with a tangible item I received so early in my life. But no, I don't think a ton of money should go into the celebration.
To me the point of the first birthday party is kind of to have fun and film it and stuff so the child can look back on it later and remember their childhood vicariously, I've had lots of fun watching videos of my really early birthday parties that I don't remember, and I think every child deserves that privilege. If you think that isn't a valid reason to have a first birthday party, then whats the point of filming anything at all from when a child is younger than 2 or 3 years old.
From a rational point of view i totally agree with you. But from another point of I think all these types of useless events are a good way to bring people together for the good and the bad and make life a bit different and less monotonous. Imagine if you'd erase all useless things, i think life would seem pretty useless too :P
it's pretty late right now so don't go try find some hidden and deep stuff in my comment, i'm just tired.... :P
Why wouldn't you get together on any other day? Because your child/cousin/ grandson wasn't born on any other day. It was born on THAT day. No other day will ever compare to that one, no matter how extraordinary it is. I obviously don't remember my 1st birthday, but I see the photos and I keep the teddy bear I got on my bed to this very day. First birthdays aren't stupid. They are one of the SMARTEST things out there :P

I don't have children, but I imagine you feel that the first year passes really fast. What you're left with then is a one-year old and a feeling that not only is your child growing up before you have time to think, but you are also getting old, and this feeling is forcing it's way into you mind and ripping it to pieces. To avoid this horrible and crushing realization, you throw a party, to distract yourself from reality. But you're totally cool, so I'm sure this doesn't apply to you.
My mom saved all the cards from all my birthdays. As an adult, it was so lovely to read through them. I was especially touched by the cards from my grandparents who have all passed away. By what was written in the cards, it was clear that people were celebrating the joy I had brought into their life and left great messages of hope for my future. I would suggest collecting messages for future pixel to enjoy.
@danceandrevolution that;s a good idea, also, to a certain extent that is what this video thing is all about too. Well, not THIS video blog, but the other one wherein I'm documenting her whole life.
Happy birthday Pixel, still 20 years ahead of you. I feel the first birthday is more for the parents. it can be a salebration on the womans achevement in pushing a live human out of them. it can be a selebration of how the child has servived, thrived, and grown in a year. and it can be an opertunity for the parents to bask in the joy the child has given and gives them.
I'm a lot like you man, but I am realizing go with you Girlfriend. The women know what's up. Rationality isn't always the criteria with which we should judge events. :) Dude I got a picture that would settle this whole issue. :)
Yeah, I agree with you. Apparently my parents took me to a bunch of awesome and exciting events while I was 0-2 years old, and I have no memories of them at all! My brother is 2 years older than me though, so the events were probably more for him than me.
Happy birthday PIXEL!!! i agree with you sir haha but i guess the same could be said about birthdays 1-4 seeing as how your not able to retain a memory untill age 4 im....JS
@R3zD0g yeah but at least during the 2-4 year old range you can have an appreciation for the event as something particularly special. Like you can have anticipation for it and be excited when they arrives. The 1st birthday does not come with all of that.
It's a good excuse to get everybody together. Why can't you get together any old time? They certainly can - but because everybody is so busy with their lives it has been my experience that 'someday' rarely happens.... so why not make it an occasion...
I think the big spending on a first birthday is stupid, but I don't think the idea of celebrating them is. Yeah, make a cake! Get one or two presents! But don't invite everyone you know, don't decorate or make any big effort. I think the celebrating the fact that a year ago this tiny little person came into the world and changed your life is sweet, but I think it would be better to keep it in the immediate family. Parent and siblings of the kid, maybe grandparents if they live close by.
@AntGotMullah even if I had I wouldn't have remembered it, so what's the point? A similar argument exists for the "First Christmas" although that event at least has precedent as a family gathering type holiday, so there is an independent reason to get together aside from the fact that it's "Baby's First _______"
@JesterAzazel yep, but I didn't censor the second occurrence of the word "fucking" at the end of the video. I find self-censorship to be funny, I'm not sure why, but I do.

WHY ARE YOU BLEEPING!!!?
Stop bleeping, please?... its really irritating, and anybody that can't handle the odd swear words that are said, shouldn't be watching your vids.
Just saying!

Happy birthday, Pixel!
I'm so in agreement with you on this one. It makes no sense when the kid is so young. And I'm not a fan of super fancy birthday parties at *any* age.

Celebrate every day and everyone :) Birthdays are stupid i think. We turn 60 seconds older every minute, why count years? :P

Sounds like someone didnt get a present on their 1st birthday lol.. It is kindof pointless though when you think about it

I agree. I've always thought 1st birthdays are stupid.
The celebration for pushing someone out of your vagina already exists. It's called mother's day.
Birthdays are for the person whose birthday it is, and if that person won't remember it and isn't aware of what is going on, it's pointless.

@themefund
I hadn't noticed. But yea, it is kind of funny that you got "ass" but missed a "fucking".
I also find it funny to say things like Frell and Dren in conversation as if it's natural, just to see who gets it.
