Super Supremes......Bad Weather was a pop r+b classic that Motown just let go to waste. I've read so many critical opinions that Mary and Lynda were brilliant together and I have to say that they seem to have always enjoyed performing together. Their sound was magnificent. I love all the groupings but there are moments with Scherrie and Susaye where Mary looks uncomfortable as if she's singing with two teenagers lol
Jean Terrell is no joke. That voice is the real deal. Most of my favorite Supremes songs are from the '70s. They did make many great records with Diana Ross before she left in early 1970, but song like Stoned Love from later that year and this one from '73 really do it for me.
Pure voice; no vocal theatrics, no studio tricks, no needing other singers to hit notes right under her to streghten her sound. Pure voice. Jean Terrell could have taken this group to new heights, and I think that was Berry was afraid of--The "New" Supremes out doing Diana Ross and the Supremes.

@bigbear39ca Mary Wilson was the Queen of the Supremes. She was VERY special that's why you can't help but watch all of her videos. We have proof of that !
This is a great song and it should have been a bigger hit........but you have to keep in mind it's not how good the song is that determines whether it becomes a hit or not. It's the promotion. At that time Berry Gordy, for some reason did not want to promote the Supremes. The DJs can't play what they don't hear.
Jean, Jean, Jean!! Where was I when this came out? Motown did those sisters dirty. How could they have under promoted such a great tune? Those girls are so fierce I could cry for real!!
That thing is so hot, I can't stand it!! And dig those moves on the Soul Train dance floor. Everybody's having a good time. And had I never realized just how well Jean Terrell could wail. I mean really!
That Terrell chick is pure SOUL and nobody pronounces the word "sugar" like her. And look at those moves by The Supremes! No wonder they were the greatest girl group in history.
@rameller1 I agree, Jean Terrell was a great vocalist I thought. I like all the Supremes TBH...they ALL brought something special to the gorup and that's why they're FOREVER be considered the greatest girl group EVER.
I remember when they turn the show out with this performance. They expected lip sync and got pure fierceness!!! It doesn't any better than this. That is why they were and will always be The Supremes!
@Supremebuddy ... Cindy did not sing on the album Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb (1972). This was perhaps the only album Cindy did not sing on after Diana's exit in 1970. She sang on High Inergy before leaving for the second time in 1976, but Susaye's vocals were overdubbed on the tracks.
@Supremebuddy ... Cindy Birdsong did NOT sing on this song. She sang on the "Floy Joy" album even though Lynda was pictured on the album cover. This song was recorded after Cindy left the group; Lynda's former association with Stevie Wonder (as a member of Wonderlove) led Stevie to write and record this song on the Supremes, so Cindy was not involved. Read Mary's biography, Supreme Faith and check the dates.
Hey you guys...anyway...Cindy recorded this song as she did all of the songs on the High Energy album. Lynda came into the picture because Cindy was pregnant with her son and didn't want to look like a beached whale on stage... and those were her words btw! She sang on every Supremes album ever released after Diane's split.
@supremebuddy You are totally incorrect on two(2) counts. Cindy did not recored "Bad Weather", that was Lynda through her association with Stevie Wonder, who wrote the song. Lynda was originally supposed to sing the lead, instead she provided the ad-libs in the climax of the song. Cindy did not do the Jimmy Webb album in'72, that was done by Lynda also.
@supremebuddy Couldn't you tell the difference in the 1st soprano voice and how much stronger it was than Cindy's? Cindy wasn't in the picture neither time. Read the books.
crap1453: Thanks a million for posting this video of the new Supremes on Soul Train. This has always been my most favorite record by the new Supremes and I was incredibly disappointed when it did not become the super hit that it truly deserved. I recalled watching JML on SoulT doing this number and just knew this was going to a smash for the girls. It is sad that Motown didn't push this single. I have played this post 15 times in a row of The Supremes. I love the hell out of this record. Thanks.
She never sang "the ballads" leads while DR sang the "cutesy songs". THAT IS A BIG LIE. Where's her proof ?
the Tempts, Michael J, Marvin, The Beatles, Ashford and S, Smokey, ARETHA, CHAKA, Stephanie M, Whiteny, OPRAH, Phyllis Hy, Stevie and Lionel etc etc all have PRAISED DIANA!
NOBODY EXCEPT A SMALL SICK CULT of Diana-hatin-queens even knows wilson's name, much less her nothin' whisper pf a flat voice that isn't even on some of the hits.
Jean sure knows how to sing a STEVIE WONDER song! Did he co-write this with Lynda's brother?
Lynda's interview on a local Los Angeles radio show recently was so fun. She mentioned how sweet Ross was and how good the Supremes all sounded together ono the LOVE tour, which sold more tickets than any Supreme's tour since Ross left the group. Lynda has such a good voice still. They played an old duet she did with Harry Nillsonn of "Baby I'm Yours" that was just fantastic!!!!!! Jean and Lynda !!
Her voice is sweet and agile but so fierce at the same time. Like Ross & great pop/jazz singers like Ella, Sarah, Carmen and Doris her lyrics are clearly pronounced and smoothly phrased.
Stevie Wonder (BAD WEATHER) and Jean are a magic combo, just like Syreeta and Stevie.
I think that they should have left motown after Jean and Linda left, yeah they should of done like labelle, changed there name since motown wanted to make such a big deal over ownership because they were no longer the supremes after that ,the sound had changed to much and the time was so diffrent ,also,I think they would of done better if they were to do this.Down fall Motown,Supreme branding.
lets be real, both of them had way more vocal tellent than Diana ,it was just the fact that Berry was set on Diana to succeed. Both of them could do runs well beyond what Diana could do.
Her wonderful songs are still played on the radio daily, It would be a great project for Jean. Most great songs around today were written by those no longer with us (Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, John Lennon etc),Calvin.
When great songwriters die their songs don't.
Signed, Sealed Delivered was OBAMA"S campaign theme song!!!!
Jean is simply magical perfection on this song. She would have worked wonders on some of Stevie/ Syreeta's songs like "I Never Dreamed You Leave in Summer" and "If You Really Loved Me"
Have read numerous inside acocunts of the Motown golden era. Flo,and esp mary's difficulty w/ learning harmony is well documented. Ross, was a VERY quick study and could pop out one-take cuts by the dozen, hence ALL those lps (county, Funnygirl, Rodgers/Hart/ Liverpool etc etc). Why do you think mary and Cindy were left on the road (to play, cruise and date) while DR was flown back and forth to the studio from the shows to record? PROFESSIONAL back up singers COULD keep up with Diva Diana.
Mable John who was at Motown when the Supremes they where Primetes then did there audition and thru mots of their early tenure said Mary had the best ear for Harmony.Diane name did not come into play or was mentioned in that statement.Diane was always punctual and usually early at rehearsals when the the other Supremes arrived. The Ross mystic was Motown created. She was groomed to be alusive with the public thereby creating a personna only to be recreated by Michael Jackson years later.

I have said it before and I will say it again. This song should have been a hit record for these SUPREMES. However, Motown did not promote them or this song. I am talking about Barry not giving his backing for them. They should have left Motown like Gladys and the Pips and The Four Tops. They would had made it. I believed that. The Supremes no matter who came after Diana had all the ladies had talent charm and looks and could sing ther ass off. Pardon the expression.
Strange because it was a top twenty pop hit in the UK charts when it came out. Obviously the Motown pr office in the UK were doing a better job than the US counterparts. They also had a top twenty hit around the same time with "Floy Joy".Personally "Bad Weather" is one of my favourite 70's Motown tracks. And most definitely the best Supremes track post Diana. Although I was never much of a fan of Ms Ross.
It is not strange it is sadly "the american way". Longevity of Fame for African American artist very often last longer in Europe. Why that is....I dont know. I have ideas but they are only based on my opinions or speculations and not facts.
Lynda Lawrence stopped the Supremes. She offered nothing special. Only when Cindy rejoined did they begin to recover some. Mary's talent and charisma kept them going longer than almost any other group who lost their original lead.
A group's fan base will not endure too many personnel changes. I was a HUGE Supremes fan (still am) yet even I got annoyed with all the changes in the group. By the time Susaye joine I could see the handwriting on the wall. Mary should have joine Jean and Lynda out of Motown. She made a bad career move and she paid for it. She cqn't blame Gordy's attention to Diana Ross for that. The Commodores, Rick James, The Jacksons, and many others fourished after Diana started to make movies.
You seem to know whats what. Can I ask you a big favour...From the start of the supremes to the end can you give me details of the starting line up obviously with ms Ross to all the changes that went on thereafter,if you have the dates I would be grateful.Brilliant group always.
At the disobenience,I meant like refuse to learn routnes, and such not kissing Marys ass in which Taddyd1 does gordy.Mary in my opnion is stupid, despite what that noobs saids, mary has done retard stuff, like not leaving motown, using susayane more and not reforming the supremes with flo when flo left.
I have to agree with you on some of those same issues I also have with Mary. I've often wondered what the group would've sounded like if Mary, Flo and Cindy took up the banner as the original Supremes plus 1 that sung with Diana would've done. I believed Motown might have reconsidered their postion with the group. It would've been a serious money maker!
Well, by 1975 The Supremes were victims of Motown's promotion attack meaning they got hardly any. When Suanye joined the group Motown feared her because of her long vocal range(7 I think) which is only done by patti labelle and mariah carey. It was obivous that Motown wanted them gone so Mary tried real hard to return the promotion back to them. Her husband was getting them gigs to horrible places and the pther knewe of his abuse of her.
So at first Susanye and Scherrie disabayed him to let him know that they know of his mistreatment of her. However the lack of promotion and the fact they had the the talent(Mary was a r&b ballad goddess, scheriie was a power house singer and susanye 7 octive range singer, wrote songs for and with stevie wonder, was in his wonderlove group, and was a Raylette with Ray Charles). So Susanye decided she wanted to write The Supremes songs herself.
Susanye tried to plead with Motown to let her but they said no.They then made a deal:if Mary leaves the group then not only will she be able to write the songs for the group but they would get the same promotion as they had in the Hit years with Diana. Scherrie's mother was dying so she was very sad and she sided with her friend susanye. They would increase their outburts and be disobient to Mary and her husband and eventually mary quit the group.
This is why Mary left because her teammates had backstaabed her. At first they were gonna replace her with someone else but they(motown) decided to end the group for good due to the fact that they recongized that Mary was essential to the group(Kinda like you don't apprecaite something till its gone). So they ended the group and Scherie and susanye did a unsucceful duet album cause of lack of promotion.
They learned that Motown used them and they soon apologized to Mary and they became fiends again. Mary had did so much for the group. In 1975 she founded The Supremes Corpration( or something like that) to handle promotion instead but motown put legal stuff to limit their proming power and the company put out other stuff like wigs and stuff so that scherie ans usnaye would have a god amount of ecome that was not coming from singing due to low ablum sales.
She let them have leads of songs instead of being like Diana Ross and take lead on everything with nothing but her voice. Motown had not wanted Scherrie in the group but Mary fought hard and got her in it and had to unwillingly sign all rights of the group name to motown to do so thanks to maniplation on Motowns part.
MOTOWN was a very succesful business. Gordy would never have released records on his lable w/ wilson singing leads. That was NOT an option. The producers choose the leads and many have let the non-singer put down a track or two as a novelty. What kind of miss mary wilaon fantasy world to you come from. Who is the "everybody" that thought mary would sing lead? Only the ones on crack like mary.
It was all a plot to end the Supremes for good. I believe they were never really going to replace her(Mary) at all. But it was rumored that Joyce Vincent Wilson(of Tony Orlando & Dawn) who'd be Mary's replacement. Thank you once again Hello3691 for your accurate information. Did you get that taddyd1?!!!
The Susaye/Sherrie lp is unlistenable that is why it didn't sell. They are both VERY talented but that album sucked compared to a the work of great R&B females out at that time:
Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, Merry Clayton, Syreeta, Marlena Shaw, Deniece&Minnie, Linda Lewis, Dee Dee Brigdewater, Ta Ta Vega, Teena Marie, Cissy Houston, Candy Staton, Patti Austin, Valerie Simpson,Mary Russell, Randy Crawford etc etc
NOT to mention: Aretha, Dionne, Gladys, Chaka, The Pointers, Patti and DIANA!
Why should the SINGERS be obedient to mary and pedro? You are one miss mary wilson ass lickin fan.
They were the MUSIC and TALENT of the group.
YOU would be furious if someone said mary & FLORENCE should be "obediant" to Diana.
Martha Reeves told me how unprofessional and weak mary's segments were when mary joined Martha, David & Eddie's show. Plus mary was always talkin smack behind Couniclwoman Reeve's back all the time.
Unlike David, when mary was using her singing got even messier!
They do NOT! It is UNREAL! They'd HAVE to sing lower than a bass which NO woman can, and HIGHER than a 'dog whistle'... which is already self-explained!
The truth is hes a noob on music as a whole, he goes around different genre's of music and attck poeple. For proof, just search his name in google and you'll find everything you'll need to know about him.
How can you possibly say Mary had a bad attitude and no talent, she kept The Supremes going after many had given up on them, whether or not you agree with this is besides the point. She may not be the best singer but has actually improved over the years , particulalrly her more jazz influenced offerings of late. I have seen Mary live on many occassions and am still amazed when she sings without a microphone , terrific !
Thank you br942. I've finally found someone witha voice of reason and someone who knows the real story of the Supremes. Someone else please school taddyd1 and wake him up from his delulsions!!!
After Diana left, Motown was to busy making stars out of the Jackson Five and establishing the solo career of Diana Ross. Jean Terrell left the Supremes in 1973 because of the mismanagement of there earnings and the fact that Motown was not promoting their records and she was ill while the Supremes played the Copa. They should've brought Flo back.
Let's see, Jean is retired (I love her), Lynda is nowhere in obscurity, Syreeta is dead and Mary Wilson? Oh that's right she is getting ready to tour the U.K. in June.....still wowing audiences after all these years. Did I forget Diane? Oh she's a drunk now, that's right.
Diana Ross has been sober now for 5 years. She is NOT a drunk. She tours consistantly and her recording of I Love You went gold. She will be in CT in May. Mary used to be cokehead but I see you failed to mention that. Let's be fair.
I remember being intensely amused by the bloke blowing the whistle for all he was worth when this song was on T of P's. Nobody, not even me, could work out why I found it so funny. Great fun, though, and brilliant song.
Quite clearly not the recording. HERMAJESTYTHEQUEENOFSOUL ARETHA FRANKLIN ALWAYS SANG LIVE ON SOULTRAIN (ONE ON THE FEW) WITH THE ORIGINAL INSTRUMENTAL TRACK BECAUSE SHE HATED LIP-SYNCHING. OF COURSE LIP SYNCHING IS ALL MARY COULD DO (USUALLY TO SOMEONE ELSE'S VOCALS OF COURSE)!
Thanks for giving me the heads up on this non Supremem lover. It's obvious that he doesn't know any of the stories or background info. on the whole Supremes saga including Diana to Susaye Greene!
The point taddyd1 that every Supreme who came after the original Supremes had to follow the set vocal pattern of Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson!!! That also includes Cindy Birdsong who perfected immulating the Supremes' sound. Every Supreme that set, followed suit. So if anyone is lipsyncing or immulating anyone, it's all the Supremes after Mary and Flo!!!
Oh that is not right, Dear Calvin; don't you remember mary and Cindy lipsynching to the Andantes back-up vocals on Love Child and Someday We'll Be Together? I know Cindy was a minister and a Bluebelle but she and mary (OBVIOUSLY) couldn't deliver the gospel funk required by the arrangers of the those fabulous Number #1 pop and R&B hits.
Apparently, you're not making good use of the clips on YouTube to see their live performances where they are not lip-syncing; i.e. " Reflections" and I have personal video clips of them singing on the old "Ed Sullivan" show where he thrives on live performances; i.e. Mary and Cindy " Keep Falling In & Out of Love"; and there are many other examples of their live performances. I'm very aware of the Andantes background vocals on Supremes recordings between the years of '67 & '69.
They DID lip synch to Someday and Lovechild though and Lord knows mary could never duplicate the powerful singing on the original records. The point is all the other Supremes could sing and mary can't, couldn't and never will be able to. Her inability to learn harmony singing is legendary amongst Motown insiders. That's why her career is: hating on DIANA! pooo thing.
Many of the Diana Ross & The Supremes performances were lip synched, even Diana herself lip synch and slipped up on a few bars and phrases. That wasn't the only performance of " Love Child" performed on the Ed Sullivan show. They returned on the show a week or two later and performed the song live with Mary singing in harmony with Cindy. I have the tape. So there was no mistake that she could sing in harmony. Mary may not be a great singer, but she knew harmony very well.
But Mary did perform both songs live on the Ed Sullivan show and in concerts. So that still says something to the degree about her talent. That she can duplicate the sound that was recorded by others. You seem to forget that even the Andantes had to sound like the Supremes and in turn the Supremes had to sound like the Andantes. Plus, the Andantes weren't on stage and they weren't on t.v. Mary and Cindy were on.
Let's not forget all the live performances on other televised live shows with the original group before and after their success when all they did was sing live and Mary herself held down the alto in perfect pitch and harmony.
You may not personally like Ms. Wilson, but she was the later known as the backbone of the group. She also believed in the group enough to continue their legacy with other very talented singers; majority of them were singing lead. So she(Mary) was very aware of her limitations as a lead singer.
Does backbone mean the one who ripped the other 2 singers off? Jean who did all the leads was given a salary as opposed to a 1/3 of the profits. But Mary and Pedro did need their Crack Money. Diana split the $ three ways even after the title change to Diana Ross and the...
If Syretta, Jean and Lynda would have been the trio the group would have lasted until Ms Wright (RIP) passed away; they were all such great singers. Syretta wrote as well.
This is totally ludicris. Mary and Pedro (who just became the manager) had nothing to do with their salaries or shares in the group. Motown made sure they all signed a waiver stating that they were not going to receive any royalties in their lead or background vocal recordings of any of their songs. Syreeta was never going to be in the group especially with Jean in it when Berry wanted Jean out and replace her with Syreeta Wright.
The money comes from live concert for most artists except Mariahs or Garths. That's were mary ripped the real Singers off.
Why do you want to cover that dirty chapter? Mush nastier than anyhing Ross did. Why do you think Marvleous Jean and Lynda quit? mary has always been fuckin with FLOSS too even though their Ross covers are MUCH better than hers!
oh please they quit beause of lack of hits and support from motown, the only thing mary did that made them mad was not leave motown with them. Mary has been fair infact everybody in motown thought that after diana left that mary was gonna take control of lead singer like ross did meaning nothing but her voice but instead she let jean and every supreme after have lead and even offered lynda lead and there exist songs with cindy as lead which would never happen with ross in the group.
jean was salaried because MOTOWN salaried her, not mary, or supremes, inc. - which wasn't even an entity while jean was with the group. diana split nothing three ways - again, it was motown - why do people talk such nonsense as if it was fact? clearly, your opinions, & the facts of the matter do not jibe...
taddyd1 needs a huge refresher course of sups 101 - mary only MET pedro when jean & lynda were in the group - he did not push them out, nor were they "sick" of him, as he & mary were not married until a year after both ladies left - how can people be sooo passionate about things that clearly are not true..?
Oh yes he Was! That was when he became MORE involved. And Cindy left because of him, really. The girls were unhappy, and Mary was caught in the middle tryin' to be the 'wife' but also keeping control of him. HE is the one who found Susaye after Cindy, and 'wanted' Thelma Houston. He was STILL involved after or during the divorce which is why Mary had to nearly go into exile to work out ways to KEEP his hands OUT of HER pockets. And there's 'MORE'!......
Well, misinformed taddyd1 strikes again! And once again, you are sadly incorrect in your assumption dream team; you misguided dellusional person. That dream team would have never happened because once again, Berry didn't like Jean and neither did Jean like Berry. If it wasn't for Mary who stuck up for Jean, she would have never been in the group and why, because Jean had the decency not to sleep with little short fat balding aging old men such as; Berry Gordy ; your lord and savior.
OooH......., all praises to your lord and savior!!!(LOL)!!! YOU ARE HILARIOUSLY LAUGHABLE!!!! (LMAO)!!! He was a crook and everybody in Motown knew it!!! You name the act and they all have a story to tell!!!
NOW Berry is loved by those who worked with him, all of whom recognize his creative genius and that they would be nobody without him.
Where did all the Supremes go after they left his house. A quick trip to nowhere.
(xcept for Di)
Children, when they are just becoming adults, frequently bitch about their parents, but a few years later they wake up and realize how good they had it, and how wonderful those parents were.
Well, I hope you remember that the next time you speak ill of someone else's character taddyd1. Especially, someone who has done more with her lifetime than you and I will probablty ever do in ours and yes I'm speaking of Ms. Mary Wilson.
It seems to me that you Taddyd1 are the only one on these posts that speaks contrary to everyone else on these postings about the Supremes' Mary Wilson.
Could be your obvious hatred towards Ms. Wilson is because her books almost single handedly detroyed Di's career? is that the reason for your obvious dislike of her? If so, then get over it. Diana had her time in the sun and now the sun has set ...on her.
They give that award to people who have been in the entertainment industry and service for 4o+. Aretha and Patti both have that award. They also have grammies, emmys and Patti had aTony nomination. Something Ms Di stll doesn't have and will never get. All true Supremes fans know exactly what all the Supremes sound like and yes, even Mary.
You maybe correct on Patti not receiving an award yet for 40+ yrs., but she still has grammies and an emmy and even Lady Di can't even say that at all!!! Liza does have a Tony and Patti was nominated, but Lady Di can't even get her small cracking voice to even be accepted by Broadway!!!
ONLY one gospel singer ever. Patti sang for Aretha's award. Kennedy winners compete with Fred Astaire, Paul Newman, Leonard Bernstein, Beverly Sills, etc NOT just beyonce.
I don't listen to Beyonce. Patti will be honored very soon and when she does get honored, that's one more award she'll have over Ms. Thing!!! By the way, the last time Patti spoke of Di , it was not endearing; not unless you call "I wanna go to Detroit and cut me some Diana Ross" from "Living It Up with Patti Labelle" on TV1, endearing? If anything Diana doesn't even register in Patti's world or mind.
Yes, Ross has one too. For her sold out "AN Evening with Diana Ross" show. She has a Tony. She broke a house record for attendance at Radio City Music Hall
Diana will still make albums and sell out huge concerts events , something wilson hasn't done since she was mooching off Diana/ Jean's coat tails in the Supremes.
Terrific performance. I always say nobody pronounces the word "sugar" better than Jean Terrell.

This is a great song and it should have been a bigger hit........but you have to keep in mind it's not how good the song is that determines whether it becomes a hit or not. It's the promotion. At that time Berry Gordy, for some reason did not want to promote the Supremes. The DJs can't play what they don't hear.

@Supremebuddy ... Cindy did not sing on the album Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb (1972). This was perhaps the only album Cindy did not sing on after Diana's exit in 1970. She sang on High Inergy before leaving for the second time in 1976, but Susaye's vocals were overdubbed on the tracks.
mrjlg404 1 year ago
@Supremebuddy ... Cindy Birdsong did NOT sing on this song. She sang on the "Floy Joy" album even though Lynda was pictured on the album cover. This song was recorded after Cindy left the group; Lynda's former association with Stevie Wonder (as a member of Wonderlove) led Stevie to write and record this song on the Supremes, so Cindy was not involved. Read Mary's biography, Supreme Faith and check the dates.

they are going to start rebroadcasting SOUL Train episodes this weekend on VH!
etrax2000 2 years ago
Hey you guys...anyway...Cindy recorded this song as she did all of the songs on the High Energy album. Lynda came into the picture because Cindy was pregnant with her son and didn't want to look like a beached whale on stage... and those were her words btw! She sang on every Supremes album ever released after Diane's split.
supremebuddy 2 years ago
@supremebuddy You are totally incorrect on two(2) counts. Cindy did not recored "Bad Weather", that was Lynda through her association with Stevie Wonder, who wrote the song. Lynda was originally supposed to sing the lead, instead she provided the ad-libs in the climax of the song. Cindy did not do the Jimmy Webb album in'72, that was done by Lynda also.
Calvin375 1 year ago

Thanks.

mw can't sing and everyone knows it.
NOBODY EXCEPT A SMALL SICK CULT of Diana-hatin-queens even knows wilson's name, much less her nothin' whisper pf a flat voice that isn't even on some of the hits.

taddyd1 2 years ago
Jean sure knows how to sing a STEVIE WONDER song! Did he co-write this with Lynda's brother?
Lynda's interview on a local Los Angeles radio show recently was so fun. She mentioned how sweet Ross was and how good the Supremes all sounded together ono the LOVE tour, which sold more tickets than any Supreme's tour since Ross left the group. Lynda has such a good voice still. They played an old duet she did with Harry Nillsonn of "Baby I'm Yours" that was just fantastic!!!!!! Jean and Lynda !!
taddyd1 2 years ago
JEAN is sheer magic on this song,
Her voice is sweet and agile but so fierce at the same time. Like Ross & great pop/jazz singers like Ella, Sarah, Carmen and Doris her lyrics are clearly pronounced and smoothly phrased.
Stevie Wonder (BAD WEATHER) and Jean are a magic combo, just like Syreeta and Stevie.
Sure hope JT gets back to the studio soon!

I think that they should have left motown after Jean and Linda left, yeah they should of done like labelle, changed there name since motown wanted to make such a big deal over ownership because they were no longer the supremes after that ,the sound had changed to much and the time was so diffrent ,also,I think they would of done better if they were to do this.Down fall Motown,Supreme branding.
darkebony 2 years ago
syreeta and jean really have very similar styles and voices. what great talents.
taddyd1 2 years ago
lets be real, both of them had way more vocal tellent than Diana ,it was just the fact that Berry was set on Diana to succeed. Both of them could do runs well beyond what Diana could do.

Jean should record a whole album of Syreeta and Stevie.
She is so marvelous on this Stevie song!

She would have worked wonders on some of Stevie/ Syreeta's songs like "I Never Dreamed You Leave in Summer" and "If You Really Loved Me"
Hope she makes some more albums.

PROFESSIONAL back up singers COULD keep up with Diva Diana.
taddyd1 2 years ago

Pardon the expression.
redwalls76 3 years ago

Mary's talent and charisma kept them going longer than almost any other group who lost their original lead.
spintation 3 years ago 2
A group's fan base will not endure too many personnel changes. I was a HUGE Supremes fan (still am) yet even I got annoyed with all the changes in the group. By the time Susaye joine I could see the handwriting on the wall. Mary should have joine Jean and Lynda out of Motown. She made a bad career move and she paid for it. She cqn't blame Gordy's attention to Diana Ross for that. The Commodores, Rick James, The Jacksons, and many others fourished after Diana started to make movies.

Calvin375 2 years ago
Sure a real money maker, they all made sooo much money without Diana.
Delerious.
taddyd1 2 years ago
Well, by 1975 The Supremes were victims of Motown's promotion attack meaning they got hardly any. When Suanye joined the group Motown feared her because of her long vocal range(7 I think) which is only done by patti labelle and mariah carey. It was obivous that Motown wanted them gone so Mary tried real hard to return the promotion back to them. Her husband was getting them gigs to horrible places and the pther knewe of his abuse of her.
Hello3691 3 years ago
So at first Susanye and Scherrie disabayed him to let him know that they know of his mistreatment of her. However the lack of promotion and the fact they had the the talent(Mary was a r&b ballad goddess, scheriie was a power house singer and susanye 7 octive range singer, wrote songs for and with stevie wonder, was in his wonderlove group, and was a Raylette with Ray Charles). So Susanye decided she wanted to write The Supremes songs herself.
Hello3691 3 years ago
Susanye tried to plead with Motown to let her but they said no.They then made a deal:if Mary leaves the group then not only will she be able to write the songs for the group but they would get the same promotion as they had in the Hit years with Diana. Scherrie's mother was dying so she was very sad and she sided with her friend susanye. They would increase their outburts and be disobient to Mary and her husband and eventually mary quit the group.
Hello3691 3 years ago
This is why Mary left because her teammates had backstaabed her. At first they were gonna replace her with someone else but they(motown) decided to end the group for good due to the fact that they recongized that Mary was essential to the group(Kinda like you don't apprecaite something till its gone). So they ended the group and Scherie and susanye did a unsucceful duet album cause of lack of promotion.
Hello3691 3 years ago
They learned that Motown used them and they soon apologized to Mary and they became fiends again. Mary had did so much for the group. In 1975 she founded The Supremes Corpration( or something like that) to handle promotion instead but motown put legal stuff to limit their proming power and the company put out other stuff like wigs and stuff so that scherie ans usnaye would have a god amount of ecome that was not coming from singing due to low ablum sales.
Hello3691 3 years ago
She let them have leads of songs instead of being like Diana Ross and take lead on everything with nothing but her voice. Motown had not wanted Scherrie in the group but Mary fought hard and got her in it and had to unwillingly sign all rights of the group name to motown to do so thanks to maniplation on Motowns part.
Hello3691 3 years ago
That was the fight and why the supremes are no longer together.
Hello3691 3 years ago
Now why didin't they want Scherrie?!!! I knew all about Jean, but this one is new to me and very interesting.
Calvin375 3 years ago
MOTOWN was a very succesful business. Gordy would never have released records on his lable w/ wilson singing leads. That was NOT an option. The producers choose the leads and many have let the non-singer put down a track or two as a novelty. What kind of miss mary wilaon fantasy world to you come from.

How can you possibly say Mary had a bad attitude and no talent, she kept The Supremes going after many had given up on them, whether or not you agree with this is besides the point. They should've brought Flo back.

taddyd1 3 years ago
The point taddyd1 that every Supreme who came after the original Supremes had to follow the set vocal pattern of Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson!!! That also includes Cindy Birdsong who perfected immulating the Supremes' sound. Every Supreme that set, followed suit. So if anyone is lipsyncing or immulating anyone, it's all the Supremes after Mary and Flo!!!
Calvin375 3 years ago
Oh that is not right, Dear Calvin; don't you remember mary and Cindy lipsynching to the Andantes back-up vocals on Love Child and Someday We'll Be Together? I know Cindy was a minister and a Bluebelle but she and mary (OBVIOUSLY) couldn't deliver the gospel funk required by the arrangers of the those fabulous Number #1 pop and R&B hits.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Apparently, you're not making good use of the clips on YouTube to see their live performances where they are not lip-syncing; i.e. " Reflections" and I have personal video clips of them singing on the old "Ed Sullivan" show where he thrives on live performances; i.e. Mary and Cindy " Keep Falling In & Out of Love"; and there are many other examples of their live performances. I'm very aware of the Andantes background vocals on Supremes recordings between the years of '67 & '69.
Calvin375 3 years ago
They DID lip synch to Someday and Lovechild though and Lord knows mary could never duplicate the powerful singing on the original records. The point is all the other Supremes could sing and mary can't, couldn't and never will be able to. Her inability to learn harmony singing is legendary amongst Motown insiders. That's why her career is: hating on DIANA! pooo thing.
taddyd1 3 years ago
Many of the Diana Ross & The Supremes performances were lip synched, even Diana herself lip synch and slipped up on a few bars and phrases. That wasn't the only performance of " Love Child" performed on the Ed Sullivan show. They returned on the show a week or two later and performed the song live with Mary singing in harmony with Cindy. I have the tape. So there was no mistake that she could sing in harmony. Mary may not be a great singer, but she knew harmony very well.
Calvin375 3 years ago
yes.... but Ms Ross was lip synching her own singing unlike Mary who didn't record Love Child or Someday
taddyd1 3 years ago
But Mary did perform both songs live on the Ed Sullivan show and in concerts. So that still says something to the degree about her talent. That she can duplicate the sound that was recorded by others. You seem to forget that even the Andantes had to sound like the Supremes and in turn the Supremes had to sound like the Andantes. Plus, the Andantes weren't on stage and they weren't on t.v. Mary and Cindy were on.
Calvin375 3 years ago
Let's not forget all the live performances on other televised live shows with the original group before and after their success when all they did was sing live and Mary herself held down the alto in perfect pitch and harmony.
Calvin375 3 years ago
You may not personally like Ms. Wilson, but she was the later known as the backbone of the group. She also believed in the group enough to continue their legacy with other very talented singers; majority of them were singing lead. So she(Mary) was very aware of her limitations as a lead singer.
Calvin375 3 years ago
Does backbone mean the one who ripped the other 2 singers off? Jean who did all the leads was given a salary as opposed to a 1/3 of the profits. But Mary and Pedro did need their Crack Money. Diana split the $ three ways even after the title change to Diana Ross and the...
If Syretta, Jean and Lynda would have been the trio the group would have lasted until Ms Wright (RIP) passed away; they were all such great singers. Syretta wrote as well.
taddyd1 3 years ago
This is totally ludicris. Mary and Pedro (who just became the manager) had nothing to do with their salaries or shares in the group. Motown made sure they all signed a waiver stating that they were not going to receive any royalties in their lead or background vocal recordings of any of their songs. Syreeta was never going to be in the group especially with Jean in it when Berry wanted Jean out and replace her with Syreeta Wright.
Calvin375 3 years ago
The money comes from live concert for most artists except Mariahs or Garths. That's were mary ripped the real Singers off.
Why do you want to cover that dirty chapter? Mush nastier than anyhing Ross did. Why do you think Marvleous Jean and Lynda quit? mary has always been fuckin with FLOSS too even though their Ross covers are MUCH better than hers!
taddyd1 3 years ago
oh please they quit beause of lack of hits and support from motown, the only thing mary did that made them mad was not leave motown with them.
Hello3691 3 years ago

Only a music and culture HATER could dislike a LEGENDARY humanitarian/ visionary like Gordy.
mary wilson is one of his very few mistakes.

OooH......., all praises to your lord and savior!!!(LOL)!!! YOU ARE HILARIOUSLY LAUGHABLE!!!! (LMAO)!!! He was a crook and everybody in Motown knew it!!! You name the act and they all have a story to tell!!!

We all have faults, Calvin375.
HAPPY 50th, BERRY !!!!!!!!!!

Well, I hope you remember that the next time you speak ill of someone else's character taddyd1. Especially, someone who has done more with her lifetime than you and I will probablty ever do in ours and yes I'm speaking of Ms. Mary Wilson.
It seems to me that you Taddyd1 are the only one on these posts that speaks contrary to everyone else on these postings about the Supremes' Mary Wilson.

mary's big cause is to block phony music groups from perfoming using old groups names.
but she's been doin that for years herself.
the very idea...!!!!
No Nobel Prize for the hater deluxe,
ms wilson is NO Joan Baez or. Mother Teresa.
you are really funny, Calvin!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol lol lol lo

Could be your obvious hatred towards Ms. Wilson is because her books almost single handedly detroyed Di's career? is that the reason for your obvious dislike of her? If so, then get over it. Diana had her time in the sun and now the sun has set ...on her.

destroyed?
She was awarded the Kennedy Center Award, THE highest honor, PERIOD, for anybody in the arts. oscar emmy and grammy are chump change in comparison
.
Oh, if only mary's career could be so "destroyed " as Diana's... instead of singing Diana's old Supreme leads in shopping malls along w/ taped tracks.
NO ONE (EXCEPT A very few FREAKS- youtube-DIANA haters) IN THE WORLD KNOWS WHAT MARY'S VOICE EVEN SOUNDS LIKE!!!!
MILLIONS KNOW AND LOVE TONS OF DIANA'S MUSIC!!!!

Calvin375 2 years ago
Patti does NOT have a Kennedy Center honor, check your facts! She performed at the event. Dionne doesn't even have one yet.
Any big singer who does a series of concerts on Broadways got a Tony.
Liza got the last one in that category this year. They've just decided to cut that award out. Dozens of singers have been awarded those.
Patti and Aretha have praised and referred to Ross repeatedly, never a peep have I heard from either Queen Diva about ms wilson.
taddyd1 2 years ago
You maybe correct on Patti not receiving an award yet for 40+ yrs., but she still has grammies and an emmy and even Lady Di can't even say that at all!!! Liza does have a Tony and Patti was nominated, but Lady Di can't even get her small cracking voice to even be accepted by Broadway!!!
Calvin375 2 years ago
I am correct. Patti has a long wait, if ever.
ONLY one gospel singer ever. Patti sang for Aretha's award. Kennedy winners compete with Fred Astaire, Paul Newman, Leonard Bernstein, Beverly Sills, etc NOT just beyonce.
taddyd1 2 years ago

The last album Diana recorded is still on her shelf because she can't even sell it to a major label!!! (LOL)!!!
