  • Like it. Thanks :)

  • You are an idiot...this ship was in the yards and barely capable of leaving. The fact that it was pulled out of the yards and sent underway was a massive event...so people died not because of the slow response of USNS Comfort, but because there was a huge natural disaster. Instead of posting how slow it took, try doing some research and post how fast it got underway!

  • Kind of a cool view of the interior of the ship. Interesting that in its original incarnation, that was probably a tank filled with crude oil where there are new hospital beds, as the USNS Comfort started out as an oil tanker.

It's a little more frustrating that, now, more than three days after the earthquake near Port Au Prince, this ship is still moored up in Baltimore. By the time it gets down there, a lot of the people it has the ability to save will be dead.

  • @chromal it takes the ship so long to leave because the boilers in the engine room have to be warmed up before it can leave, kinda like when you start your car up in the winter time. It usually takes 5 days for the ship to leave. I know this because I am actually stationed on here.

  • @jdperron187 : in retrospect, my criticism was pretty much unwarranted and unreasonable. Maybe an Ocean Linear could turn around it its heyday, but then, it had a continual staff and continual fires in the boiler. The USNS got there as quickly as could be expected and rendered great good.

  • @jdperron187 This is really interesting. Do you mean the boilers to the main engine? Is the engine (or engines) two or four stroke and is it HFO or diesel powered? I find it a bit strange that it took the boilers 5 days to warm up (unless there were technical problems in the first place?). How long had the ship been at quay before the departure? Perhaps the real reason was logistics or something similar, like crew related or equipment related?
