read about this in Stevie's bio, spent ages looking for it, and now I've found it, I'm not disappointed, love ya (In the manliest way possible) Stevie!!!!! Hope to see you in Blues heaven, jammin' with Hendrix at last!!
This is one of those ads that would have been played prior to a movie(maybe some 80's gem like Labyrinth or Beetlejuice) at the cinema too, for its sheer widescreen picture and musical spectacle. All this for a gas station brand.
hahah i love how Stevie is on the front of the train just jammin, hes the best of the best!! know one can explain the talent he has, its just there and appreciated alot! RIP, Rave On!
The bit after.23 looks like it was shot in the diner which was (is ?) inside an old airplane. Nothing fake about SRV. And is that the mural near Il Casino restaurant (now closed) in Tory St Wellington at 1.12 ? Wow.
I think maybe Red Mcalvie was one of your other musos that worked on the peace as well, Red told me also that when stevie was here, he had to have a marsel stak and a genny to run it!!!
I wagged school in '84 and caught an NZR bus, Kaitaia to Auckland, qued up at the Logan Campbell Centre for a few hours for my ticket. I went with my bros and man, what a concert! I caught the Herald bus back after the concert to get to my exam the next morning. My bro also gave me a cassette of The Optomist by DD Smash. Those were the days of real proper ads. Anyone remember the Crunchie ones, or Crumpy's Hilux ads? One scene of the Crunchie ads was shot in the sand dunes at Ahipara too.
I beleive that Midge Marsden may have released this on one of his albums - don't forget the other great blues men in this - Midge Marsden and Hammond Gamble....
One thing I love about this video is the old classic icons used in the vid - like the wreckers yard used in smash palace etc....
Lucky someone recorded this otherwise it would have remained in a vault waiting for an opportunity for someone to make some money. This way we get to share a piece of modern blues history.
I didnt think I was eveeeer going to see this commercial with stevie ray!!!I heard that he filmed it in New Zeland with his girlfriend, Janna Lapidus (the chick dancing by the car, and running with the suitcases), but i dont think it was ever shown here in the U.S. I finally saw it!! sooooo cool!!!!!!!
I have been wanting to see this for some time. I met Stevie in 1982 and again in 1983. I was a skinny little guitar player from Texas and he talked to me, not like a teenager, but a VERY NICE person. We all STILL miss you Stevie! You had GREAT taste in a ladies too!
Where did you get this from, bootle dvd?and had not thought to look for it here to realy.I never got to see him play live in NZ too,1989 was the one i chance i could have gone to realy, but missed for a few reasons.
He came in 84,86,89 for concerts, trips in 88,90,maybe more too that dont know of?.And you maybe saw him live did you in NZ or australia?.
Thanks Kiakaha4eva for the video, been wanting to see this again for ages, suppose last saw it when they stopped showing it in 1988 or so?.Like maybe it was on the following years, but not to shure if so realy on that now.
Like i never thought to tape it aswell back then, and remember it being on to a lot. This is the full version too?,as over time adds usualy seem to be cut down,so have longer and shorter versions.
SRV and MM! I haven't seen this ad in years. All the familiar landmarks in the background - 'danger' signs on the Desert Road, the wheat field on SH1 just north of Marton, Smash Palace...
Murray Grindlay was also in a Kiwi band called The Underdogs back in the 60s..'Sittin In The Rain' was a big hit of theirs...recently he's produced young Devonport band The Electric Confectionaires.
I remember the interview. It was with that totally laid back Karen Hay. Did you know she is now broadcasting on National Radio!!! From extreme to mainstream.
Yeah I remember that Karen Hay interview too .SRV was sitting there in the studio with lots of bling on his fingers ,snake skin boots, ivory topped cane and a Texas attitude. Great Stuff .
Janna recently got married. And she did a cameo in Out of Towners, she is the girl running away from Steve Martin in Central Park..in case u haven't seen it.
Yes, she's got a little boy too as I heard... I know I have already some comments on this video, but she and Stevie was so adorable in this video! Still love it :)))
Murray's alter ego was Monte Video and the Cassettes -- Shoop Shoop Diddy Wop Cumma Cumma Wang Dang. Should be able to find that on youtube. He was New Zealand's jingles king of the '70s to the '90s. "Cats prefer Chef, meow!"
I always remember seeing the ad in NZ(and digging it!) but because it was so long, it seemed to be only scheduled in late night time slots. One weekend in 1988 I taped a CocoCola music special featuring David Bowie's Glass Spider concert. A wee while ago I watched the video again as I had bought the DVD and wanted to discard the video but thought I would check it out before I did so. There, amongst the crappy Whitney Houston Coke ads, I re-discovered this gem. So glad you like it - RIP Stevie.
