Compared to the standard in other countries, it is modern. But, the 500 series trainsets had been built between 1995 and 1998. And had their daily runs since then. In other words, they are quite worn out. The Nozomi service is the most prestigious service, that Japan Rail has, so to make sure to get the highest reliability, only the latest trainsets are used for this service. The good thing: The tourist JR-RailPass is valid for the Kodama-service.
