This is actually not a Chinese park. It is a Japanese bear park, and there are many of them. They pack 40 or 50 bears into a space appropriate for 2 animals. They are kept in cement pits with no toys, climbing structures, vegetation or anything enriching. They are surrounded by their own feces and urine. People stand above the pit and throw food to or at them, and the bears have learned to beg as a result. It's terribly inhumane and not at all a laughing matter.
Was this at Marine Land in Niagara Falls?? When I was there they had a pit like this for the bears and sold marshmallows for you to feed to them. I don't really know what to think of it because when I went as a kid I thought it was neat to be able to feed them and was amused by them. Later on I felt a bit bad for them to be doing tricks to eat and should they really be eating marshmallows?

I doubt they live in there, they probably move them in only when an exhibition is going on for people. Plus they don't really look that unhappy if you ask me. One of them is back there just chilling out.

This is actually not a Chinese park. It is a Japanese bear park, and there are many of them. They pack 40 or 50 bears into a space appropriate for 2 animals. They are kept in cement pits with no toys, climbing structures, vegetation or anything enriching. They are surrounded by their own feces and urine. People stand above the pit and throw food to or at them, and the bears have learned to beg as a result. It's terribly inhumane and not at all a laughing matter.

Was this at Marine Land in Niagara Falls?? When I was there they had a pit like this for the bears and sold marshmallows for you to feed to them. I don't really know what to think of it because when I went as a kid I thought it was neat to be able to feed them and was amused by them. Later on I felt a bit bad for them to be doing tricks to eat and should they really be eating marshmallows?
