  • Opposition in this position :D

  • @8:15, why not Nd4 winning a pawn or if Bxd4, infiltrating with Kxd4?

  • @andthatsforthewin i think that black can capture with the bishop and then white loses the knight advantage

  • Hi! I appreciate the level of commentary in the video. Can you fix the aspect ratio, though? It's distracting that the squares aren't... square.

  • I have always liked Nigel's playing! Tnx

  • I've watched this video

  • i love chess

  • when will the next endgame vid come =)

  • 9:49

    isn't Be7 better than c4?

i dont see the a winning line for white..

  • great video and great explanation throughout, thanks for your posts!!

  • This one I found much more instructive than the Fisher game & it is definitely an endgame I could have easily butchered.

I also feel the poor old knight gets a rough deal in modern chess with many comments about bishop pairs and long range pieces in end games espec with pawns on both wings.

The knight attacks a5 but then d2 -> e4 and he's attacking on the other wing. It may take a bishop 2 moves to achieve the same & shows if you get your knight on the right "circuit" he can be a big force.

  • Em... these guys are grandmasters... they no what theyre doing a lot more then u guys

  • i really like that game lol very well played out

  • excellent, enjoy all your video's they are enjoyable and instructive please keep them coming

  • Never mind =]]

  • 2:48 Why he didn't play RF2 ??

  • @Omeeeeed because then Kxd3

  • KxR lol

  • absoloutely,, i just find it fascinating all of the variables such as colour square and position of pawns can effect the valubility of the bishop and knight..

  • When the knight checked the black king on h4, the better plan would have been to play Nd4 forcing the trade of minors, or black would lose the c6 pawn immediately. The repositioning of the knight was usless and wasted.

  • Well...Nd4, Bxd4, cxd4, f5+, gxf4, kf6 and black creates a very dangerous outside passed h pawn which allows him to win

Or Nd4, Bxd4, Kxd4, f5, Kxf5 and it comes to the same thing.

Either way Nd4 loses the game as I may well have done myself over the board without careful thought.

Whereas, Short spotted the devastating dominance of the Knight, provided he got it on the right circuit.

That's why this game is so instructive.

  • wow, i looked at the opening and though black would win in bishop vs knight

however i was wrong when nigel played some awesome moves i didnt really think of...man..im too over rated..

  • Oh duh. Hah, thanks.

  • At 2:28, I feel like black capturing on f2 would be a lot more beneficial than rook check, because then you can follow up with rook check and make it unblockable by e1, forcing the king up to h2?

  • clear, concise and enjoyable.

    Good job Jrobi!

  • but rook trade ll be posible and might gain a pawn too?

  • I really enjoyed this, the planning so far ahead and all the build-up was fascinating to review. Couldn't have done it without you, so thank you very much.

  • good job with these vids, i'll subscribe to support a fellow canadian

  • At 9:10, if the Knight played to d4, then the Bishop could capture the Knight and the Pawn on c3 would capture the Bishop. Not bad, but both sides would loose their advantages (white-Knight/black-Bishop), and we would see here a "Pawn War"

  • Nd4 would not be played at 9:10 - it would be an option if the C pawn was able to advance forward first. If the bishop was forced off B6, the pawn on A5 falls, and if the white pawn is taken on C5, then the C6 pawn falls from black. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • the first black move could have been Nd5. if Rxe4 then Nxc3. if white safes the pawn by Ra then Nf4, coz Re can't beat e pawn. if white counter with Ne5 after Nd5 just take the c pawn and trade r gaining one pawn. i am sure there are more things to it, but it looks better than what black played. the idea that i am trying to give is N to be on d3.

  • that knight move also protect the e7 square .

  • No. White could simply play Rd2 and attack the knight. If black takes the pawn with Nc3, he doesn't fork anything, and white takes the rook with an easy check. Essentially, the knight is pinned to the rook if black plays Nd5.

I don't see any advantages, if white plays the right move.

  • yah knight d5 is not good, becoz of Ne5 traps the rook.

  • at 7:34 the knight could have gone to e7, forked king and pawn and taken pawn on c6. what was the reason he didnt take the chance? Did I oversee something?

  • The bishop would take the knight there unfortunately. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • omg what a blunder, you are totally right of course.

anyways thanks a lot for the videos and especially your explanation, and of course your presence at the comments!!!

you should take money for it haha

  • Totally agree 110%!

  • Most of your videos are appreciated! :)

Not a biggie...but is it possible to get a square board?

    Thanks again!

  • Great analysis. Many thanks.

  • Very nice video. Your use of colors to highlight targets and various lines help to make the action of the players quite understandable...felt like I was actually learning something applicable.

  • Thanks!

  • Just curious, which program do you use for making your chess videos because it seems like you are able to do quite a bit of setting up with arrows and boxes and stuff xD

  • Aquarium w/Rybka. I have a vid on it and links on my personal site. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • I know am not the smartest kid on the block but what does the e7 square have to do with the game??? I did not see anything spectacular on the game that was determined by the e7 square.

  • The E7 square would be one of the three squares neccessary for the black king to protect it's pawn in case the bishop was unable to support it. It was also the square the Mr. Short used to double up the black pawns leading to the pawn formation later on in the game that was important in building the winning position. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • i am now following jrobi's videos very avidly.

thanks jrobi. your insights are very helpful.

    keep posting

  • Thanks bhaveshkotaking - I appreciate the feedback!

  • Great Video

  • Thanks MarkL444!

  • Very interesting endgame, and as usual great analysis and commentary. Keep the great vids comin!

  • Thanks Porpholoephais - I enjoyed this endgame.

  • Great video keep em up buddy!

  • Thanks!

  • jrobi... what´s your ELO at the moment ?

  • See answer below and thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Great video :D Good analysis of the game.

  • Thanks RKKAdoro!

  • 6:36

Gee whiz. I never knew that one. :/

  • Knights are quite dynamic. =)

  • excellent job again

  • Thanks for checking it out MD3c0!

  • do one on Veselin Topalov

  • It should be noted that Short's opponent Rustam Kasimdzhanov was the FIDE Champion in 2004.

  • He couldn`t get a stalemate in there?

  • He certainly could have tried, but the chance of a stalemate in such a strong position is practically zero.

  • Do you get paid for this, because it seems like you have done a lot of research. Once again, excellent job!

  • I make the vids for free because I enjoy doing them. The research end of things helps with my chess study. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • whats your ELO?

  • Planning on doing actual over the board tournaments this summer, so I will be posting how that goes. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • JROBI!!!!!!!!!!!

  • excellent! I felt a stronger rush Q-side was called for for White, but then, I'm not invited to grandmaster games so very often.

I love how you have helped me to see that endgame is a thing to go to after the middle game (been playing for so long, but, numbly so) as in a goal.

Ah well....it took me about twenty years to recogniz that the middle game was not the openning....I suppose the dozen years spent misunderstanding this concept is quite short, indeed.

    THANX! You d'MAN, J Robi!

  • Thanks ArtThroughtheAges!

  • interesting analysis this, well done.

  • Thanks cellQ!

  • Great Endgame play!

  • Agreed - I really enjoyed watching this one.

  • how can i get the software u use 4 vids and whereis the list on ur website

  • They are listed on the main page under the resources title. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • this was a nice end game ...keep up the good work hope you make more videos

  • Thanks ynotsayyes!

  • Great endgame by Short. A beautiful example of how powerful a knight can be. Black has so many isolated pawns. It's an impossible task to defend them all.

    Thanks for the video jrobichess.

  • Totally agree Majnu! He really set up a fantastic winning position by combining all the small advantages over the course of play. I am watching him in round 8 now on my blog, and he is in another endgame.

  • Great job on this video. Thanks for the post.

  • Thanks Rollin558!

  • nice vid jrobi - looking forward to more!

  • Thanks for checking it out haydeq!

  • I still enjoy your uploads very much ;)

  • Thanks Hussambani!

  • im a beginner in chess

im good with forks/pins/and discovery attacks

but im really bad in tactical moves and mvoes in the long run

i want to get better but how did you guys learned it? pc software? books?

  • For working on tactics and endgame I have found the best practice to be with a real set. I have some great book resources I have reviewed on my site to help start the process. Lots of great stuff on the net too, but I think the key is working with an actual board regardless of where you get the material from.

  • what are the names of the books, i need some good books to be a grandmaster

  • I could recommend some books if you like. But you say to be a grandmaster. Unless you are as talented as Magnus Carlsen, that may take some time.

  • Does anyone know of a good FREE chess software for newbies? Thx. Great vid btw, showed me just how powerful a knight can be.

  • crafty is good

  • I also have a list if resources on my personal site that should get you a lot of good stuff to get started. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • you were focusing a lot on the pawns, but actually this is more like a typical endgame of the superior minor peice, by making a strong outpost at e4 for the knight. Knights are often superior to bishops in such endgames if you manage to create such outposts. The pawn weaknesses were an added bonus, but that alone would be nothing near enough to win.

  • Thanks for the feedback idlenessss - I agree that the knight was a beautiful piece in this endgame, as I mentioned a few times throughout the vid. All the small advantages combined for a very crushing material advantage. Definitely well played by Short. I am watching his latest game in round 8 right now on my blog.

  • Great job on the video.. Thanks

  • Thanks for checking it out topshonuff!

  • this video is very well done!

  • Thanks LooseStringsRfun!

  • I had a hilarious win the other day, I got a check mate by promoting a pawn for my 2nd queen, winning 47-26...(44-17 if i were to take my oppontents queen just for the fun of it lol)

  • Great demonstration of the options and some alternative lines.

Perhaps you could show the game from it's beginning?

  • Thanks for checking it out marticus! I focused on the endgame on this vid because I wanted as much time on it as possible.

  • I mean later on when you have time ^.^

  • Definitely a possibility!

  • Another great video! I am glad to know that I can come here and enjoy a good video and improve my game. Thank you very much for your time and effort :)

  • Thanks 1kingconan!

  • my endgame suffers brutally. alot of my focus in my 2 1/2years of playing has been on openings, traps and tactical middle-games. if i can't exploit any mistakes before the end game i have a really hard time putting together a decent endgame. your channel has been a huge help to my development as a chess player and I check it everyday for new content.

  • Thanks King - I appreciate the comment. Glad to hear that the vids are helping you out where you need it. Keep me posted on how things go with your game.

  • bueno = good.

  • Thanks. =)

  • gr8 vid it helped alot because im usually bad at endgames

  • Thanks for checking it out MEEP012!

  • That was a good video, really shows the importance of pawn structure in endgames.

  • Yup, pawn structure and a centrilized king (excuse my spelling) are key factors in the endgame.

  • Totally agree, along with the stronger minor piece all these small advantages combined for a very strong winning position. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Jjrobi, you are a god, and have helped me improve my game so well...

    thans:)

  • Thanks canausitalian - definitely not a god but I do enjoy all things chess! =)

Glad to hear that you're games improving! Keep me posted on how things go and thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Haha, well i consider you to be a chess god. You deliver everything in a down to earth way, yet you are very knowlegible about the game. its great:)

  • nice video. I really like these chess videos!

  • Thanks thismakesense!

  • cool vid.. thx
