The beat box i chhese, the workingman's club keyboard sound naff, the bass line simplistic. Apart from the fantastic voice it is hard to say what makes this such a FANTASTIC song. But it is UTTERLY WONDERFUL. I have loved it since the first moment I heard it on a car radio heading south from Clay Cross to Nottingham on a sunny afternoon..... thinking that is a SMASH HIT if ever I heard one. Thanks PHD.
Is he playing chords on the MONOPHONIC Yamaha CS-20m? And wasn't an Eminent organ used for the sound? I guess it doesn't really matter since it isn't plugged in anyway. Neither is the electric piano. Why do they have to patch up the brands on the instruments, anyway?
These semi-live 'performances' are one of the few things I dislike about 80's music. It looks just embarrassing.
@StrangeQuarkStar I'm sorry to say: this is not an eighties thing.. we can see the stones, beatles even jimi hendrix do this.. even the famous bbc program " the grey wistle test" shows us bob marley and the wailers playbacking to catch a fire.. up until the early nineties ( later with Jules).. a live performance on tv was very rare!
yes it is a Yamaha, anyway it is not the synth he used in the song....it's obviously in playback....that riff couldn't be played with a duophonic synth ;-)
6 people let the song down ...

Way to butcher a perfectly good song.

Thank you.

So wonderful! Seems to me to be the only real live-version version here on youtube. All the rest sounds like playback with just different pictures.

Looks like a Yamaha SK30 Organ / String machine.

No, sorry: It is a Yamaha CS-40M duophonic synth. It came with a similar casing to the SK-series.
