And Medicare is actually quite efficient, certainly better than private insurance like BCBS. The GOP "voucher" plan would just mean more people would die from lack of health care. tigerhop is extremely misinformed. By 2030, both the CBO and CBPP estimate, the Republican voucher proposal would cost nearly $9,000 more per beneficiary than Medicare. The great bulk of that—over $8,000—would be shifted to the beneficiary. Those costs would increase because the Republican plan does nothing to contain costs, so as they rise the proposed voucher won’t keep up, and an increasing burden is placed on enrollees.

@howedesign Agreed. And that is presuming there will be anyone to give health care to the already-sick at any cost, voucher or no voucher. My sister is close to renal failure and the ONLY care for the non-rich is Medicare. So take away her Medicare (she's disabled; her only "income" is Social Security) and she just dies. GOP "death squads" for sure. I've known too many people who can't afford health care, can't afford medications, so end up dying. And this is America????

According to the CBO "Long-Term Analysis of a Budget Proposal by Chairman Ryan" (Google it folks and read the entire pdf), Ryan's plan would not only fail to decrease health-care costs per beneficiary, it would increase them by an astonishingly large amount that grows over time. By 2030, health spending on the typical beneficiary would be more than 40 percent higher under the Ryan plan than under existing Medicare, according to the CBO report.

I helped a senior citizen who had been duped by a mortgage broker. He lied to her in the lending transaction. The title agent, under deposition, verified the lie. When I asked the mortgage broker - point blank - if he would want his mother duped and treated in this fashion his response was that his mother was not "in her position". What was this senior citizen's position? She was an "A" borrower with sterling credit who had the misfortune of running into him. We need the CFPB!

I live in the U.S., which is based on the constitution, which states the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. It does not extend that right further to include a "right" to health care." Obamacare will lead to rationing. PR's plan allows seniors to pick from plans that congress enjoys, and rich won't get subsidies, but poor will. The most vulnerable seniors get help.

@tigerhop The asian tigers don't include China. They're Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan. They have some of the lowest tax rates in the world (Hong Kong has the absolute lowest tax in the world), yet still implement universal health care. Obamacare isn't anywhere near what actual single payer health care would be. PR's plan means seniors get vouchers for health care plans, but there's no way a health care company is going to insure them at the voucher value, it'd be bad business.
