  • his association with elvis is not a strong one and to be honest he has stretched the truth ..there are no photos of him and elvis together, if he spent as much time with elvis as he makes out to have done then surely at some point a photo would have been taken.

  • True he is stretching some stories but he did do a few demo's for Elvis and sounded just as good.

  • Proby was good looking and sexy but Elvis was sooooo....pretty.

  • i dont bother to read all the experts comments on stars but hey....this guys still alive and kicking, maybe he learnt how to take drugs in small quantities lmfao. Odd how all the famous ones die and its drug related. crack on PJ, your voice was miles better than....shit forgot his name.

  • P.J. has had a mainly wonderful life!!! Many ups & a few downs!! Why his book can't find a publisher I'll never know. Some people have suggested making a musical of his life story.....that would be fantastic ! What a singer....what a character!!

  • I too know PJP having worked with him for many months on the 'THANKS' CD Album and he tells tall tales about his supposed friendship with Elvis that simply do not make sense. When PJP was age 14 Elvis was 17 and doing shows, he was not dating Proby's sister in Houston as Elvis lived in Memphis some 500 miles away. According to PJP he was in boarding at a Military School where he played a little drum in the marching band. The Elvis story was started by Jack Good in 1964 to promote PJ in the UK.

  • I could buy part of this if Proby was from Tupelo or anywhere inside a 100 mile radius of Memphis. Elvis wasn't near Houston until late 1954 and Proby would have been 16 if he was born in 1938. Maybe his sister went out with Elvis once but the names of Elvis' real girlfriends back then are known and she wasn't one of them. Elvis didn't meet Col. Parker till 1955. Nothing about this adds up and Proby's suggestion that the only difference between him and Elvis was circumstances doesn't fly.

  • I don't think he was putting elvis down at all - and it was interesting too!!!!!

  • Yawn!!! What a boring interview!!!

  • I Know Jim Proby grew up and lived in Texas, and Elvis grew up and lived in Memphis so how did he know him(as friends) from the age of 14 yrs old... not related and never mentioned in any books as family friends .I suspect Jim may not be telling the truth.I do know that Jim did sing some demo tunes for Elvis to listen to but I think thats it.

  • This guy is jealous of Elvis. Talk about begrudging. Elvis was a lucky poser? I don't think so.

  • Peculiar man to interview for a TV segment on remembering Elvis. You'd think they'd pick somebody who could give Elvis some credit for being a ground breaker. This Proby guy is telling them he, Tommy Sands and Elvis were all doing the same thing but Elvis got lucky and hooked up with Tom Parker. He was just a product and not anything special. Is British GMTV a big deal or a rinkydink operation run by beginners?

  • @JudicialError I don't watch GMTV...try my best to avoid it to be honest...it's not all that!!

  • nawlins4evah,

I believe Proby had a lapse of memory in the Skues interview. I found that in 1953 Johnny Horton (not Rivers) married Hank Williams' second wife Billie Jean Jones (not Williams' first wife Audrey, the mother of Hank Jr.). Together they had two daughters, but no sons. The time window of Proby's story had to be between September and October of 1960. Prior to that time Elvis lived in hotels (not a house) when in California, and Johnny Horton died in Texas on the 5th of November.

  • castleontheriver,

It does make sense that PJ misspoke about Johnny Rivers and I suppose he could have been mistaken about Billie Jean too. Though it doesn't explain him saying he was babysitting Hank Jr. Anybody who knew Audrey Williams knows full well she wouldn't have let 11 year old Hank Jr. stay at Billie Jean's let alone 2000 miles away!

  • castleontheriver,

I don't know whether she is an insider but IMO she does PJ a disservice by uploading tracks from an inferior album, presenting them as if they are on a par with his 60's records and then deleting polite but honest comments to the contrary. For example fans have known for years that PJ despised the I'm Yours album. I listen to it occasionally but if my first exposure to PJ was a track from that album, I wouldn't look for more.

  • inc2468,

She only allows comments that rave about her videos. What's to rave about? She squashes people till they look like Barney Rubble and then breaks the pictures into little pieces. Big whoop. Everybody knows she has somebody rate them awesome as soon as they go up and then she immediately disables ratings so 5 stars will appear in searches. Who does she think she's fooling?

  • I wonder if I'm the only fan who thinks a caption on a video upload which says "for the real Proby fans left out there" makes it appear that his fans are leaving him in droves. Perhaps some people want to think they're part of an exclusive little group even if it's at the expense of their idol's image.

  • inc2468, you aren't the only one. That caption shows the attitude of some Proby insiders - or wannabe insiders. Youtube is a handy place for them to tell everyone that REAL Proby fans may only express wholehearted approval of every note he's ever sung and every word he's ever said. A self-defeating attitude in my opinion but they don't care what I think. They must assume that you and I are the exception. Everyone else agrees with them and of course attends all his shows :-)

  • Has anyone heard whether PJ performed at the annual Elvis birthday party in Austin Texas on Friday night? There are two videos on youtube of PJ singing with the Ted Roddy band in Austin a couple of years ago. It would be great to see some footage of this year's celebration.

  • inc2468,

If Proby had been invited to perform at the Elvis birthday show in Austin I'm sure it would have been announced on the official PJ Proby forum. If you don't know how to find that forum try google...I can't post a link here on youtube. His staff posted an announcement last year on another Proby forum that "As soon as there is any news we'll publish it on the Official Forum". So we can assume that they are not going to bother with questions asked on youtube.

  • Regarding the debate as to how well (if at all) PJ knew Elvis: Someone needs to ask Dottie (Dorothy) Harmony.... She's the Elvis girlfriend who features in the early home movies, and gets a name check on a 60's PJ track. (Fans will know what I'm referring to).

  • I am in touch with Dotty now & again although I've never met her personally.I know someone who visits her every year in Malibu. Rest assured every Proby/ Dotty /Elvis story is true. Read her tribute to P.J in his birthday book released in 2008. Ron

  • MusicDude86, he said it!

Nawlins4evah, he evidently doesn't realise making a point at the expense of innocent bystanders earns him no kudos. His stories of ties to the rich and famous have lots of inaccuracies but he seems indifferent towards an audience who could react to them unfavourably. And he is clearly unaware that when ANY grown man publicly blames the women in his life (particularly his mother) for his own shortcomings and character flaws he is usually perceived as weak and immature.

  • oldtowntonight,This man can lie for fun,he never met elvis,or sang for him........

  • itsthetruthhok Prove it otherwise!

  • Can anybody explain the strange story PJ told (in the Keith Skues 2008 interview) about babysitting with Hank Williams Jr. for his parents Audrey and her husband Johnny Rivers? I was in contact with Audrey Williams after Hank Sr. died until her death and she never remarried. She and her kids didn't live in California either. I bet Johnny Rivers would be surprised to learn he was married to her!

  • After listening to those Keith Skues interviews, I bet Scotty Moore would be surprised as well to hear that Elvis was in the Houston area in 1953 and 1954 "going with" PJ's sister and driving a pink Cadillac. Elvis Presley's comings and goings have been documented ad nauseam and for every Cadillac he ever owned as well.

  • Scotty Moore would also be surprised to learn that he and the rest of the folks in Memphis had a lot to learn about tablecloths from their betters in Houston. If PJ thinks telling a story like that makes him look good he ought to think again.

  • come on now.....Proby didn't say that....did he? unless he has dementia....

  • who cares if he knew Elvis or not

  • There used to be occasional footage on youtube that was taken by fans at PJ's shows but I don't believe I've seen anything at all since a show in June 2008, other than a little bit of his 70th birthday party. Isn't it allowed anymore? This fan in Canada would like to see some videos of his recent shows since I can't be there!

  • memphisnancy,

You are on his case? You make it sound like a vendetta! Please explain.

What other "tall tales" are you referring to?

  • PJ Proby was doing club dates in Los Angeles in 1965? That's definitely news to some of us.

  • memphisnancy,

Friend or not, if Jerry Schilling called PJ a "polished professional" in his book, does he now say that he was a "nobody"?

  • inc2468,no jerry did not say he was a nobody,i said it,pj was not a friend of elvis,so why does he say he is.I have been on this mans case for a few weeks now,and this man tells some tall tales........

  • spoke to Jerry Schilling, elvis was never a friend of pj,elvis only saw him once,so did Jerry,he is a nobody................

  • elvis was a friend of P.j

  • + he did singing for elvis to see if the song sounded good to release so he met him more than once

i may just be 14 but i have met PJ proby and i kow a bit about him

  • No one is calling Jerry Schilling a liar, Ron. The episode in Jerry's book about PJ was to emphasise that Elvis was still considered a big star in 1965 and PJ, who Jerry called a "polished professional", was obviously moved when Elvis asked him to sing Somewhere again. Nice story but how does this end the debate over whether PJ and Elvis knew each other personally?

  • This story does not end or even help the debate as to whether P.J. & Elvis knew each other; But there are lots of other stories that do!

The earliest one being that Elvis dated P.J.'s step sister Betty before he got really famous. Ron

  • Point taken, Ron. The story about P.J. in Jerry Schilling's book describes an incident in 1965 when P.J. was performing at the Red Velvet night club in Hollywood. Elvis and his entourage were there and Elvis requested that P.J. sing Somewhere again. It's a cool story!

  • rontenn, although Ruth Batchelor's face may be slightly nearer the camera than his, the difference isn't enough to account for how much smaller his head looks. His face is in front of her hair, while his chest is behind her shoulder. An unnatural pose.

Photographs have been 'fiddled with' since the beginning of photography. Alteration of publicity shots was certainly being done as early as the fifties and sixties.

You brought up this subject, so I have pointed out a likely example.

  • rontenn, my apologies if you are the photographer and know that the picture has not been altered from the original shot you took 40-50 years ago. P. J. Proby must have an unusually small head. Even after allowances for his height and the camera angle, his head is at least 5% smaller than it should be to look 'normal' next to Ruth Batchelor's in that picture.

  • castleon the river, I am a good friend of P.J. & he gave me the pic with Ruth Batchelor.I am not the guy who took that pic in 1962 although I have photographed P.J. many times. If you look closely you can see Ruth is slightly nearer the camera than P.J. plus she has a broad kind of face & big hair so I can see where you are coming from. P.J. has the reputation of being a "big head" but in reality his head is quite normal! Ron Ron

  • Anyone could fiddle a pic these days? Certainly. For instance that funny picture of P. J. Proby and Ruth Batchelor on his web site. Or does he have an especially small head?

  • castle on the river That pic is genuine!! When there is a pic people say it's a phoney & when there isn't one they say Proby is lying..the guy just can't win!!,

     Ron

  • memphisnancy,

Can you ask Red West if he knew Jim (or Jimmy) Smith or Jett Powers? Those were the names P.J. used when he first went to Hollywood.

In recent interviews promoting his new CD of old western songs, P.J. has said he played rhythm guitar behind Roy Rogers. Has anyone ever seen a picture of them together or read anything else about this? I don't know when or where it was supposed to have happened.

  • Red West! Oh yeah! I remember him..the guy who betrayed Elvis & beat up countless fans.....a real gent! Ron

  • Beg your pardon, Ron, but since P.J. said in an interview lately that he knew Red West, I was simply offering the suggestion that Red might remember him by one of his other names. For heavens sake, get a grip, man!

  • PJ Proby's demos for Elvis are a matter of record. They exist. But Elvis wasn't in Texas until PJ was 15 or 16, not 14. It was late summer of 1954 at the earliest. See Elvis' biography. It's 575 miles/925 km from Memphis to Houston on today's highways.

Speaking of friends, I'd sure like to see a picture of PJ Proby with Timi Yuro, Glen Campbell, Eddie Cochran, or Leon Russell. He says they were all great friends of his when he was in California.

  • grizzlygalore this man tells lies, try and find a picture of pj and elvis,or Eddie Cochran, you cant,i have been looking for weeks now,so mr pj dream on..........

  • Pictures,pictures!!!......I've met the Queen but I don't have a picture to prove it!!! A picture doesn't necessary mean a thing 'cos anyone could fiddle a pic these days anyway with modern computer technology!!! No photo does not mean P.J. is lying,it just means no-one was around with a camera way back then!!!! SO WHAT! Ron

  • grizzlygalore, I have a photo of Jim Smith with Leon Russell onstage taken about 1959. Ron

  • You have a photo of Jim Smith and Leon Russell? Where can I view it? There may be pictures of PJ Proby (Jim Smith) with the performers and writers he frequently talks about, but being told that pictures exist isn't the same as seeing them.

  • Hi grizzlygalore, Sorry! I looked in my archives & I spoke too soon. The pic is not of Leon but of Marshall Leib & Steve Venay with Jett Powers onstage at some Hollywood club in March 1961; sorry for being too hasty!! Ron

  • I know friends, and people who worked for elvis, and no one i have met knows this man,In fact i asked red west about two months ago,he was there from the start,he said he has never met the guy,so this man is a phoney...............

  • you clearly have no idea who PJ Proby is, or what his background is.

he demo-ed many songs for Elvis--whether he 'knew him as a friend"--who knows? who cares? the fact is he was there.

  • I do know who pj proby is,i cant find any true facts that this man comes out with.Red west is a good friend of mine,he has never met the man, never seen him,so mr pj is talking out of his ass, show me a photo of proby and elvis together, you cant can you?............

  • Well, PJ Proby is not what he called himself at the time when he worked for Elvis. If Red West never heard of a PJ Proby at that time, it can be as simple as it didn't exist someone who called himself PJ Proby then. He simply called himself Jimmy Smith, and God knows how easy it is to remember a certain Jimmy Smith after 50 years...

That he did demo-discs for Elvis is just a fact.

  • p.j. i love you - yesterday today and tomorrow

greetings to all fans especially sherilyn1977

  • I love to hear P.J. talking & of course singing..what a character!! Ron

  • Even though the show appears to be about Elvis, it's sad that the interviewers seem to have so little interest in PJ who was a star in his own right. Just typical of so many of his radio and TV interviews. Do all these interviewers believe that UK audiences are only interested in Elvis, split trousers and sordid gossip?

  • Wonderful to see PJ talking about Elvis.

  • What a treat to see PJ talking ,thank you

  • Great interview clip,

PJ PROBY himself should be as BIG and respected himself as Elvis.

He's been robbed of so much global fame its untrue,

CHECK OUT PJ SINGING LOVE ME TENDER which is also posted on this channel, Fantasic version which is just as good as the Elvis version.

  • brilliant interview, thanks Dave
