Its sad that Glenn opens his segment referencing the importance of 'context' and then proceeds to take pieces of HR3200 grossly out of context in an attempt to support his awkward proposal that HR3200 is somehow related to reparations.
Glenn misconstrues the page 881 reference in the following ways:
First of all, in his list he completely leaves out the first preference in that section which is to prefer institutions with a record of “Training the greatest percentage, or significantly improving the percentage, of health care professionals who provide primary care.”
Secondly, he pretends that his reference refers to any grant a medical school can receive from the government. There are in fact many grants in the Bill, all with varying goals and requirements. This one happens to be on primary care, thus the preference noted above. Most grant requirements do not even mention minorities, so he can hardly say that preference will be given to the most diverse institution over the most qualified one.
Fourthly, and related to the absurdity of Glenn’s overall argument is that ‘health disparities’ have nothing to do with reparations. A health disparity is a medical and public health concept that certain health outcomes impact certain groups disproportionately and it is important to find out why and how to fix it. This does not necessarily include Black people. It can be as simple as old people being more likely to get Alzheimer's disease.
Health disparities are also not about “righting the wrongs of the past.” They are about righting the ‘wrongs’ of the present (technically they don’t even go that far, because there is not a value aspect). Point is, despite Glenn’s deceitful distortions and weak attempt at making the argument, HR3200 was certainly not made to address reparations.
I’m not sure why anybody would continue taking Glenn seriously after seeing how much of what he says is insidiously taken out of context.

The reforms I would consider would be more along the lines of, if someone has drunk so much in a night that they need their stomach pumped you should fine them 10% of the cost. It'll reduce costs and their ability to get drunk as often.

You may not have heard of this concept before, its called tax. No government can exist without it. From It is stealing I can conclude you must be an anarchist. The idea of taxing those who can afford to pay only makes sense. If someone is paid 500k a year and is taxed even 60%, they still receive 200k someone who earns 50k a year taxed as low as 10% only receives 45k
Well I don't come from a well off family. Of my 5 siblings or my mothers side of 11 aunts and uncles and almost 60+ 1st cousins I cant think of maybe but two who have ever lived above the poverty line. But I do not want my government to steal for me. If everyone regardless of income paid 10% that would be fair but what you are describing is a progressive tax which is stealing for the purposes of redistributing income under the guise of charity. But charity isnt forced its done personally.
Taxes must only be for things that benefit us all equally without regard to class, race, religeon, or connections. You may not covet the money for yourself then you are actually worse. If you feel such a need to help others you absolutely should. I give some 15% or more of my income to help the needy and the poor directly above and beyond what taxes forcibly confiscate from me. That kind of giving actually helps people and does not shore up corrupt power for fat cat politicians.

Its sad that Glenn opens his segment referencing the importance of 'context' and then proceeds to take pieces of HR3200 grossly out of context in an attempt to support his awkward proposal that HR3200 is somehow related to reparations.
Glenn misconstrues the page 881 reference in the following ways:

Secondly, he pretends that his reference refers to any grant a medical school can receive from the government. There are in fact many grants in the Bill, all with varying goals and requirements. This one happens to be on primary care, thus the preference noted above. Most grant requirements do not even mention minorities, so he can hardly say that preference will be given to the most diverse institution over the most qualified one.

This does not necessarily include Black people. It can be as simple as old people being more likely to get Alzheimer's disease.

Health disparities are also not about “righting the wrongs of the past.” They are about righting the ‘wrongs’ of the present (technically they don’t even go that far, because there is not a value aspect). Point is, despite Glenn’s deceitful distortions and weak attempt at making the argument, HR3200 was certainly not made to address reparations.
I’m not sure why anybody would continue taking Glenn seriously after seeing how much of what he says is insidiously taken out of context.

@AvaPozen Yeah, I've had family in the NHS too. It may be a bit slow at times but it gets the job done and you don't get a heart attack from a $15,000 charge. The reforms I would consider would be more along the lines of, if someone has drunk so much in a night that they need their stomach pumped you should fine them 10% of the cost. It'll reduce costs and their ability to get drunk as often.

No matter how badly you want to justify it to yourself, no matter how worthy you think the cause is.... By giving any gov this kind of power to take by threat of violence from one to give to their voter base you are creating a gov that can and will eventually take everything YOU HAVE as well.

You may not have heard of this concept before, its called tax. No government can exist without it. From It is stealing I can conclude you must be an anarchist. The idea of taxing those who can afford to pay only makes sense. If someone is paid 500k a year and is taxed even 60%, they still receive 200k someone who earns 50k a year taxed as low as 10% only receives 45k

Well I don't come from a well off family. Of my 5 siblings or my mothers side of 11 aunts and uncles and almost 60+ 1st cousins I cant think of maybe but two who have ever lived above the poverty line. But I do not want my government to steal for me. If everyone regardless of income paid 10% that would be fair but what you are describing is a progressive tax which is stealing for the purposes of redistributing income under the guise of charity. But charity isnt forced its done personally.

Taxes must only be for things that benefit us all equally without regard to class, race, religeon, or connections. You may not covet the money for yourself then you are actually worse. If you feel such a need to help others you absolutely should. I give some 15% or more of my income to help the needy and the poor directly above and beyond what taxes forcibly confiscate from me. That kind of giving actually helps people and does not shore up corrupt power for fat cat politicians.
